Oppenheimer’s small chance is gone; adapted is done. Cord Jefferson will be giving an Oscar speech next week.

I think that the possible surprise winners might be:

  • Godzilla Minus One for Visual Effects
  • The Zone of Interest for Sound
  • I'm Just Ken for Song

Who are you predecting?

Hmm USC don't have the best track record at predicting the Oscars, especially when the USC winner did not coincide with the Best Picture winner. Also Barbie is nominated at the Oscars in this category so higher chance for a vote split which would favour Oppenheimer. So I think there is still a chance they will want to give Oppenheimer as many awards as possible next Sunday including this one. I would prefer Zone to get Sound

Oppenheimer literally has no major Industry awards for Screenplay now. assuming AF wins the WGA like it has everywhere, the only possible comparison to Oppenheimer winning is when Precious managed to win in a pretty unexplainable upset. there’s also Birdman, Argo, ROTK, and Slumdog Millionaire, but they all at least won something to indicate Screenplay was happening . Argo won WGA and USC, Birdman won GG and CC, ROTK won BAFTA, etc. An Oppenheimer win would be borderline unprecedented now.

bafta+scripter:

call me by your name = oscar

big short = oscar

social network = oscar

up in the air = loss after a dispute over writing credits

slumdog = oscar

English patient = loss

schindler = oscar

not a ton of matchups.

theoretically Barbie could split votes w AF but

a) the industry passion for Barbie has evidently been sagging

b) it's more likely to split votes with PT given that both films are centered around absurdist comedy as compared to AF sharper, more satirical flair

Honestly, does anyone care about Barbie's backlash, aside from some people who don't watch indie/arthouse movie? :suburban:

So far, SAG and BAFTA seem not to care about the backlash :suburban:

Eddie’s has been historically discriminatory toward non-English animated films. The only foreign language animated film nominated in ACE history, I Lost My Body, backed by Netflix. The fact that they nominated Super Mario over Heron should be enough to indicate what sort of voters they are. Heron can win and break this pattern. or Spidey w the GG+BAFTA combo

huh, I just found out the writer of zendaya's upcoming love triangle film Challengers is a first time screenwriter who's the white husband of Celine Song, current nominee for Past Lives, which was slightly inspired by their relationship.

Yeah I just saw Barbie and from the hype I thought the script would be much better. I have no idea how Ferrara got nominated for such an unexceptional performance.
