Have you ever moderated a forum or a big discord server before?

If so, how was it?

While I am not very active on discord, I was offered a modding thing by other mods for a fairly big server - but the "senior" mod - a 45 year old #AllLivesMatter centrist woman who I get into discussions/arguments with - vetoed it because I'm ""extreme left-wing"" ( :deadbanana:?) and tbh I'm kinda pressed about it. There were right-leaning mods before and the HAG had zero problem co-existing with them. I don't even think I would have accepted it but being turned down for /this/ paranoid woman is rubbing me the wrong way...

Anyway, I was given these receipts by other mods (of her saying such) and they said discord modding is a lot more of a nuisance than forums, and I only have very basic experience with the latter (that was more of a comments section moderation on a site).

What have your experiences been, if any? Did I dodge a bullet?

Posted

Yes you did dodge a bullet I fear. "Centrist" in most cases is just closet right wingers.

I was a mod on a forum when i was 7 years old :thing:

Being a moderator is an infamously lowlife nolife position.

People with nothing special going on in their lives spend all of their days in front of a computer, because in their little digital community they can finally feel as if they contribute in the world, as if they have authority.

Truth is, you are being exploited by whoever owns the server/site while also you are embarrassing yourself doing that.

I would never apply to become a moderator. Cringe.

It ruins the experience IMO.

Some reality show subreddit once offered to make me a mod after most of the mods got removed for trying to delete the subreddit. I declined because it was too much work. :skull:

A few times, the biggest one had like 500k users. But it was boring, nothing interesting. It was a teen forum btw, and surprisingly it was not messy at all.

No. It'd be miserable

Yes I moderate a subreddit with 700k+ members (very active) and a discord server too with around 800 members

Posted

I actually did and had to quit because I couldn't believe how serious the admin took the forum. Like, it's a goddamn site and we make no money off it, why would I act as if it was my full-time job? Lol

I was a Habbo moderator for a while. Got a lot of people gasping when I walked into a room :WAP:

Arent most mods on a power trip?

Never cared about moderation so it's a no:giraffe:

I only am in 2 Discord servers and I barely post. Are there any interesting and very active Discord servers?

I used to be one of the admins of a discord with around 20,000 users. The point of the server was focusing on the PvP/competitive part of a video game and the amount of fights daily that would transpire in there since there was no fear of getting your actual game account banned. Almost every slur in the English lanuage, people threatening to physically assault others, doxxing. :rip: All over losing 1 match in a video game. :rip:

Sucked the passion out of me for the game in general having to deal with them constantly. I would say you dodged a bullet since it's mentally draining if the community will have "drama" or fights often and since you mentioned political stances I'm gonna assume this is gonna be the case.

I'm not gonna lie though I used to close my eyes when my friends were the ones fighting. :ahh:

I used to moderate forums back when I was a teenager up until I was probably 25. The biggest was a really popular gaming forum that I was a moderator for for about 10 years total. It was fun, but as I was growing older, I realized the things going on in the forum that required extensive discussions were no longer part of what I considered to be at all important in any way, shape, or form; the internal forum politics that come with managing it (I loved those when I started). When it came to moderating, I never saw things as a big deal. I'd give warnings and infractions, but only really banned bots. I would not moderate a forum ever again, though.

Yes, I’ve been a moderator of two sub forums on a really big forum and got really burnt out. I… ended up just dropping going on the forum since it took so much of my time. I feel really bad and haven’t gone back to it since. :'(

Yes, I am a moderator for a 900+ member discord server with moderate activity. It does get stressful at times but I am lucky that the owner of that server understands my situation on when I can or cannot help with stuff that needs moderating.

it takes a kind of Karen insecurity yes. Like a certain brand of prissy gay school teacher who want to fit the mould of all things square in the workplace as they personal life is a cesspit of desperate insecurities :coffee: what they lack irl they make up for with they Twitter politician 'personality' :giraffe:

No, tbh it takes all my energy just to live my own life. I can't be bothered dealing with other people's drama.
