Achilles. Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I’m pretty sure we tried doing atrl film awards once or twice like a decade ago. The awardsworthy and goldderby awards get listed on imdb, so we could be that legit at least. 1
Liafen Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Cut to 5 years later the 11 users who participated in AFCAs inaugural edition are holding the awards ceremony in the Beverly Hills Hotel & running Oscar szn like the navy. 1 1

ALittleGauche Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Honestly, someone should start it for this year. I’m actively working through my list of films from 2023, and I’m sure many others here are too. This thread is just as active as the Drag Race one, and they have nominations and lists and rankings there all the time. 1
hausofdave Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Triet has the uphill battle of being both a woman and a relative unknown (on top of the film being more praised for its acting and writing). These other recent Euro passion picks were men with established careers (Östlund - Force Majeure & The Square and Lanthimos - Dogtooth and The Lobster). Glazer fits the bill much more and has too much highbrow critics support (Boston, LA and NSFC) to ignore

Donquizote Posted January 7 Posted January 7 The support for Past Lives is crazy. The movie has so much passion amongst Oscar voters. I won't be surprised if Greta Lee got nominated for Best Actress and Celine Song won Best Screenplay 1

Bey'Knight Posted January 7 Posted January 7 13 hours ago, Achilles. said: As for the Best Actress race, my biggest doubt with Gladstone has always been her lack of “name” / status in the industry. Lead acting races greatly favor famous people. But I think the unique factors of her campaign negate a lot of that. Gladstone is the critical favorite, she’s in a Scorsese film and she’s the strongest aspect of the film on the awards circuit. Plus it just wouldn’t look good if any white people win for Killers but she goes empty-handed. It goes against conventional thinking at this point, but I feel her only competition for the win is actually Margot Robbie (even if there’s a possibility Robbie won’t even be nominated). But there is absolutely a nightmare timeline where she wins some precursors and/or she gets carried along in a Barbie sweep. I don’t see any of the others contending for the win at all. Greta Lee can’t get ahead of Gladstone as the top woman of color in competition, and Sandra Huller won’t get ahead of her as the top “no name” actress in competition. Maestro will win for Cooper if anything, no matter how hard people have pushed the “it’s Carey’s movie, actually” narrative. And I have this suspicion that Poor Things is gonna underperform expectations in terms of wins. You have to consider that Awards are anything but meritocratic. There’s not a single person or even committee, like BAFTAs, ensuring the final outcome makes a good PR day. If it were Ryan Gosling wouldn’t have the best ATL chances for a film called Barbie, Green book wouldn’t have won BP, Chadwick would have won that damn oscar etc Also the internet probably captures a meagre fraction of academy voting membership. For all the hoopla about the Riseborough campaign last week, she still got in cus the folks voting for her don’t even need to engage in the conversation, let alone defend her.
Dark Phoenix Posted January 7 Posted January 7 3 hours ago, enchanted0 said: "Monster" is true east Asian excellence in 2023, iykyk Oh god it’s perfect, honestly my #3 film of the year with Poor Things and The Holdovers. Actually it was a great year for Japanese cinema: Monster, Perfect Days, Godzilla -1.0 and The Boy and the Heron. Also I’m here to defend The Holdovers until the end from the moment I left the screening in late October, it was that good and I knew from that moment that Da’Vine, Paul and Original Screenplay deserved Oscars. 1
Riot Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I just know that the HFPA struggled hard to decide which Best Supporting Actor winner would bring more ratings between Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Gosling 1
Komet Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Not the anti-campaing from the main stars, it's going from worse to worser for this movie Keep in mind this somehow cost 100m ??

X~MoviePoP Posted January 7 Posted January 7 So i watched the holdovers. Great film, dominic is a star..such a natural and funny actor. Idk how he did it. But...i felt like divine needed more range? Felt like her character was one note and i dont see why shes winning all the awards. I personally thought danielle brooks was more captivating 1 1
Lovett Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Just watched Past Lives and it was so moving and sad! I loved it. Greta was superb, but I wish Teo Yoo was in awards conversations. He broke my heart! He deserves as much acclaim as Greta, they were both exceptional. 2
