GlamSlam Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 I've just been reading about it on another forum, so please don't shoot the messenger, but it appears Janet has lost control of her back catalogue. In 2018, she used her rights to songs from Control, Rhythm Nation 1814, janet. and The Velvet Rope as collateral in a new contract with a company called Cinq Music Group, and was supposed to deliver a new album to them by a certain date. She failed to do so, and they published a legal notice on the front page of a Billboard bulletin last October stating that the rights to her past hits will now go to auction. You can read the "NOTIFICATION OF DISPOSITION OF COLLATERAL" at the bottom of the first page here: https://www.billboard.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/october-14-2022-billboard-bulletin.pdf I'm a huge Janet fan and found it quite shocking. What do you guys think?
FreeXone Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 I feel someone brought them back for her cause she reupdated her music videos and some of her Riaa Certs were done idk it’s all so STRANGE and not like her ….her team is a TRAGEDY
DammnBaby Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 My understanding is that this auction, while advertised, ultimately did not take place (those who registered were told that it was cancelled). It sounds very much like a negotiation pressure tactic. Regardless, the treatment of her legacy and catalogue by Janet and her team is atrocious. She could be doing so much more.
SoldierofLove Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 I think we would’ve heard by now if someone bought the rights to her catalog. It’s crazy that it even got to the point of an auction announcement though.
Bloodflowers. Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 She recently uploaded All Nite (Don't Stop) on YouTube so I don't think so

This is comforting, do you have an inside source or know anyone who registered? I wish we could get some type of update on what has happened with her album. Those sessions were paid for and so much time was spent and yet not a single word from any producer, writer, label executive, management etc in years. It seems most obvious thar something beyond a simple disagreement went down? Could Cinq be holding the recordings hostage after Janet refused to release it during the agreed time? Why did the documentary not coincide with an album when the album was teased at the end of it? Why did Janet include an older song not from the Black Diamond sessions at the end of the documentary instead of something that was actually gonna be released? Was she already having problems with the label back in 2021 when the documentary was being finished? So many unanswered questions.

I have most of the same questions you have, but I think I can clarify this one. I'd probably classify "Luv I Luv" as being from the Black Diamond sessions. It was done with "Made for Now" and this other "stress reliever" song with Harmony Samuels and Tommy Parker. "MFN" was supposed to lead into an EP released under Cinq, which we know didn't happen. I'm thinking the EP turned into what 2020 "Black Diamond" became. Thinking about all this, it makes me wonder if this label issue could be why she wasn't on Jimmy and Terry's album?
Slap Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 Yikes this is so scary she had the best record deal in the industry in the 90’s so I really hope she owns her music still. She really should have released an album and honestly she would do well to go independent and hire a decent team. They could build her residual income through streaming easily to pay for it.
Flare Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 This is so interesting. Deep music industry mess. Poor Janet, I hope it’s all resolved. Will keep an eye on this but I do think she owns her back catalog again.
Pop Life Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 This is the same woman who at one point in time had the best record deal in the business, surpassing even her brother Michael. Her team used to be impeccable!
