41. Israel

29. Cuba

I already know far-right ATRL is fuming that their ethno-state's pinkwashing can't outshine commie-provided legal rights. :fan:

I'm the last one to defend my tragic country but it's laughably low given safety's been judged here :rip:

Having places like Japan 40 places lower than the likes of Brazil of all places makes this list a complete an utter joke as far as I'm concerned

The list is completely divorced from the actual concept of travel safety, how can they publish it with a straight face :deadbanana2: You are literally more likely to get hatecrimed as a queer person in any western country than you are in low crime rate East Asian countries.

Having legal rights to things like marriage or adoption is almost completely meaningless in the context of travel safety. Be forreal.

Agreed on all counts. For a future list crosstabs with any hate crimes in addition to the legislation would make the most sense.

i just thought this would be a conversation starter more than anything, despite it's obvious flaws.

It does get to larger conversations about culture vs. law and what takes a while to catch up on either end.

The culture's divorced from the law in so many countries in both directions, good and bad.

I completely disagree.  Psychological discrimination is more prevalent in places like Japan and Korea than in Brazil. Also, while the chance of experiencing high crime rates in Brazil may be higher than in Japan, the likelihood of facing discrimination based on your sexuality is higher in Japan.

Which is the point of this rank :cm:

If this wasn't marketed as a literal safety list I'd agree with you but that's what this is. :skull:

Unpacking this is difficult but interesting points. A short-term danger as opposed to longer-term psychological damage - in the context of a week to month trip abroad for an LGBTQ traveler - is where I'd think the former would take precedent.

If you're an LGBT citizen of Japan then yes I absolutely agree, but we're talking travel here. Everything you do as a queer person will just get lumped in with 'foreigner', especially if you're of non-East Asian descent. It's probably among the safest and easiest places to travel as a queer person or queer couple, as is Korea.

Going and living there? completely different story. But that's not how this list is portrayed.

Ms Paraguay being a hole in South America :skull:

India and China's glaring contrast, how India entered so much faster into the century :clap3:

The clear divide between South Africa and the rest of Africa OOoopfff

I think the map overall is somewhat correct with a couple of shades of innacuracy within countries, what with how progressive metro cities are compared to rural areas are in pretty much everywhere. I think it should boil down to same sex marriage and legal protections as absolute minimums.

On paper doesn’t reflect the reality on the ground like UAE and Malaysia are generally very safe for travellers even though they rank low.

197. United Arab Emirates
The OF/Instagram gays sure love going here!

Honestly, how safe is South Africa? I have not been there, but #16?

My country is in the top 90, and only because of the decriminalization of men having sex with other men last year. It would have been outside of the top 100 if not for that. Which is sad, because you would most likely not be harassed even if you hold hands with your same-sex partner.

And like others said, your skin color will unfortunately also make a difference in whether you can harassed or not.

Screaming that a certain Communist militant-LGBT-activist ATRLer’s favourite countries are all shaded DARK PURPLE or BLACK. What’s up with that?

Quoting them together in case @Icarus didn't check the thread again :gaycat2:

Anyway happy to see countries that socialists look up to for an ideal system of government are #2, #5, and #8 on the list :heart2:

Since you haven't been to South Africa and didn't provide any examples as to why its ranking might be too high, what makes you think it shouldn't be #16? :gaycat2:

Kindly do share :gaycat2:

Well my BF and I are going to be 'good friends' when we visit Egypt, Jordan and Turkey next month :gaycat1:

My country is smashing at #27, we luv 2 c it :clap3:

Canada is number 1 and not Spain? Seriously, the number 1 country should definitely be European, if not Spain, then at least the Netherlands, which would still be unfair to Spain... but not any North America country at least, those places are full of conservatives who have no problem  spreading hate…

That's my only problem, as for the worst countries, I don't care about their positions, they're all trash anyway.

Sweden being the runner up, no surprise there :clap3: we gays run the show here

Really thought Iceland would be higher. Idk how the UK snuck into the top 10 over her :deadbanana4:

I was HOWLING at my African and Caribbean countries being in the bottom 100, ironic but the economic situations are blamed on the devil aka gays.

Truly, this world has a lot of development to do still, countries steeped in religion and high crime(which is committed laregly by straight men) getting to blame us innocent gays is honestly revolting.

I fear for my safety with straight men around running rampant especially with their statistics, what should I tell my child when they ask? :dancehall:
