It’s actually insane that so many issues can be traced back to that devil :deadbanana2:

The Iran hostage crisis was a diplomatic standoff between the United States and Iran. Fifty-two American diplomats and citizens were held hostage after a group of militarized Iranian college students belonging to the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line, who supported the Iranian Revolution, took over the U.S. Embassy in Tehran[3][4] and took them as hostages. The hostages were held for 444 days, from November 4, 1979 to their release on January 20, 1981.

Western media described the crisis as an "entanglement" of "vengeance and mutual incomprehension."[5] U.S.

President Jimmy Carter called the hostage-taking an act of "blackmail" and the hostages "victims of terrorism and anarchy."[6] In Iran, it was widely seen as an act against the U.S. and its influence in Iran, including its perceived attempts to undermine the Iranian Revolution and its longstanding support of the shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in 1979.[7]

After Shah Pahlavi was overthrown, he was granted asylum and admitted to the U.S. for cancer treatment. The new Iranian regime demanded his return in order to stand trial for the crimes he was accused of committing against Iranians during his rule through his secret police. These demands were rejected, which Iran saw as U.S. complicity in those abuses.

For those without a basic understanding of US foreign policy. And how many things would be different if the US didn't, just some 20 years prior, do everything in its power to unseat a secular, popular leader in Iran.

The US always ******* around and finding out. :deadbanana4:

I always wonder how different things would be if Carter was re-elected or if Gore got elected instead of Bush. :jonny:

The Carter love-in is interesting. The man who ushered in austerity measures and the ''Carter Doctrine'' in the Middle East. The dude was a precursor to Reagan. He wasn't just a sweet old gentleman from GA.

Oh and I'm sure the Iranian gov't cared about what an American diplomat thought.

He had his flaws, but compared to the Neoliberal policies that defined Biden, Obama and (especially) Clinton’s presidency, he was a significant upgrade. He was the tail end of the new deal era Dems

All of this :coffee2:

No point in me adding anything. Although the timing right before a likely Trump indictment makes this moment feel like an out-of-body experience.
