ArtForFreedom Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Yes and No. It's true Madonna debuted 8 years before Mariah. However, They have released close to the same amount of albums
UseYourIllusion2002 Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 It's weird because Madonna's debut single was released in '82 while Mariah's was in '90. But I think the fact that Madonna was still smashing like a new artist in 1990, and was still one of the biggest celebrities through the entire 90s, and both were seen as legends in the 00s makes people group them together. Also, them both making a "comeback" in 2005 probably contributes to this, along with the fact that they are like the top two selling female artist of all time.
John Slayne Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 no, Mariah is 10 years younger and debuted when Madonna was already on her first greatest hits album
Intuition Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Of course not. Madonna was already known as the "Queen of Pop" and on another level when Mariah debuted in 1990. They are not even part of the same generation (Madonna's a boomer and Mariah is Gen X) or even musically comparable.

I wasn’t even alive by the time both Madonna and Mariah peaked. They are all oldies in younger generation’s eyes. Just cope

No one cares if you were alive, it's a fact that Mariah's prime was closer to the streaming era and more of her audience are on streaming services than Madonna's audience. Either way Madonna has like a 60M CSPC lead over Mariah, enjoy that minor streaming gap fueled by dance challenges with Kim Kardashian while Madonna embarks on her 10th (?) tour that's about to outgross Mariah's entire career combined

I absolutely love to see it

banterfly Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Not peers at all. But I think it's flattering that a pop-r&b vocalist with a smaller audience is being compared to a creative, visual pop entertainer. They are not peers based on time period nor are they peers in music genres. The only thing they have in common are the fact that they are both MC and from New York and have very aggressive fanbases.

This is definitely why Madonna and Whitney are considered Mariah's peers by many, they were already 8 and 5 years respectively into their careers by the time Mariah debuted yet they were still very relevant and massively successful (with Whitney peaking in 1992-1993 and Madonna had already earned the Queen of Pop title). The same can be said about Janet.

This is despite the fact that pop and dance pop are the top 1 and 2 most followed genres in Spotify, while r&b is 10th (1/4th the audience of pop music).
GlamSlam Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 What's this talk/lies about MadonnaNation claiming they're peers? Do they mean that one forum (consisting or about 30 active members) or her fanbase as a whole? Because, I can't recall anyone ever saying that. So Mariah's finally doing well on streaming....good for her. How's she doing re touring?

Madonna is a touring force after all so "entertainer" seemed a better word than "singer/dancer/songwriter". One other thing they have in common is they are both book authors, so I guess in that sense, they can be peers.
#Beautiful Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 mariah is a forgotten loser and madonna is a beloved and respected legend whose tour will definitely not be a trainwreck, just ask any of the regulars in this thread

Look at her stats. Mariah is local and hitless. Forever, a flop. Mariah's peer is that Kermit singer - maybe.
chaklux Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 They are not peers strictly speaking but it still make sense to compare them. They are both legends who are currently legacy acts. People compare legends of different eras life MJ vs Elvis Or vs The beatles. Irrespective of the eras, legacy acts are kinda done and I feel their careers can still be compared
