Something needs to happen to make Anatomy Of A Fall win best picture.

@bafta do sumn!!!!!!!!!!!

Oppenheimer being this universally loved (not just by the pretentious Nolan stans) is as much of a mystery to me as Mahershala Ali winning the Oscar for his absolutely NOTHING of a performance in Snoozelight.

Ali played the supportive straight father figure of a troubled gay, I think liberal voters love that just like they love white saviours :toofunny3:

He was ok and just didn’t have that strong competition. Nothing will be as bad as Laura Dern sweeping for that nothing performance though.

Laura was much more present in the film and her first few scenes were fierce and well acted. #ImWithHer :keir:

It did go awry after a while though, i don't remember if it was the writing or her acting that became kinda bad... I think it was both but yes, it went downhill at some point.

Ali was never bad in Boreland, it was just literally NOTHING ??? Maybe 3 quiet scenes and it got him the little golden man ? And it's STILL seen as deserved to this day ???? :biblio:

But i will say, looking at how brilliant he was in Green Book, they did predict he had insane talent and potential inside of him. That was a deserved Oscar.

I agree he was good in Green Book and deserved to win against the rest of those nominees, though there might be a case for category fraud as he's essentially a co-lead. Winning 2 oscars in such a short period of time for a relative unknown is so strange though, they could've spread the love around more by giving his award for Moonlight to a young performer like Lucas Hedges for once, who was IMO easily best in show in Manchester (both Affleck and Williams were so overrated in that movie)

Hedges was good but better than Affleck??? :deadbanana4:

For all his faults, Affleck’s win was one of the best and most deserving wins of the decade IMO.

If Murphy wins, he will presumably accept the award from his Sunshine (2007) co-star Michelle Yeoh. If Giamatti wins, he will also be accepting an award from a former co-star as he and Yeoh were both in Gunpowder Milkshake. If Lily Gladstone wins, she will presumably accept the award from her KOTFM co-star Brendan Fraser

I forgot Brendan Fraser was in KOTFM. What a godawful performance.

i just interpreted his theatrics as of the time when lawyers were all about that and over the top putting on a show for the gallery and jury. let’s be honest, there have been loads of over the top lawyer performances in the history of movies, so people just need to crack on

Yeah I think so, he gave that movie some much needed breadth.

Affleck playing a mumbling, downtrodden nihilist was nothing extraordinary for me

When Paloma is announced as a 6th surprise Best Actress nominee and SWEEPS :ryan3:

The conversation around Barbie is absurd because none of the acting performances deserved award recognition.

Not a single performance from that film were Oscar performances and they pale in comparison to their peers. Graner from Anatomy of a Fall should’ve taken Gosling’s spot and the ***** had a better performance than America Ferrara’s. Did you see that overdose scene? Incredible for a pet :clap3:

I don’t understand the conversation around Greta being “snubbed” either. Snubbed from what? Why would she be nominated? I am all about women deserving their flowers, but was she supposed to be nominated because she was the first woman to direct a well-received, $1B film? Ryan Coogler and F. Gary Gray were the first Black directors to direct well-received, $1B films and no one made a sound. Nobody cared. If Coogler didn’t get it, why did they think Greta was?

Oscar voting period: 22-27 February 2024

SAG ceremony: 24 February 2024 (3 days of effect on Oscar)

BAFTA ceremony: 18 February 2024 (full 5 days of effect on Oscar)

Whoever wins BAFTA will have a BIG boost at winning Oscar.

SAG winner will also have a last-minute surge at winning Oscar.

No lock so far. Very exciting race.

BAFTA nominated Teo Yoo as Best Actor and ghosted Greta Lee when it's been the other way around ALL season

Let's hope they serve taste again and give it to 'Anatomy of a Fall' or 'Poor Things' over Oppenheimer, it will be the best ramp up just before the Oscar voting starts

If they could give the forgettable All Quiet On The Western Front Best Picture last year, then let's hope the international branch amps up the taste with those two picks then :clap3:

greta lee being snubbed should be a far bigger story than it is. she was so great in past lives that i honestly think she should have been a front runner. no matter how much you like margot in barbie, there is no world she had a chance at winning if she got nominated imo.

For Best Film, BAFTA has gone

2014: Boyhood

2015: The Revenant

2016: La La Land

2017: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

2018: Roma

2019: 1917

2020: Nomadland

2021: The Power of the Dog

2022: All Quiet on the Western Front

2023: ???

For almost the past 10 years, 1/9 went on to win Best Picture at the Oscars. Won't be mad if BAFTA gives it to Anatomy or Poor Things because Oscars would give it to Oppie anyway.

Btw I saw Poor Things again and it really worked for me on 2nd viewing! And Emma Stone absolutely deserves the Oscar. Such a brilliant performance. I kinda don't get why Lily Gladstone didn't just go for supporting actress. She wasn't in more than half of KOTFM I feel she could've got away with it.

Easily my least favorite in the Best Picture lineup too. It's too unsettling to like or enjoy. I feel like it's a film awards bodies, critics, and Film Twitter likes way more than the general public ever would and will be forgotten by next year.

I get what they were trying to do I guess but I feel like these types of films are fixated on everything but creating something worth watching more than once

5 weeks to go before Oscars night

I've seen the entire Best Picture line up except 'American Fiction' and 'Zone of interest'. What about y'all? :celestial5:

I've seen most of the line up in theaters, except 'Past Lives', 'Holdovers' and 'Maestro' which I've seen online. I have no plan to move my ass to a theater to check the 2 movies I'm missing :coffee2: but 'American Fiction' is hitting digital next week so that's great timing. 'Zone of Interest' has no online date as of now, so it seems it will be the only movie I won't be able to see before Oscar night, and I probably won't even remember to check it out once awards season is over. So it's their loss 🤷 dumb release strategy

Glad someone said it. A perfect BA lineup would have included Lee or Portman, which were FAR bigger snubs than Margot imo
