Can't wait for the pro nuclear crowd to arrive in this thread and tell us that nuclear power has no carbon emissions, so when the submarines actually get built in 2055, this will be a very good thing for the environment.

Also the Virginia-class submarines are using highly enriched uranium (weapons grade) in their reactors, so it's highly likely these will be the same. But even though the highly enriched uranium is being transferred between two countries, in this case the USA and Australia, we aren't going to call that nuclear proliferation, because "developed world" or something.

Just imagine if it was China or Pakistan transferring highly enriched uranium to another Asian country.

Concern over China primarily.

It's embarrassing but that's how ineffective our leadership is across the board. Same goes for most countries worldwide.

An excessive amount of money spent and for what?

There are always contingencies built into projects of this size, when they span multiple decades.

This means the price is variable and $385b isn't the final price.

Just wait for the final numbers.

i love daddy albo, but i don't see how this is a wise financial decision

surely we could get better value with something that won't take 30+ years to deliver

I think these are the same people who attack solar panel expansion in Australia cause most are built in China, but have no qualms about getting nuclear weaponry from America. :toofunny3:

Fun fact - it would cost less than half of this project to put solar panels on the roof of every home in Australia:

Guess we know where the priorities of Australia lie! :cm:

Could they do something about the housing crisis first please? Every apartment/house to rent in Sydney is getting 100 applications and other cities aren’t far behind.

Just in time for the upcoming World Water War :wave2:

Because, why invest in building a sustainable country when you could just attack other countries for natural resources :swan:? Humanity is in shambles :toofunny3:

Um, the entire country almost burnt down in 2020. I think other things should be prioritized.

All that tax payers money put to waste. Loves it! :clap3::eatpopcorn:

The Australian government has always been a miracle especially since scot Morrison.

Money that could have been spent increasing housing supply :ace: Albo is doing alright as PM but I absolutely resent that they're going ahead with this. Terrible. Makes me feel good about voting for the Greens.

The fact that we are footing the bill even though this just makes us an arm of American foreign policy :ace: Why are we hitching ourselves to a country that is almost certain to elect a deranged Republican like Tucker Carlson, Donald Trump or Ron DeSantis in the next 10 years :ace::ace::ace::ace:

Like I genuinely am worried about the CCP but this is just not it. Bring back Kevin Rudd and Julia they had our relationship with China under control.

They might not even have to elect them. Look at what almost happened in January 2021. The goal of the insurrection was to block the electoral college confirmation of Joe Biden as president and they came close to succeeding. What would have happened after than is unclear, but history shows us that when people like Trump gain power or maintain power by illegitimate means, they don't hand that power back to the voters in a hurry. Then Australia would be depending on a Russian aligned dictatorship for it's defence.

What is the chance of the US remaining a democracy in the 2050s when it's already slipping down the Democracy Index every year and is no longer considered a full democracy?

The smart course for countries like Australia is to keep trading with the US and China, but make sure they don't become too dependant on either.

How is Albo doing alright as PM? Housing supply issues, cost of living issues, insane inflation, wage stagnation, youth crime epidemic… and his priorities the past month have been this outrageous submarine deal and the indigenous voice to parliament - virtue signalling at its finest. It’s time to get real, if this were a Liberal Prime Minister he’d be getting dragged endlessly.

This extravagant AUKUS deal has only worsened relations with China. Like what is happening??

Our relationship with China has been on the mend since Labor took office though, despite this flop bipartisan deal.

We are dealing with all the challenges you mention yes but it's unfair to blame Albo for them all. He could be doing far, far more and thus why I said 'alright', but we are a small country and the PM is not god. He can't fix inflation, cost of living or housing supply by waving his hands. These are huge systemic issues affected by factors outside of Australia. Have reasonable expectations of your politicians.

Also, Indigenous representation is a significant moral question for our country as well, and I disagree with your dismissal of it as trivial.
