Polling shows the vast majority of Chicago residents agree with him that policing is not the solution to problems like these (violent unrest) and so they want more infrastructure and opportunities for young people over things like restrictive curfews and heavier policing. Obviously you don't have to hold those views, but it's clear most think that broken window policing has only further exacerbated young people and caused more social unrest and - ironically - crime. publikcitizen Posted April 18, 2023 Posted April 18, 2023 I live in Chicago and I love living here. I've lived here since I was born. It's really heartbreaking to see this happening, but I am not surprised this happened. Chicago is a very segregated city due to decades of racist policies and disinvestment. There are certain neighborhoods on the south and west sides that are very low income and where violence occur the most. In addition to underfunding or closing schools in those neighborhoods which are community anchors that have been destroyed, the relationship with the chicago police department is so fraught and there is no trust between the communities and the CPD. So there aren't many opportunities for these kids from low income neighborhoods and it's a cycle of negligent where their parents who have experienced the same things growing up and the cycle keeps going unless something significant can happen to dismantle that. I am not sure what is the right response to handling this matter and preventing it from happening again. The DA for Chicago, Kimm Foxx (who some of you may be familiar with when she handled Jussie Smollet's case) is kind of soft on crime. I don't think her policies work very well. And so even if these kids were arrested and made an example of, Foxx would go soft on them. Chicago is at a crossroad right now and it really depends on how the new mayor will lead. This summer may be volatile.
