Do you think Drag Queens should read fairytales to children?

Well.

what's wrong with it? they are reading fairytales not explicit or violent stories

I don't really "get it" as someone who never grew up with it, but I don't see the problem. I *personally* find it a little bit strange, but far be it from me to tell someone they can't do it. :michael:

Yes, they probably read them better than most adults.

Of course.

Yes. Reading is fundamental

Of course. Clowns are just straight drag queen and no one has issues with clowns. :celestial5:

Since a decreasing number of parents read for their children, I welcome anyone who will read for them.

There is nothing inherently wrong with it. It's a non-issue.

Truthfully I don't understand the recent fascination with drag queens + kids, from either side.

Drag is a mostly adult form of entertainment and while there is nothing inherently sexual about it, I don't get why parents would specifically choose a drag queen to read a story to their kid. Feels like parents using their kids to show off how open minded they are.

On the flip side, drag queens are not the ones abusing children so I don't understand why conservatives are so up in arms as long as the parents are okay with it.

if a child’s parents wants to bring them to a drag queen story hour as a form of harmless entertainment, i don’t think it’s inherently wrong. a parent can choose to bring their child to a screening of Pulp Fiction if they wanted to, it’s completely legal. i don’t know when everyone decided to draw the line at people in costumes and wigs reading books :rip:

for me, personally, IN MY OPINION (If we're allowed those without WPs) it doesn't make sense, like why is this the hill certain people choose to die on? I don't understand the relationship between drag and childhood. And before anyone quotes me with 'kids have to see that u can be a man and dress up as a woman', I think that's something that they can internalize naturally...

Of course, why not?

Sure. What's the problem?.

Yes, there is no problem with it. The Catholic Church has abused more children than drag queens ever have.

This. And it's overwhelmingly events that parents choose to bring their kids to. That's their choice. :celestial5:

its deflection from firearms now being the number one killer of children and teens + pedophilic right-wing nuts projecting.

first of all, no one should be reading fairytales

As a gay man, I can’t imagine ever willingly putting myself in a position where I have to interact with children. There is so much taboo and risk of false accusations around it to begin with that I stay far away, but some of that is conditioning from growing up in the bigoted south. To me, it just isn’t worth the drama. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with it, I prefer to stay away from situations where people show up with guns to protest.

I don’t understand why this is the hill so many have chosen to die on lately, and it’s making it worse for the entire LGBTQ community.

Yes. They are no different from the guys who play fairytale characters at Disneyland

There's no "relationship" between children and drag. It's that drag is now a form of mainstream pageantry and people often want to "give back" to their communities that include schools and children.

It's why Miss America has nothing to do with kids and yet..

I mean, I'd feel safer with drag queens reading to kids than cops, and yet...

40% of American cops have a history of domestic violence. Are your kids safe in the classroom with them? :celestial5:

while i’m personally more entertained by drag queens that perform their drag specifically for adults in nightclubs, comedy shows, etc., i can understand why a drag queen might want to present themselves as an example of someone who did not have to follow the socially constructed “gender norms” to still be happy, successful, and to still contribute to society in a positive way. maybe some drag queens grew up being that kid who was somewhere in between gender norms, and was faced with horrible backlash from their families and society as a result, and they feel like maybe if some child is going through that now they might need to see a positive representation of someone who is like them and is still happy and accepted.

on a more surface level, drag is an art form that covers a broad spectrum, ranging from explicit/adult-oriented content to completely harmless entertainment that is more focused on the colorful effervescence and fantasy of drag rather than its more raunchy counterparts. perhaps there are drag queens that represent the latter example and kids react to them the same way they would react to a Disneyland mascot or a clown at a birthday party, and they don’t mind letting children be entertained by them. btw i’m not trying to drag you or say your viewpoint is wrong or right, but i do think there is some nuance that can be added to the “why does drag need to be funneled to children” conversation going on these days.

That's alarmingly high jeez

I mean, if appropriately dressed, why not. Although can't see why there's a need for it in the first place.

Posted

No.

Fairytales are between a man and woman who dress as a man and woman. Anything else is offensive to my god and my sense of reality. How will I explain to my child why people dress up as things they are not for fun?! Doing any interaction with my child hurts me deeply. I hate being a parent. :doc:

I would 1000X prefer a drag Queen read fairy tales to my child than, for example, a youth pastor. This truly feels like a nonissue that has been amplified the last few years.
