HeavyMetalAura Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 I have to admit I was definitely one of those gays who had a hard time letting go of electropop era from 2007-2013. Albums like Circus, The Fame Monster, Loud, etc were what I grew up on and when pop music started to go a more R&B/minimalistic route, it took me a long time to see the genius of it. I think Beyonce's Self-Titled was a real turning point for pop music and helped to herald in the new era of minimalism. When it first came out everyone immediately praised it and I was so disappointed, I only liked the poppier songs like Pretty Hurts and XO (which don't even hold a candle to her other pop hits). Around 2018 - a whole five years later - I finally released how iconic it was and got the hype/recognized the gravity of its impact. Mine, Ghost, Superpower>>> Same thing with Rih's ANTI - with the songs being so short, lack of major pop hooks, and lack of a genre throughline, the album felt like a messy playlist of interludes. It took me a couple years to love it, and it took me even longer to realize that it, too, really helped to change the game. It's not lost on me that of course black women who are celebrated by queer people are still pushing music forward like no one else I barely played Britney's Glory when it first came out (never knew why I didn't like it, it just didn't click), and I rediscovered it over the pandemic and loved it. My mind wasn't ready for Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz when it first came out either, but when she added it on streaming in ahead of Younger Now's release I changed my tune maybe Younger Now being so bad just helped me to appreciate more nnn What are some albums that took a while to click for you?
Kh-Loud Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 (edited) I thought it was the worst album of all time the first time I listened to it; however, now i think it's one of the most captivating albums ever made - literal just her moaning. In certain parts, I still wish she would sound more like she lubes her girlie area a little better. Edited March 8, 2023 by Kh-Loud
allforyou Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 Mariah Carey - Charmbracelet (I initially thought it was one of her weakest albums but after a year it grew on me and is in my top 3 now) Madonna - Erotica (It's not that I disliked it... it just didn't click with me, after like 4 years I started to love it)
Virgos Groove Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 I didn't "get" Lemonade in 2016, but grew to love it with time. It was the album that really broadened my music taste.
theoghon Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 not many share this sentiment but LONERISM got me into more "heavy", "gritty" stuff with unconventional structure and vocals, really broadened my horizons in terms of what I listen to though It took long for me to enjoy it (front to back).
zasderfght Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 thank u, next: Because thank u, next didn't have an upbeat, poppy sound and rather adopted a more hip-hop sound (not that I dislike hip-hop, but I'm a pop stan first), it didn't click with me until more listens. Emotion: Because it's a lengthy record that, while loud, poppy, and fun, really takes its time with songs spanning 4+ minutes, I was a bit bored upon first listen. Now I love it, and I don't mind the length. In fact, I listen to the deluxe edition all the way through-- the one with 19 songs. SOS: I was used to CTRL's sound (and I still absolutely love that album), so it took me some time to really love the new sound/direction SZA went in. Those are the three I can think of off the top of my head.
BlackoutZone Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 The Visitors. The lack of known classic from it made my first listen very prejudiced. I feel like on all the other records I felt that additional spark of joy every time a hit I knew and loved arrived, there was nothing like that on The Visitors. Luckily I revisited the record years later with open mind and realized it’s actually their best album with the title track being their best song ever
ariananext Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 This happens with every Taylor album for me I couldn't get folklore for years, I tried and tried but it wasn't doing anything for me, then all of sudden it clicked last summer and now it's my favourite album ever. It happened with Midnights but it took like a month for it to grow on me.
4Real Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 Anti tbh. I thought it was too all over the place and unfinished in some parts, but now I think that's part of its charm.
blown away Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 The Velvet Rope Body Language Lemonade ANTI Rebel Heart Midnights
dreampop Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 It took me while to get used to this new sounds and the whole hip hop new jack swing 90s sound. I was used to 80s Prince. After a few months I grew to love & accept it!

Frozen99 Posted March 8, 2023 Posted March 8, 2023 (edited) i had finally appreciated billie's debut after HTE, i liked several songs but i listened to it again afterward, open-minded, and it finally clicked 54 minutes ago, BlackoutZone said: The Visitors. It'll come, don't worry. Based on you liking Promises and Obsession I'd suggest to give Red Blooded Woman and I Feel For You another chance. And Slow of course, perhaps watching it performed live helps.
