Daddy Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Really enjoyed Joan Is Awful! It was truly funny at parts and I didn't see the twist coming. What brings me to Loch Henry. I had a great time with it. Great pacing and story. BUT I called the entire twist 20 minutes in. Excited to dive into Beyond The Sea!
Benjamin Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 I really enjoyed this Season. Mazey Day was by far the weakest, but I wasn't bored at any point. It seemed a lot funnier than I remember Black Mirror being too? Though it has been a long time since I've watched the previous stuff so maybe I've forgotten the jokes. (Obviously not a comedy show, but I laughed with the show a lot) Joan Is Awful is definitely joining my list of first episodes to recommend to people -- I really don't like telling people to start with S1E1 I actually enjoyed the move away from "phones bad" to the black mirror reflecting society a little more generally this time. After a couple episodes I no longer spent half my time watching trying to figure out whose phone was going to kill them in what way and just enjoyed the commentary.
Dylangaga Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Loch Henry > Beyond The Sea > Joan Is Awful > Mazey Day >>>> Demon 79
EriKills Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Episode 1 - Joan Is Awful It was cute. There were a bit too many plot holes though like Spoiler uhm couldn't Joan just....get rid of her phone? that would stop Streamberry from being able to record her. The "ALWAYS read your terms and conditions!!!" commentary....wow how mind blowing we've never heard that take before. Also whenever she had a meltdown in the lawyer office GIRL you're lichrally giving them ratings, same as the church scene. She could spend the entire week on her couch watching tv all day, that would make for boring tv and her show would be cancelled with a SWIFTNESS... I really enjoyed the ending though, and Selma was so good Episode 2 - Loch Henry Godawful episode. SO much filler, did we really need a 10 minute sequence of them just editing the documentary also SO much LAZY writing Spoiler the mom just having her torture porn videos out in the open like that, them taking the videos without her permission of COURSE they were going to find something on the tape. the girlfriend slipping on a rock in the river and dying LAZY writing just to get their point across that the boyfriend lost EVERYTHING in pursuit of what he wants the most!! :( which is also SUCH a tired ass trope. also the whole "true crime is so exploitive of it's subjects" commentary PEAKED with the Jeffrey Dahmer docuseries nothing original about this turrible episode. Episode 3 - Beyond The Sea FINALLY a "classic" feeling Black Mirror episode I thought the episode was really great and such an improvement from the first two episodes. Probs my fave episode of the season. Spoiler the red herring when Cliff is inspecting the outside of the ship and you think David is going to leave him out there or something whew, I really did not see the actual outcome coming. Episode 4 - Mazey Day Oh yeah this was bad the episode was nothing but filler? Spoiler like they really could have cut this to a 10 minute episode. Paparazzi girl stalks troubled celebrity to secret rehab facility. Other paps show up. Werewolf transformation, everyone but pap girl dies. Pap girl kills werewolf and gets her photo. End. They truly didn't need the first 30 minutes Episode 5 - Demon 79 Probably my second favorite episode of the season. The main character was so likeable, her + the demon, a COUPLE there could be an entire series of them! The ending was a bit boring though, it was fine I guess. Spoiler I'm glad they didn't cop out and say she was just hallucinating/it was mental illness the entire time. I would have liked a bit more backstory of the demons, what was the purpose of the 3 sacrifices etc....it ended so abruptly. Final Thoughts: Umm the season overall was NOT it , these episodes probably has the laziest writing yet. It doesn't help that this is the comeback season after a 4 year hiatus....so expectations were just too high welp. I hope next season they stop with the meta commentary (Streamberry is CRINGE) and go back to "technology in the distant future that seem great in theory but actually go horribly wrong". Episode 3 was the best one by far, episodes 2 and 4 being the WORST.
Bimbo Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Just watched Ep 1... it was cute but there was a point where Salma's shtick accent and the writing just turned it into a bad comedy ngl 1
abelfenty Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 (edited) Loch Henry > Demon 79 > Joan Is Awful > Beyond The Sea > Mazey Day Loch Henry and Demon 79 were the only episodes I really liked. The rest range from mid to god-awful. Mazey Day is the worst episode of the entire show. I never thought anything could be worse than the Ashley O episode. Overall it’s an improvement from the painfully mediocre S5, but it’s still a long way off the quality of the older seasons. Edited June 18, 2023 by abelfenty
Pelvic Thrust Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Mazey Day was so bad that it made me like it lol

sk8erfan Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 They didn’t have to cosplay Claire Saffitz like that in Joan is Awful
Daddy Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Beyond The Sea was so so good! The ending gagged me. But so far Demon is my fave. It had me question so many things up until the end. Fabulous. Only Mazey Day left. Hope it's not as supbar as everyone says but I'm sure I will at least enjoy it.
Daddy Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 Mazey Day was WILD! Really entertaining and kinda camp. There were no duds in this season but I usually find something worthwhile in a BM episode. 1
Komet Posted June 18, 2023 Posted June 18, 2023 (edited) Tbh I'm kinda disappointed with the season. Overall the quality isn't bad, but majority of the episodes didn't feel like BM. Like for starters only JIA was set in some sort of near future, all the others were either present or past. Which on it's own wouldn't be bad, but only Beyond The Sea relied on some sort of tech as a major plot point, so all together it's just underwhelming. Ranking: Beyond The Sea - Kinda too long, but the only ep that brought back that 'using tech goes bad and humans suffer' vibes Joan Is Awful - Campy and unserious, but it was entertaining once Salma appeared; good commentary on AI-related issues imo. Lowkey too light for BM tho Loch Henry - This was a bore until the last third, and then it just turned into some generic crime story. I guess-video taping counts as tech? And it's about the exploitations of crimes for entertainment? Mazey Day - I ~loved~ the mid-2000s LA setting about paparazzi and how messed up they are, but once THAT happens it ruins the whole thing. Like really?? Demon 79 - Cmon this had nothing to with Black Mirror, NOTHING I mean it's a fine story, and in vacuum I liked it a bit more than MD, but at least there you had paparazzi as some sort of social commentary, this is what exactly? So overall not unwatchable, but pretty mediocre and BM-unlike Edited June 18, 2023 by Komet blu
Rep2000 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Black Mirror at its core is a social commentary with a dash of technology in it. Like, the first ep is about forcing a prime minister to f a pig and distracting the whole nation while the captive got released to empty streets. Because despite how 'awful' it is, people just can't stop watching it while missing the more important thing. This same motif got repeated again and again throughout the whole series with 50 Mil Merits. And Loch Henry to a degree. Brooker kinda predict the rise of ragebait content since 2011 and shade the exploitative nature of talent shows, true crime doc and news channel now.
Twilish Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Only have watched beyond the sea so far. I think it was a good episode overall and i agree it has the old black mirror feel but i was just hoping they’d surprise me a little more with the ending as i saw it coming halfway through the episode. Guess their wasn’t much they could do ending wise with that premise though.
fountain Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Demon 79- this was so long and boring and I got absolutely nothing out of the episode it could’ve been interesting and I liked some of the themes and ideas presented but it went nowhere and was just ultimately pointless Overall this season had its hits and misses, but I’d say it feels like a step up from Season 5 since it seems there was more effort put into it, though not a return to the form of its peak. The thing is, even the worst Black Mirror episodes are still better than a lot of what else is out there, so it’s whatever. However if episodes like Mazey Day and Demon 79 are indications of where they want to move forward then I am worried Joan is Awful (so fun) > Beyond the Sea (classic Black Mirror) > Loch Henry (fine but predictable) > Mazey Day (short and ridiculous) > Demon 79 (long and boring) Maybe season 7 could use the help of co-writers because the writing did seem to be the weakest aspect overall, I don’t think any of the episodes were as sophisticated as they could have been unfortunately.
illia Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 (edited) FInally almost caught up, just finished S5 Black Mirror as a whole is such a hit or miss for me lol, I either adore the episode or I hate it My faves so far are Shut Up and Dance, White Bear, White Christmas, Nosedive, San Junipero, Hang the DJ and Bandersnatch The worst ones are definitely The Waldo Moment (boring mid), USS Callister (overrated mid), Metalhead (probably the worst one so far... just a waste of time) Edited June 19, 2023 by Flomik
barbiegrande Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 (edited) Charlie Brooker has lost it, unfortunately. The fact that only two episodes this season deal with technology Mazey Day was the jumping of the shark. What in the C grade AHS stories was that?? Joan is Awful and Beyond the Sea felt like the only true BM episodes Edited June 19, 2023 by barbiegrande
barbiegrande Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Daniel Porter can demolish me, he looked so good with that beard and beefiness
youresotoxic Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 This season was bad, but not as bad as season 5 so i'll give it that... but I enjoyed the episodes EXCEPT Mazey Day. now that was horrible. Joan is Awful and Loch Henry were my faves. a disappointing season especially after 4 years(?)
worldwide angel Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 i watched the season earlier this weekend and it was hmmm. the highs were highs but the low was so low.... joan is awful was fine. i initially agreed that Spoiler she should have just threw the phone away but at the same time i kind of like how the critique is placed on the corporation and not just blaming joan for being "phone-addicted" or whatever criticism people have of today's generation and their relationship with tech loch henry Spoiler my second favorite episode. i love my'hala so no figure but i did not expect that twist i though ian adair would be alive or something. i also think it was subtle but worthy commentary that pia was so excited to exploit the deaths of the townsfolk just to die and end up being exploited by the same machine she attached herself too beyond the sea Spoiler it really gave behind her eyes teas until the very end so the twist gagged me i think it was a bit too long but this is objectively (as objective as you can get) the best episode of the season mazey day: demon 79: Spoiler my faveeeeee. i love nida and gaap. i hated that she didn't and that gaap tried to convince her not to kill michael but at least the world imploded before he ravaged the earth. #LetFascistsDieGruesomely! the commentary regarding racism in england was a great touch

Badgalbriel Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 I feel like Black Mirror has run its course. This season was very mid and they will ruin their legacy if they continue with it. 1
Mr. Peanutbutter Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Only the final episode left and this is probably my least favorite season of the show. Joan is Awful Interesting idea but I thought they overdid the humor. Felt so out of place. I guess I'm just used to this show being dark and depressing. Loch Henry Best episode of the season hands down. I was shocked by the twist and it felt like a true Black Mirror episode. Beyonde the Sea Great production but I saw the twist coming just like everybody else did. Mazey Day Probably the worst episode of the entire show. I just cannot understand why they decided to go to the supernatural route. Was it to make it seem like even in a werewolf massacre context people would still want to take pictures to sell it? Idk it was just bad.
