Conspiracy theories are easy to believe when you've already been fed extremely negative stereotypes and propaganda about a country.

Wet market theory was even more racist and inflammatory, yet people in mainstream media clung onto it for years.

It's still likely, based off of what we know, that the lab in China conducted gain-of-function research but that it was funded by the US Government and Fauci, who had incentive to cover that up and make certain that we would never know for sure.

"lack of evidence"  yet there is not enough evidence to make any conclusion, and of course the investigation impeded by China didn't yield any useful results. Essentially anyone is validated in believing either side...

Anyone still acting like the lab leak is a crazed conspiracy is part of the problem.

I’m actually confused about this. Wasn’t it confirmed it was by some government agency?

It’s not surprising. It’s what most anti-China Americans wanted to believe since the beginning :michael:

Except, a man-made or lab-leaked virus would have indicators that would prove this theory, but COVID19 had all the hallmarks of a naturally-occurring virus.

This is what decades of anti-China propaganda does to a population. It's not surprising.

This is very reductive of the situation.
1.The vast majority of people assumed it came from the Bats or Wet markets initially
2.After extensive research they that was said unlikely and that the original animal source cannot be found.
3.After initially ridiculing anyone who touched upon lab leak theory, global media suddenly started accepting that it needs to be taken seriously, especially since some of first reported ill were from the lab and there is no identified animal source.
4.The investigation by WHO was considered a sham because China more or less controlled what they could/couldn't see.
5. That has hightened suspicion and the lab being near the origin is virus is a very unfortunate coincidence but hard to ignore.

This is not the result of anti-China propaganda. In fact the way in which it is, is that Trump's anti-china stance & Rhetoric made the topic political from the get go which meant that it become a bipartisan topic before it was a science one. That led to poor reporting and now mistrust amongst the population

The DoE is one of 10+ departments to investigate the source of COVID.

The DoE is the only department, besides the FBI, who settled on a lab leak (their conclusion with low confidence, the FBI with moderate confidence).

The majority of the rest of the departments settled on some confidence of the wet market being the source.

Yes. When nearly ever pandemic over the last century besides one has a had a zoonotic origin, the most likely reasoning here is that this pandemic too has a zoonotic origin.
