PillowCase Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 https://time.com/6255448/teen-girls-mental-health-epidemic-causes/ Nearly one in three high school girls considered suicide in 2021, a 60% increase since 2011. Teen depression doubled between 2010 and 2019. Emergency-room admissions for self-harm among 10- to 14-year-old girls tripled between 2009 and 2015. What was the cause? Social media. Not only is it considerably less fulfilling than seeing friends in person but comes with numerous risks including sexual exploitation, body image issues, and cyberbullying, all of which girls experience more. When you examine girls and social media use, there’s a considerable link to depression. Parents, tell your kids they can’t have social media until they are 16 – or at all!
GentleEarthquake Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 This is a pandemic sis, it's happening to everyone but I do believe teen girls are the most affected.
Dr. Alexander Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 As soon as you delete social media, the majority of the problems will go away. It’s not that hard.

Miley Cyrus Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 Miley is doing something about it. She released Flowers.
RoseGold Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 I mean yeah, life is pretty bleak. I'm happy I had my teen years when I did even though they sucked. It can't be easy for them.
Ash12345 Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 (edited) Yeah, technology has definitely had its downsides. First it was the teen boys that were playing video games instead of doing homework and playing sports and now it's teen girls seeking validation on social media and getting depressed when it doesn't fulfil them like they hope it will. Flanders Posted February 18, 2023 Posted February 18, 2023 Male suicide rates are far higher than females in all age groups.. so why are girls being singled out?
Ash12345 Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 1 hour ago, Flanders said: Male suicide rates are far higher than females in all age groups.. so why are girls being singled out? Males are more violent, so they're more likely to attempt suicide in a way that will "succeed". Females are more likely to attempt suicide. Suicide rates have historically been higher for late middle aged men (age 45-65), however, suicide rates for teens and young adults have been increasing. 25-34 is now the demographic with the highest rates (it used to be 5th out of 6 age categories). The gap between 15-24 year olds and older demographics has also been closing.
UnusualBoy Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 I mean what can we do? This is all their parents fault for putting boundaries nor attention into what’s going on in their kids lives…

It's literally pointed out one post above yours that such a statistic is only accurate if you consider "suicide rates" to mean "successful attempts" to purposefully erase that women suffer from suicidal ideation more often and attempt suicide at higher rates.

Yes, that post was my post. The fact that women attempt suicide more often is also a bad thing because it suggests they have more mental health struggles. The fact that men are more likely to die from suicide is still a bad thing for men, because you can't come back from dying, unlike the women who "fail" to kill themselves who at least get a second chance. It's not factually wrong to say males have higher suicide rates (since that generally refers to death rates), but yes, I agree that we shouldn't use that to diminish the mental health struggles of women.
Blue Jeans Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 There is an overload of information that’s detrimental to mental health. A lot of expectations on how to look, act, succeed from social media. Plus Tiktok videos are terrible for attention span. Humans were not designed for this, and these huge lifestyle changes are extremely new on the human timescale. I feel like a boomer saying this, but teenagers have addiction to smartphones and social media. It’s not healthy

I think there are other factors outside of social media, although that is definitely a factor, but social media is an integral part of socialization nowadays. You can't really put the genie back in the bottle.
RunUpDoneUp Posted February 19, 2023 Posted February 19, 2023 Huh? Why would you blame a medium instead of the operators of said medium? Do we blame cars or the drivers? Planes or the pilots? Guns or gun owners? We did nothing when women were going through this and they were the revered "stay at home" mom, meanwhile they were drugging themselves to simply function day to day. Feminism's impact is grossly overstated, we merely made a dent in the landslide through women's suffrage. People are more concerned with carrying out their chosen bigotry(currently it's transphobia) and will pay attention to that, no one who ever cared about women's plight has ever pointed at the lgbt community, when the culprit has been the same as it was from the dawn of civilization; patriarchal norms and knowhow.

Mr.Link Posted February 20, 2023 Posted February 20, 2023 Well newsflash: everybody is in a mental health epidemic, and this is not gaslighting it’s a true crisis.
Ash12345 Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 Anyways, I know a girl who attempted suicide and I would say the way her parents broken marriage went down was part of it. I am not saying two people should stay together if they are dysfunctional and abusive towards each other since that is just another form of broken marriage but it is important to be mindful of how it's impacting your children. In this case her dad left her sick mother to be with another woman and her new stepmom was acting jealous and territorial for her father's affection and her father was basically acting like he was picking the new woman over her. It's not hard to see how that would have negatively impacted her psyche especially considering she was a teenager and teenage girls are particularly vulnerable to insecurity and self worth issues regardless of the environment.
AvadaKedavra Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 Social Networks really turned into something real toxic. The pandemic and all the horrible things have turned the world into something dystopic in the last years Sending hugs to all the girls and people goin through horrible moments. We really need some sort of offiline revolution and to find a way to create support-friendship groups for people. Its also time to stop glamorizing politicians from both sides from the spectrum and fight against them and their opression
J Legend X Posted February 21, 2023 Posted February 21, 2023 I feel like social media has a big impact on this tbh...
