I’ve been scared for my job for a while now. Not because there is no need for professionals in linguistics… but because many people will think ChatGPT and AI can do what we do. And it can’t.

This is legitimately scary. Imagine being made redundant because AI can do your job. Literally where do you go from there? :rip:

Yeah this is bullshit. People will try AI and after a few attempts they will realize that it's not really enough. AI is here to help us professionally, not compete with us.

In underpaying jobs, specifically.

You're absolutely underestimating it. It will decimate law, marketing, engineering, accounting; probably more but those are the ones I know for sure will be hurt. It does my first job (a social media job in the marketing industry) better than I did it. :rip: I remember being unsure of getting into the fashion industry but I know my job can't be done by AI, lol.

That said, I have no clue about the exact figure of jobs that will be affected.

It will help those professionals, it won't decimate their careers. Companies will never trust the AI's final output solely. It needs a human validation. AIs will not project houses like engineers. AI will not have the ability to read electric plans and improve it. Sure, AI's can give you a marketing plan, but who's going to execute it? People will always be needed.

Yeah, I do feel like there's a bit of fearmongering going on with the media and AI in general. BUT at the same time I do think there is some risk unfortunately, I just don't know if it's as much as the media makes it out to be.

You're absolutely right. But think about your own argument. Do they need a whole group of people? Or just one or two specialised ones who can then use AI to fill in the gaps? That's the point.

Even in its infancy, what it can do is incredible. Aside from what will work with it to decimate jobs (ie. corporate greed), it is one of the most dangerous inventions of our time. I'm not saying it's bad, by the way. But I know how corporations will exploit it.

The optimism in here. If AI is already replacing people now imagine after it becomes more sophisticated. :skull:

Well, it's up to us to adapt to a new reality. People said the same thing about computers 40 years ago. And look at us now, we rely on it 100%. I'm not saying AI won't erase some jobs, I'm just saying people need to adapt to it. AI is not messing with the lower paying jobs, it's messing with the high paying professions. Those professionals have the resources to adapt to a new reality. Marketing, Engineering, IT, those are the jobs that will be affected by AI. And let me tell you, those are not poor people that can't afford to adapt to a new way of work.

My job is going to be highly affected by AI. What I'm doing, though, is working directly with out managers on implementing GPT into our business to help our customers. I hold the key on how to manage this whole thing. My team will struggle much less now having to support demanding customers. Instead of training customers, we're working on training GPT to serve us. It reduces our workload, but we're all still needed. The AI will never be able to do what we humans do.

Imagine a 50 year old dad, working to take care of his family's needs (housing, education, etc), suddenly getting replaced by AI and he's told to learn a new skill. :deadbanana:

You guys are literally acting like the stupid boomers that thought computers and telephones would be the end of society because they affected phone operators and typing professionals 40 years ago. Yeah, people those prefessions were killed, but that was for the best.

Back in the day they scared people into thinking that computers will take all their jobs. Instead of cowering in fear, we learned to integrate them into the jobs. People got smarter and learned to use technology to make work more efficient. A lot of types of jobs were eradicated, yes, but it didn't destroy our civilization. What we need is a good plan how to handle AI and its effects. Politics and science need to get to planning out how to integrate AI in a productive manner. I see a huge issue of legal questions. If the AI works on its own, who is responsible for the mistakes it makes? AI will need human support fir a long time just like self-driving cars need a driver behind the wheel. Fearmongering and hysteria will only lead to chaos.

That happens with or without AI....New software, new OS versions are released constantly. If you feel like you're invalid at 50, maybe you should just not work. Imagine when sales processes went from being managed on Excel to Salesforce a few years ago, do you think the 50yo dads gave up on their jobs or do you think they learned how to use Salesforce?
