The real issue is that, historically, there have been more white actors. This will change over time as representation continues to expand (which is the other issue). But plenty of POC actors, queer and non-queer have played gay roles and then continued to work in straight roles. Hopefully this number increases in time, but there are so many bigger problems out there Yeah, to me the bigger problem is that why are 99% of gay roles played by straight people? And yes, I know it's acting. But it doesn't feel like real representation.

But basically every single young male actor seems to be doing a gay role or two these days. If this is a way for someone to explore their sexuality/romantic attractions then that's fine. And I am happy that gay roles are so common now that it feels normal. But I wish it wasn't just a role so often.

I know many people have a problem with straight actors playing gay roles and I have two issues with that. 1) Not every actor is out and therefore it is unfair to say this. There are plenty of closeted actors. Gay actors should be able to play straight roles. 2) I only think a gay actor should play a gay role if the character is based on a real person, such as a biopic. The actor should be as close to the real person as possible, this includes race/ethnicity/gender, etc. Again, not everyone is ever going to agree on this topic, but there are bigger problems in the world than straight actors playing gay roles IMO.

You can say that about every single thing in the world, that there's always bigger issues, but that doesn't make this one irrelevant. I just think real representation is so important. That's what's made Heartstopper so successful, that the writer/creator made a point out of having that actors match their character's sexual orientation and gender identity. And yes, ofc gay actors should be able to play straight roles, but that is very rare. But straight actors playing gay roles is very common. And that's the problem for me. It should not be that difficult to find openly gay actors from Hollywood for the roles in 2023. But the casting agents want guys who look straight, so ofc most of those fit for the roles are either straight or at least straight passing.

Wow at Benedict Cumberbatch being nominated for twice as many gay roles as every gay actor combined.
