It’s strange that this happened in a pretty big, industrialized city that’s considered one of the more developed areas in Mexico

“Hostile”? The gaslighting and lack of self-awareness. :skull:

I've spent months at a time in Mexico lol. Harsh truths hurt. It's not a first world country.

Acting like the entire country is unsafe outside of resort towns and CDMX is the “harsh truth?” :bibliahh:

It doesn’t matter how long you’ve spent in Mexico. You clearly know nothing about it.

Honest Q, why is Mexico, Northern Mexico in particular, currently a cesspool for these violent demonic cartels? :deadbanana4:

Almost all of the documentaries I’ve watched has always pointed this region as a dangerous cartel haven, aka the setting for some of dark web’s most disturbing videos :rip:

This is awful. Makes me want to do some research on the role of the cartel in Mexico. My understanding is that they basically control or function as the government, at least in certain regions

The Mexican government (and former colonial governments) have been situated over 7,000ft above sea level in a valley (Mexican Plateau) surrounded by mountains in every direction.  It's the only major fertile temperate area of the country and thus extending federal control downwards 7000ft via roads and infrastructure was nearly impossible until the later half of the 1900's thanks to industrialization and technology.  To this day, the government still cannot properly control the further north and south regions of the country well due to the geographical difficulties and decades of corruption that has been allowed to fester.  The Mexican Plateau is really the only area of the country that has been able to develop relatively fine due to government control, and is also why major cities in the central valley area are safe first world global cities with immense investment and money whereas most other cities outside the valley are underdeveloped and more ripe for corruption/cartels.  To make matters worse, the black market trade between the US and Mexico has always made the border region important and dangerous, while the Southern borders are constantly inundated with immigrants from Central and South America trying to make it north to the US.

usually they never target tourists cause its very bad rep for tourism so idk why they would do something like this

i really hope they didnt suffer horrible deaths cause cartel kidnappings usually result in horrifying, slow, tortorous detahs

Seriously, some of the cartel related murders I’ve read about have been absolutely brutal.

OP UPDATE #1:

Turns out the search was cosmetic, but the earlier argument about Americans seeking out cheaper medicine in more dangerous border towns is valid.

OP UPDATE #2:

I’ll change this if we hear something different or I get a better source (:doc:), but in the meantime, this urban-marketed blog appears to have the exclusive on the victims ID’d :coffee2:

Never help from this man, more noise :ace:

Is there confirmation that they were killed? All the twitter posts seem to just say "kidnapped".

@Kamil24 Updating the OP now. The original source that posted the video that started all of this that Vice News quoted implied they’d all died which I was going off of, but now we have confirmation by official sources that at least 2 are alive.

How awful for them and their families. Tragedy

The original source that ID’d the victims gave more specific info, updating the OP again.

Finally finished updating the OP :deadbanana:

Will see if there’ll be any retribution against the Gulf Cartel regarding their specific deaths but I doubt it.

I gave up for any Mexicans or Americans in the drug war after the Iguala mass kidnapping. :coffee2:

Damn I live right on the texas/Mexico border. It’s not really that bad but just depends. Always check before you go. So sad.

These titles are giving me whiplash honestly. Maybe just put “situation unknown” cause going from 4 kidnapped to 3 dead to 4 dead to 2 dead is not a good look. All in less than 24 hours

Not them having the entire country labelled as unsafe but different levels of unsafe :rip: Amerikkka really hates Mexico huh

I've been to both and know people who live there and they are still eons less safe than most places in Europe. All of Latin America has a problem with crime.

I agree. That's why I don't live in the US, I live in Canada (British Columbia to be exact). I have zero desire to spend any time in America for precisely that reason. It's a very violent country with some of the most dangerous cities on Earth. Even a place like New York, I can get the same level of sophistication and culture in London without any of the safety issues. Central London is super safe, unlike Manhattan these days. I hate America, no offense.

Girl, London reported 11,122 stabbings last year alone :rip: just because it doesn’t have a widespread gun issue like the US (or NY in your example specifically), doesn’t mean it’s more “safe”

It honestly comes down to the sourcing - they were all kidnapped at first which they were all saying but the original source Vice News was using went ahead to imply they'd all died which was corrected by the other bigger sources later. That's how these things work with these kinds of stories so I can't apologize for the whiplash, but everything's set in stone at this point.

Is Mexico not safe too travel?

It is safe. It depends on where you go.

I've lived my entire life in Mexico (Monterrey specifically) and traveled around the whole country and I've never had a bad experience with cartels or any kind of violence in general.

It is sad to read about this news, but people can't generalize the entire country for this kind of situations.

I remember that 3 or 4 years ago there was a shooting at a Walmart in El Paso Texas and half of the people death was Mexican citizens. Let's not pretend that tragedies like this doesn't occured across the border as well.
