Miss Show Business Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 This ain't it. Why not advocate for tough social media regulations that would impact all social media in ways that it needs to be? I'm sure a bill could easily be written that would regulate the privacy aspect of these social media companies. To me, it just sounds like they want to rush to ban the app because of its Chinese origins, yet the US based companies that have privacy concerns are just fine. It just seems kind of hypocritical.
CottageHore Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 I mean this was obviously what they were going to do. And if TikTok doesn’t, they can say goodbye to the 66 million monthly American users that they rely on to keep their app going. This is exactly what happened with Grindr. They sold to an American company and now everything is “fine”.
MusicLoverDude Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 So they want to ban TikTok but not focus on laws that actually protect people like gun control or LGBT rights or abortion rights?

The main problem is that Bytedance can easily access US TikTok user data despite their PR saying otherwise. The US Govt apparently has proof of this if we are to believe them. On the other hand, it’s not really that problematic since almost all US tech companies, search engines, information sites, news sites, streaming platforms, and social networks are banned in mainland China. 39 minutes ago, MusicLoverDude said: So they want to ban TikTok but not focus on laws that actually protect people like gun control or LGBT rights or abortion rights? This is one of the few proposals by congress that has bipartisan support. A majority of the things you just mentioned are blocked by Republicans.
scenekiller Posted March 15, 2023 Posted March 15, 2023 Good, get rid of it. The quality content that’s on there is far outweighed by all the bad TikTok does for society.

I get videos about social justice, camping, science, and Leftist commentary. So, no, TT does not deserve to get banned. Maybe people should watch productive content?

I never said it didn’t have any good content at all. Hence why I said “the good content is far outweighed by the bad it does for society.”

Tiktok culture is responsible for dumb stuff like the "School Shooting Challenge" where people would call in fake shooting reports to schools to get them swatted for clout. Of course, social media trends have always been destructive to varying degrees, like Planking off of dangerous edges and swallowing Tide Pods. For people to act like TikTok is uniquely bad in this regard would be revisionist.

After some of these cases were investigated, it was found out that a lot of these challenges originated on Facebook. Btw, the tide pod challenge was...years ago. Before TikTok was even a thing. That's what I was saying... that the Tide Pod and Planking challenges were from OTHER social media platforms...
Mean Trees Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Very smart move. It's not like China is the world's biggest manufacturer and the US barely makes anything except maybe trash processed foodstuffs... A Chinese sanction against the US would have an impact.
Revolution Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Facebook and Twitter are banned in China so Chinese spyware should be banned in USA
magazine Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 The clown came back to bite. They should have sold to microsoft when they could! It probably would've flopped and the world would be saved!
Letemtalk Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Americans claim to support free markets, but they hate free market competition to American social media companies.

I mean, even the "free markets" in the US aren't really free. This country is a joke.
Vermillion Posted March 16, 2023 Author Posted March 16, 2023 I was wondering when the next shoe would drop given no sense of urgency until now, and here it is. Given this, it's not a matter of if but when the app's gone. ByteDance, unlike Grindr, won't cave - I firmly believe that. OP updated.
