Ashanti - "Only U"

Looking back, this was VERY iconic but I can see why people weren’t feeling Ashanti for this. Her brand was like girl next door, this was too produced/polished/high budget. She would have needed to crossover more into the pop lane/radio and they would have appreciated this more. This is a peak Britney tier video. Urban listeners were very ungrateful back then and left her to fight up the charts.

this is an odd take. her brand was never girl next door lol how does her looking, sounding and being expensive warrant people not supporting it or her lol by this time beyonce and rihanna and ciara were coming out on the come up WITH THEATRICS mind you and unfortunately ashanti was left behind. she definitely had more legs left in her to reign longer but her legacy in r n b is definitely cemented as 2000-2005 was her time for sure. with the musical landscape eventually going pop i don't think unfortunately she would've crossed over or even be interested in that. this song should've been her biggest hit for sure. it's lacked with a certain something that makes it special.

Ashanti and this song are so underrated. This should have been #1 for weeks.

omg this is a SLAY. gave everything what gays wanted from her.

my favorite song/single by her by far!!!!

a huge misstep and probably the biggest reason why this wasn't another #1 from her was not having a remix featuring a hot rapper right after the main edit release. actually the way the whole era was deemed to flop after only u not being a huge hit is something to discuss because I will never understand how you came from being the hot main r&b girl to nobody in months.

this is a perfect song, everything about it - flawless

ashanti deserves more flowers than she's given

The rest of your post can just go in the trash because that’s 100% wrong. It’s literally how Ashanti was marketed and there’s 1 million interviews from Irv and others discussing it. Maybe you don’t understand “girl next door” as a concept but I’m not saying Britney Spears, Disney channel, girl next door.

The r&b and black community has its own type of “girl next door” trope. Nunu from ATL, any role Megan Good played in the 2000s, etc. Ashanti was marketed in that lane originally.  :bird:

I have never seen this version either. The choreography is a mess.

Lol yes but I do miss this type of over-editted, over-saturated Hype Williams videos

One of the greatest. A moment in pop and r&b history.

I feel like this should’ve been a bigger hit. But it did remind me of something Aaliyah would’ve come out with in 04 had she had the chance.

i lowkey feel like she was sabotaged behind the scenes because it made no sense for her to experience the decline that she did in her third era

Such a tune! I also loved Touch my Body from that era, not sure if it was released though

One of the best songs of all time, Ashanti's early 00's run is still unmatched.

I think this is her best song. I never understood why this flopped and they completely abandoned the project.
