Watched Poor Things yesterday. What a wild ride it was. Emi Li was indeed exceptional. Overall surprised to see this getting this much awards love and this many Oscar noms - not because it doesn’t deserve it but I would’ve been sure that this is waaaaaay too divisive for the Academy. I mean this was a general talking point for EEAAO but this probably outdid that one’s weirdness ten times over. :skull:

do you all think Emi Li would obviously sweep the awards season without question if she had lost her first one?

I still need to see Poor Things but if she had lost for La La Land then she probably would’ve won for The Favourite.

So she’d still be going for #2 anyway.

this year the oscar voting begins 4 days after the BAFTA ceremony. SAG ceremony is 2 days after begining of oscar voting and the following day the PGA ceremony. 2 days after PGA the oscar voting closes. perched to see the impulse of any visible upsets

How does Oscar voting work? Everyone votes for every category—not just each individual discipline for their respective category?

Noms: people vote for the nominees of their own discipline (actors for actors, directors for directors, ect.) but everyone votes for best picture nominees.

Voting for the winner: Everyone votes for everyone and best picture has some specific ranked-choice voting system

Watched The Zone of Interest

What a performance from Miss Sandra Huller :worship2:

it's more subtle than her AOAF delivery, but the nuances and little details, and her speaking German as the mom are the highlights

The whole film made me feel disturbed and eerie though :mazen:, I need a second viewing to get the jist of it!

i didn't want to say it when nomination day happened because it seemed harsh (and I know people would come for me) but I'm lowkey glad Greta Lee missed the nom because I think Teo Yoo was criminally overlooked during the awards season

she was fantastic in it but I think he was even better. if he doesn't get any love, she shouldn't either. it felt wrong that the korean actor who had just as much screentime in the movie as the american actress was completely shut out

see, this is why the Holdovers, even being a holiday comedy, eats the other popular comedy so-called pop culture event up :deadbanana2:

Blunt kinda eats in the clip but DJR's delivery of post-trauma experience is amazing too

The way Annette Bening is getting barely any buzz this season is very weird. It’s the type of performance that will 100% get her a nom IMO.

finally finished watching Killers of the Flower Moon coz i've got some free time over the weekend and man that was haunting. it was a bit chunky from time to time, especially during the court and radio drama scene.. could have shortened a bit to 3 hours.

Lily ATE that with all those subtle expression of generational trauma and yall had the guts to discredit her for just standing there :deadbanana2:

Yeah that one and the Barbie one were rough. The screenplay in the Barbie clip reads like a reductive version of Madonna's Billboard Woman Of The Year speech

I knew they would use that mess of a Barbie clip.

Foster also messy on that one too.

Blunt delivered what Nolan wanted from his messy portrayal of women in his movies.

But Da'Vine is the best of them all. I would rank Randolph > Sessa > Giamatti.
