Uncatena Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 if the entire rest of the season sucks, it was worth it for Joan is Awful. a PERFECT episode.
FOCK Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 (edited) First ep was awful as a Black Mirror ep, but decent for a comedy. The entire thing is literally a rip of a TikTok. It’s alright, but I don’t really want “comedy” from BM. It felt like a parody. I’ve just wrapped the second, & I liked it. Nothing groundbreaking. Ryan Murphy definitely catching strays with that one. The 2 eps being SO “meta” back to back though… I don’t know how to feel about it. In one sense, I appreciate that they’re trying to tie into current events & trends, on the other, it’s starting to feel too gimicky & on the nose. Moving on to the third ep now, I hope it doesn’t continue this trend. Edited June 15, 2023 by FOCK
pxxxtrick Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 S6 is making absolutely no noise which is so sad to see. regardless I’ll be streaming this weekend.
flower moon Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Watching the first ep rn and the acting is truly horrendous

FOCK Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 (edited) Beyond The Sea > Loch Henry > Demon79 > Joan is Awful > Mazey Day. Overall? I don’t think any lived up to the hype of the extended wait, nor the brilliance of earlier seasons + wish it included more tech. Edited June 15, 2023 by FOCK
RideOrDie Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 didnt like joan is awful, what a bunch of nothing burger. i did laugh at some points though, felt like a cute comedy thing. and that twist has been done so many times and in a much better way i hope the rest of the season is better
Chromatica Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Watched Demon79 and Mazey Day so far: now what the hell do demons and werewolves have to do with BM? Where is the tech stuff?
Cefh Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 (edited) "Joan Is Awful" 6/10 for me.... Somehow I had the same feeling I had when I watched "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too": great idea, poor execution. It started really well but then it felt like some random comedy show. It was bad? No, but it doesn't look like a typical Black Mirror episode, more like the fourth episode of S5. It's in my bottom 5 out of all BM episodes, but yeah, it worth the watch (imo all BM episodes are at least okay so I wouldn't mind watch it again later) IMDB so far Joan Is Awful: 8.2 Loch Henry: 8.1 Beyond The Sea: 8.4 Mazey Day: 6.7 Demon 79: 8.5 Edited June 15, 2023 by Cefh
Khal Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Can't wait to watch later. Hopefully, they redeem themselves and go back to S1-3 quality.
DoctorIce Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 (edited) Why didn't Joan just... ...get rid of her phone after it was established that it was recording her life for the show? Seems like an obvious plot hole. Other than that it was a fun 'light' episode. Edited June 15, 2023 by DoctorIce
Hobbes Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Watched Joan is Awful first and just finished Demon79. Spoilers ahead! Joan is Awful I liked the lighthearted tone - reminded me of Nosedive in terms of relatively low stakes and more social disgrace-oriented themes than complete bleak dystopia. Also didn't see the plot twist coming although I'm probably in the minority there, ha. The meta stuff worked well too IMO, with Joan (played by Annie) being shown the real Annie Murphy, and also Annie Murphy playing herself at the end. It would have been nice to see Cate Blanchett again. Demon79 Really interestingly shot - I loved the fantasy scenes and the overall cinematography. The colour grading was lovely too. Nice to see BM address racial tensions in England in the 70s, very relatable. And I really thought she'd succeed in completing the three sacrifices but end up in prison or something. Again, fairly lighthearted tone with a surprising amount of humour. Felt more like a Doctor Who episode in a weird way. And not tech-based. I guess they're pushing the envelope? Also I think there were hints about previous sacrifices when she's in the basement and finds the talisman but I feel like they could've called back to it maybe. Reminded me of Stephen King's IT with the clown resurfacing every 27(?) years and the kid finding articles in the library. About to watch Beyond The Sea!
KanMap Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 I liked Joan Is Awful and Demon 79. Beyond The Sea: great cast but didn’t click with me. Loch Henry & Mazey Day: were ok.
fountain Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Really enjoyed Joan is Awful! Good start to the season
Hobbes Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Just finished Beyond The Sea: The Black Mirror we know and love. Had a feeling where it was headed the moment he offered the link up to David but it was still uncomfortable and painful to watch it unfold. Nicely done. I'm not sure it needed to be set in an alternate 60s world though? Would have worked just fine in a near-future setting. But that's my only gripe. Dark, satisfying and a sour ending. It almost played like a Shakespearean tragedy like R+J in that you almost know what's coming but you still stick around.
Dear Reader Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 I enjoyed Joan is Awful, but Loch Henry absolutely GAGGED me, I loved it!! Enjoying this season so far
Hobbes Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Loch Henry: Again, the Black Mirror we know and love. Bleak, plot twist, horrifying. Loved it. Not hugely tech-heavy, similarly to Demon79 but that's okay. The footage of the mum entering the room in that mask with the drill was chilling. Her Scottish accent was terrible though. She sounded German at times. Liked the dichotomy at the end as well with the film being a success but he's lost his mother, girlfriend, and has to live with the knowledge of the truth, too. Bittersweet, just how we like it! Exceeded my expectations - it felt like Crocodile meets White Bear, IMO. Mazey Day: Mixed feelings on this one. Like a previous user said - werewolves? I'm not sure about it. I'm not sure the plots based on celebrity life like this one and the Ashley episode from S05 are particularly relatable or relevant to the rest of us. I don't know, maybe Britney Spears could relate to this episode, lycanthropy aside. I feel like the 'paparazzi are bad' narrative has been done to death. Also the shortest of the season, it felt a bit rushed. There was maybe ten minutes between them finding Mazey and the ending scene. Easily my least favourite from this season. Overall thoughts on S06: I liked that they decided to push the boundaries of what Black Mirror looks like (except for the werewolf plot), mainly in its stylistic choices and varying tones. Each episode had its own emotional identity and made me feel a different way which was nice. Also a much-needed break from the overdone virtual reality plots which were cute at first (San Junipero, White Christmas, USS Callister) but got tired real quick (Striking Vipers). This season wasn't very focused on technology and looking at the near-future which was interesting, and paid off most of the time, but not always. I think the best episodes were Beyond The Sea and Loch Henry, though I expect I'll go back to Joan is Awful more often as it's more lighthearted. Demon79 was cute but I don't know that it's got great re-watch value. Mazey Day is a skip.
mokitsu Posted June 15, 2023 Posted June 15, 2023 Mazey Day has to be the worst BM episode ever released. WTF did I just watch I've seen Joan is Awful, which was good, and Loch Henry, which was amazing.
Peroxide Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Beyond The Sea… Christ. Spoiler This seasons equivalent to Shut Up and Dance / Crocodile… such a gut-punch of an ending… I expected him to kill Cliff and then pose as his replica… the ending we actually got was so much sadder. That being said… nothing here comes close to the magic of early Black Mirror.

Similar to Behind Her Eyes, so I’m sort of glad it went the way it did instead.
AaronJohnsonStan Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Beyond the Sea was alright but it was sooooo annoying and predictable and the ending was trash but it was a good watch bc Aaron and Kate
