Egyptian lawyer sues Netflix for Cleopatra depiction

Suing Netflix is kind of ridiculous, ultimately it’s not that serious. But yes changing the race of an actual historical figure just for shock value is so dumb

except this is promoted as a documentary and as historical facts not fiction

a woman literally says in the "documentary": "I don't care what they tell you in school, cleopatra was black" which shows netflix or who ever is behind this "documentary" is purposefully trying to falsify history

If It's an historian will we listen what She has to tell us.

Anyway still ...if someone makes (again) a movie with Jesus looking like a swedish guy some people will make a tweet with "he actually looked like this...". End of story.

If someone would make a movie with a Jesus looking african some people would literally riot on the street :bird:

From the more reliable recostructions based on coins and sculptures, she was supposed to look like this with a striking nose.

remember the mess when ScarJo played that role in Ghost In The Shell? and that was YEARS ago

In this day and age, I don't think white actors can get away with playing other races with at least some amount of backlash :deadbanana4:

no she was macedonian greek

even the regular (non-rulers) ancient egyptians were mostly not black, the modern day egyptians (+other middle easterners) are the closest people genetically to ancient egyptians (obviously)

Most historians agree that she was not Black, she was Macedonian Greek. This comment on Reddit from a historian goes into some detail

As someone who majored in Classical Studies, the last sentence rings so true because we always see it done time and time again.

Suing is :rip:

But if they’re saying this is a documentary.. they probably should go with someone closer to how she actually was. For fictional characters, who gives a ****, but for real people.. eh

As he should! :clap3:Stop cultural appropriating Egyptian history and culture and stop trying to erase North African/ Middle Eastern/ Mediterranean ancestry and history in general! This can be common in general where some either whitewash or blackwash our history :shakeno: People want our history and influence so bad. Like I’m not the type of person to care about “cultural appropriation” tbh, like I would actually be kinda proud and honored if other group of people were to wear our clothes and aesthetic etc., but what I can’t stand by is when other people are trying to deny our own history in general and acting as if our DNA doesn’t exist.

Jada, you’re over!!!!!

I thought her hair color is constantly in flux among historians. Some say, brunette, red frizzy hair, blonde, like do we really know at this point?   I thought that she had brown to dark brown hair like most Macedonian women.

which cleopatra are we talking about cause there was a lot of them and fiction is allowed to retell stories. this is not an historic documentary

Why is he mentioning Islam as if it has anything to do with cleopatra's skin color :rip:

The fact that he is suing for promoting "Afrocentrism" but has probably had no problem seeing "Cleopatra" portrayed by Elizabeth Taylor on the big screen or seeing the probable likes of Angelina Jolie or Gal Gadot playing her tells me everything I need to know about him. :mazen:

elizabeth taylor and her people didn't claim that cleopatra was their ancestor and that egyptians are colonizers and invaders unlike that woman, the whole docu is basically supporting afrocentric claims that egyptians are arab invaders (which isn't true) and that's why egyptians are upset, you claiming that this is a white vs black issue shows that you know absolutely nothing about the issue

My main question is why Americans want to significantly change Cleopatra's race so badly.  Do people just hate Greeks?  Allergic to Greek food?  What is it?

Netflix at it again
