Fennell has never made anything as good as Little Women or even Ladybird :deadbanana:be serious.

It was literally her worst film and i've yet to see Saltburn but Gerwig could only DREAM of having a movie as unrelenting, non-corny and brilliantly written as Promising Young Woman.

I hope miss Gewrgig is at least good at acting because i can't find a single strand of talent in her directing/writing.

emerald's faux-edginess is very corny. the feminist commentary is just as hamfisted, dumbed down, and obvious in promising young woman as it is in barbie. they're two sides of the same coin tbh.

that said, i enjoyed saltburn (for what it is) and i've always liked ladybird (for what it is). :ryan3:

I think I let the Ferrari hype and excellent trailer set my expectations too high; was disappointing and features maybe the worst / miscast performance of the year in Shailene Woodley. The ensemble in general was chaotic; so much of the dialogue was being garbled up with jarring accent work. Individual scenes had my eyes glazing over. The movie shines with the racing sequences and anytime Penélope gets to devour with just her eyes but overall was a slog. Just one I didn’t connect with.

i'll always think of emerald as the person who ruined killing eve by shifting the focus as much as possible onto that jodie person when it had been set up as a vehicle for asian excellence sandra oh.

the way Emi Li Stōn is about to snatch again… we CAN stand it!

They're not giving Emi Li another oscar so soon for some sci-fi comedy over awarding an Indigenous actress from a BP frontrunner about racial injustices... Lee Lee can start working on her speech tbh

Oscar winner Li Li Gladstōn has a nice ring to it. Too bad her role felt like a Supporting one, wish she entered that race & won after fellow Asian excellence Jié Mi Li

Maestro was an okay movie, good performance by the 2 leads especially Carey who carried hard, great cinematography but the screenplay is very weak and the worst part, at the end of the movie I didn't know anything about the real person Brad was imitating, it felt like a generic gay husband with a wife story

Miss Gladstone has that Oscar on LOCK. They will NOT pass on the opportunity to award an indigenous actress from a BP nominee. It doesn’t matter if her role feels more like a supporting one or whatever :giraffe:

This is the same category that until last year had only awarded one POC in its almost century long history.

Lbr they'll be patting themselves on the back for the next 10 years for giving Michelle Yeoh that oscar lol

marlon brando declined his best actor win for the godfather and had a native american activist accept on his behalf and speak about the racist depiction of native americans in hollywood (this was especially hot button and topical at the time because of the protests at wounded knee). this was before white savior activism was popular with the academy like it is today, so she was booed and heckled on live TV. clint eastwood made fun of her on stage right after and supposedly john wayne was so angry he tried to literally jump her. it was a pretty shameful stain on the oscars and they publicly apologized last year and created an exhibit in the academy museum.

i'm not sure if they'll mention it explicitly at this year's ceremony because it's recently come out that the activist, sacheen littlefeather, may have rachel dolezal'd her native credentials, but it'll definitely be in the ether in relation to killers of the flower moon and lily's nomination for sure.
