Of the ones I’ve seen, it’s Oppenheimer > Past Lives > Barbie > The Holdovers

Oppenheimer was a masterpiece, Past Lives was beautiful, Barbie was fun and fresh, The Holdovers was predictable and boring.

Choosing Barbie when you have a lineup like that is giving Green Book and Crash nightmares

Kinda disapointed that Past Lives didn't get much love, although of course it's a huge win for it to get in Best Picture and Screenplay. I know Celine is a long shot, but I really thought Greta Lee would have enough #1 votes to get in and will be the one to kick Margot instead of Annette. Sigh.

May December was dead after SAG and BAFTA snubs but happy it still got in Screenplay. Natalie, Charles and Julianne deserved so much more for this movie, the best trio this season together with Poor Things and Past Lives.

My (kinda) early predictions which will change after the SAG and BAFTA awards:

Best Picture - Oppenheimer (SPOILER: Poor Things, but both movies deserve the win)

Best Director: Nolan

Best Actor - Paul Giamatti (SHOULD: Murphy)

Best Actress - Emma Stone

Best Supporting Actor - RDJ (SHOULD: Gosling, yes I said it, he's the best thing in Barbie)

Best Supporting Actress - DVJR

I'm so happy Society of the Snow got recognised! Just watched it a few days ago, what a great film!

Locals bitching about Barbie's ~snubs because it's one of the 2 films they've seen this year :bibliahh:'Muh feminisim!' as if there's aren't 2 other movies that also tackled the issues of treatment of women that are thriving with noms because they were, well, better.

Imagine the KII if Emma and Lily split votes, giving way to either Sandra or Carey to win :dies:

I know Carey's probably 4th or 5th but I want this mess to happen, she deserves it, she's the best thing in Maestro! Everybody talks about the other four (which are all AMAZING) but Carey has some weight in her performance too! Could she pull a Marcia Gay Harden?

Could very well happen a la the supposed Glenn/Gaga ending up in Colman's hands, but Carey is unlikely. If BAFTA goes to Hüller, with the added bonus of SAG going to Bening (or Margot as a consolation prize) splitting the race even further, the former might take it.

Could Across the Spider-Verse not getting in Best Original Score mean that The Boy and the Heron may win Best Animated Film? :chick3:

4/5 of best actress nomination are from films about feminism they need to be serious:rip:

Whether you like it or not Barbie is definitely the only film nominated this year that tackles feminism as a social and political movement. Does that mean it's the only feminist film nominated? No, because most films with women as protagonists nowadays occur in a feminist sphere because you know... our struggles still exist.

But let's not forget Killers of a Flower Moon is DiCaprio's character story (which was very much criticized), just like Maestro is Bernstein's story. Anatomy of a Fall arguably feels like the film with the best and most clear feminist message of the ones nominated this year, at least in my opinion. (and without seeing Poor Things, the other film that probably has a very explicit touch on the matter)

Some people are doing the most though, especially those chronically online twitter stans with that Swift song lyrics. :rip:

Screenplay nominees solely by a WOC, for a flm toplined by a WOC - Past Lives

Lead Actress nominees for a WOC, directed by a WOC - Harriet

The Writing nom is historic as it is.

Thus far, the only precedent for the acting nom would be for playing one of the greatest American heroes.

Yalitza is Native-Mexican not Native-American as in the U.S.

Though I guess she would count if we’re talking overall North America but it’s obvious what Lily meant.

I still think Emma will take it though.

The Academy was way too generous giving that movie 8 nominations IMO. If it weren't such a blockbuster hit (thanks to the A+ promo campaign) the girlies would just settle for great production design, beautiful production design etc.

She's an indigenous north american as well since Mexico is located in NA. But yeah, anyway. She would've been anyones obvious choice with maybe 10 minutes more screentime and a chewier scene. The second half of the script is not doing her any favors in this years' race

Just saw Anatomy of a Fall. Sandra Huller ate. This debuts in my top 5 films of the year, and is one of the strongest among the Best Picture nominees.

I STILL DON’T KNOW IF SHE DID IT

Now watch the Zone of Interest and see how she devoured every scene she's in.

At this point, I'm expecting the opposite to happen. Wouldn't be surprised if, in a few months, those anonymous voter interviews reveal that people have been pissed off by all the backlash to the point of giving them nothing. It isn't 2016 any longer. People have lost patience with this kind of emotional blackmail.
