slw84 Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 After Miley gave us The Climb, Party in the USA, We can't stop, Wrecking ball...and adore you high key the universe is really giving Miley their flowers Miley is really setting herself up for a future VMA Vanguard, a few legacy act awards later this decade if she keeps the trajectory going. She's already an icon of that era so the rest is just icing

But if it has the longevity of SOY (and not an Adele Hello type of run), then it's very possible Since you are mentionning the ''biggest hit of the century'', I thought about using Despacito, Uptown Funk or Old Town Road in my OP because those are songs that could rival Shape Of You if I'm not mistaken. But the reason I picked SOY, is because just like Flowers, it was an instant smash hit. Not a sleeper hit. Debuted at #1, big streaming numbers, etc... That's the most accurate example I could find. When I saw Flowers breaking the record for the 500M streams milestone, I thought about Shape Of You's commercial performance 6 years ago. That song constantly broke records back in 2017. In every metric possible. You couldn't escape it unfortunately. That's why I asked if the former was in the latter's league success wise. Also, there is the coincidental fact that both songs were released right shortly after the new year. Maybe it's a prophecy happening in front of our eyes lol. Frankly, I think I understand your overall point. You're telling me that Flower's longevity is the metric we'll need to observe in order to assess whether it's a Shape Of You sized hit or not. I can't wait to see how it does after it eventually gets knocked out off the #1 spot. Although, what do you mean by ''Hello type of run'' ? Do you think Hello was frontloaded (big peak then freefall) ?

Do you think Hello was frontloaded (big peak then freefall) ? Despacito was huge but SOY was bigger (Despacito was basically #2 on every 2017 year end chart behind "Shape of You" which outranked it for both 2017 and 2018 year-end charts). Uptown Funk was huge but there were select markets like Austria, Germany Switzerland where it wasn't a #1 smash. Old Town Road was also huge but not like SOY which was basically #1 on every year-end chart. But I agree - if Flowers has the longevity of SOY, it could definitely get there. It's too soon to say - Shape of You was still charting in the top 20 in most markets over a year later lol. Hello was massive and broke many records- but after it's peak it didn't have the longevity that other smashes like Shape of You did where it lingered in the #10-20 positions for months. I wouldn't say frontloaded but after it's peak, it didn't have the super longevity of other hits. Not in a bad way - those first 6 weeks at #1 would've made it a top 10 year end hit in any market basically and it still demolished the charts worldwide. Edited February 21, 2023 by naval23
