Laura Dern won for *checks notes and spins around* the exact same performance as America (yet she’s praised wonder what’s different) so IMO it’s fair game. And after last year well…. It seems like that’s just what this category is about these days

Barbie isn’t BP frontrunner. Top 5 at best

McNulty Posted January 23 Posted January 23 I'm glad Strange Way of Life didn't get nominated, it was terrible. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar better win and get Wes Anderson his Oscar
truthteller Posted January 23 Posted January 23 (edited) Watched - for me, its Anatomy of a Fall (brilliant acting, brilliant dog, the tension, etc.) > Oppenheimer (brilliant acting, amazing cast, the pacing, etc.) > The Holdovers (it edges out PL for the aesthetic and i hope one day it'll become a holiday classic) > Past Lives (its a cute girl that touches on some human emotions on nostalgia) >>>>> Barbie (it's a pop culture event of the year i guess) for now. To Watch List - American Fiction, Killers of the Flower Moon (i have this bookmarked but the three hours runtime is ), Maestro, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest (these two i'm most excited about ) Edited January 23 by truthteller 1
hausofdave Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Anatomy is a sneaky top3; editing/director/screenplay 1
Almodusa Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Hopefully I can watch everything nominated in all categories this year - I only did it for the 2021 ceremony. BP nominees that I’ve seen: - Barbie - Oppenheimer - Killers of the Flower Moon - The Zone of Interest - Maestro I’ve seen 30 minutes of Past Lives so I’ll have to continue there.
G.U.Y. Gaga Posted January 23 Posted January 23 If I was a songwriter I would be petitioning the academy to understand why Diane is always nominated like you only 4 spaces basically if she releases a song that year
GraceRandolph Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Why are you guys acting like Margot gave some undeniable performance? America got the nom as she deserved. 2
Green Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Is America Ferrera the acting nominee with less precursor awards nominations this year? (I think she only got a Critics Choice Awards nomination) She was snubbed by the Globes, SAG and BAFTA I believe. In the opposite side Morgot Robbie is the only one with SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards nominations to miss the Oscar nomination
Reflektor Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Once I've seen The Zone of Interest next week I think it'll be the first year I've seen every nominated film. Past Lives or secondarily Anatomy of a Fall, would be my dream win but I think the Oppenheimer train is too fast to stop at this point. Very sad Greta Lee was locked out but it was a very strong year, and aside from Nyad, which I haven't seen, I can't really say there isn't anyone in the category who didn't have a strong enough performance to not be there. Rooting for Lily Gladstone (who has two fantastic films on Mubi right now that I highly recommend). I'm not so mad about Margot's snub as her performance was fine but not really groundbreaking. I am SHOCKED to see America Ferrerra when Rosamund Pike or Julianne More were RIGHT THERE! Barbie was very well made, but I just found it so politically inert (much like Oppenheimer which used the cover of biographical authenticity to avoid having a point of view) that it didn't rank highly among films of the year for me -- that being said, Greta Gerwig's creation was so vivid and competent it's insane to me she was locked out of Best Director. Sad Charles Melton was snubbed and while I don't mind Emily Blunt she probably had less than America Ferrera to do and there were such strong supporting performances this year. Haven't seen Rustin as I don't have Netflix, but I'm glad a queer POC performer got nominated for a queer role if Andrew Scott and All of Us Strangers wasn't palatable enough for the Academy. 1

No one was saying she was undeniable. She just appeared everywhere and was pretty much in the consensus 5. Ferrera, not so much (& to add insult to injury, her perf is less deserving than Margot’s).

The bar for Supporting noms isn't as high for lead noms, and Greta didn't give Margot's character enough of an arc for a lead role.

Both are true, especially this year where the 6-7 probable BA nominees were in BP-nominated movies, and BSA was a wide open race. I personally wouldn't have nominated Margot but it is a joke nomming Ferrera but not her.
