It was good and received applause but not enthusiastically and nobody stood up that I saw. The energy was a lot more palpable with Unstoppable. The president of TIFF even said in his introduction speech that he voted for the film for the People's Choice! Are there any articles about the movies with most buzz from TIFF? So far, I've only heard Pamela and JLo getting buzz

Amazon is doing this solely so it can be eligible for awards (Golden Globes and Academy have criteria for min num of theatres etc). Maybe if it has enough buzz, they will expand theather reach 1

New York Post (they're usually notoriously hard on Jen). 'Unstoppable' review: Jennifer Lopez stars in a fantastic, inspiring sports movie 3.5 stars out of 4 "Ceaseless in her belief though is Judy, played by Lopez in one of her best performances in a minute. Her arc as a struggling mother of several kids is every bit as involving as Anthony's and gets its proper due. X~MoviePoP Posted September 7 Posted September 7 I expect 65 metacritic (hoping for a 70+) and 80-80% RT
insomniac Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Collider - 7/10 "'Unstoppable' is a simple but pleasing biopic about a wrestling champion that only had one leg. Pros - Jerome honors Anthony Robles' legacy with a visible commitment to get in shape and portray authentic wrestling scenes. - There is an evident chemistry between - Jerome and supporting actors like Lopez and Cheadle. - William Goldenberg's directing is purposeful by keeping the film concise and dynamic. Cons - Judy Robles and Coach Charles are underdeveloped, despite the actors' notable performances. - The script has several cliché lines that prevent it from being a dense sports drama." https://collider.com/unstoppable-review/
insomniac Posted September 8 Posted September 8 The AU Review - 3.5 out of 5 "Jennifer Lopez in a strong turn that could charm voters come awards season" https://www.theaureview.com/watch/unstoppable-tiff-2024-review/
insomniac Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Screen Daily After premiering as a Gala Screening at Toronto, where it garnered early awards buzz for Jerome (Moonlight), Amazon MGM Studios plans to position the throwback mid-budget drama in the awards window with a December release. (…) Judy is also learning to become a independent single mother and Lopez pulls from a deep well of sadness that never tips over into maudlin. (…) While there is nothing surprising in Unstoppable, the film works as a tightly crafted take on the formula. https://www.screendaily.com/reviews/unstoppable-toronto-review/5196998.article
insomniac Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Guardian (3 out of 5) Unstoppable review – Jennifer Lopez and Jharrel Jerome lift routine sports drama (…) Lopez is an actor who has regretfully chosen not to even vaguely challenge herself since she delivered her most textured performance to date in 2019's crowd-wowing Toronto premiere Hustlers. Successful yet slapdash streaming slop like Shotgun Wedding or this summer's feeble Netflix thriller Atlas have allowed us to forget what she can do with more grounded material. It's an unusual supporting role for the star but she has guts and a warm maternalism that add depth to family scenes than can often feel a little rote. https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/sep/08/unstoppable-review-jennifer-lopez-jharrel-jerome-sports-drama
insomniac Posted September 8 Posted September 8 Popculture Reviews 3.5 stars out of 5 "Other standout performances come from Jennifer Lopez through a fierce supporting role as a mother who will do all she can for her kids to thrive and Don Cheadle. (…) William Goldenberg's star-studded sports dramamay follow the typical formula of the genre, but it did exactly what it was supposed to do. With stunning direction to highlight the physicality of wrestling and several emotional themes, Unstoppable is that feel-good movie we'll never tire of craving. The film contains an exceptional performance from Jharrel Jerome, and convincing support cast members do beautiful jobs as well. The real triumph here is the simple reminder that with hard work and determination, anything is possible." https://popculturereviews.com/2024/09/07/unstoppable-tiff-review/

Her role in Hustlers did a lot of noise by this time Yeah it's timid buzz. But also veeeeery early days. All the reviews are very good at least. The film isn't on many people's radar yet. Let's see! There's a few more festivals it'll play these next weeks.

insomniac Posted September 8 Posted September 8 1 hour ago, Bloodflowers. said: There are a few bad rotten tomato scores from critics saying film is nothing special 2 out of 7 so far. Only one of them meaningful-ish (IndieWire) and even that review reads very biased. The industry trades like Deadline, THR and Variety very positive. They hold more weight. It's early days as we need more reviews to come in, but generally the reception is very good. The president of TIFF even voted for the film as People's Choice. One of her biggest hated reviewer in over 20 years of her film career (Roger Friedman) praised her and said Oscar worthy. So I think it's too early to base off two rotten RT reviews while there's 5 fresh RT ones. But let's wait and see! 1
NoAngelus Posted September 9 Posted September 9 6 hours ago, moech said: THE OSCAR BUZZ IS REAL THIS TIME . WHAT A QUEEN I don't know... Reviews on Letterboxd are very mid. With Hustlers she had success of a movie carrying her throughout the season and a lot meatier role than just playing a stepmother. This is gonna be streaming movie, it won't have much of an impact.
