Saintlor Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 (edited) I'm making this thread as a girl (but I am a huge ally) and it makes me so uncomfortable to see this Homophobia is so rampant on TikTok I see many straight girls commenting "💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻" and "is he....💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻?" underneath guys videos ALL the time It was recently a huge trend on TikTok for straight girls to make videos saying: "I think all men are secretly gay and hate women. They want to have sex with women, but they don't treat them how they treat their male friends / they would rather spend time with male friends than women" So many girls are on TikTok saying their gay best friends sleep with straight men with girlfriends all the time "girls watch out, its disgusting". I'm pretty sure they're lying about how frequently this happens and are just wanting to spread homophobia. Even if it is true, is it really more disgusting if someone cheats with a man than a woman? One of the most popular sounds right now on TikTok is 'denial is a river in egypt, your husband is GAY' The list goes on with how much homophobia is on the app. Although people might say people are joking, a lot of their 'jokes' insinuate that gay people are beneath straight people. It's also insinuating that being gay is something dirty/gross and that it's wrong to not act stereotypically straight. Back in 2015, I frequently read many gay men say homophobia will die out when the boomer generation does and that they're stuck in the past. In 2023, I think the younger generation are just as bad, if not worse. TL;DR: It feels like the 00s decade when casual homophobia and that's so gay was very prominent with straight girls *using the word casual loosely as I think all homophobia is just plain homophobia Edited February 17, 2023 by Saintlor
Doogle Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Yeah I have noticed this and it worries me. It’s like homosexuality became accepted online, then in-jokes about sexuality grew, were appropriated by the wrong crowd. In turn, they ended up using and internalising these stereotypes and using jokes at the expense of gay men. They don’t even realise they’re being homophobic we took steps forward forward only to end up going back. I’ve had this happen with friends recently although they’re older (millennial age). Kept making jokes about my boyfriend and I at our expense implying we’re pervs or after threesomes with any guy we meet. Cut those ******* off… and the worst part is one of them is an LGBT woman
RussianRoulette Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 No I don't think that, there are many young female readers of M/M romances and fans of gay films. But there are many misogynist and homophobic young men that are gamers. I can't tell you how many times if someone fucks up in a game they say "you play worst than a girl, you play like a f*g"
Selegend Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 I dont know if i agree. I think Gen Z have way more freedom with their sexuality and that makes them think they can joke all the time.
D.Va Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 It's literally not the same kind of homophobia. This one is rooted in internet humor while ten years ago it was more violent. I would much rather have to go thru a bunch of "denial is a river in Egypt" and "is he... yk ?" than being called a f slur.
Trent W Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 From Gen Z I’ve only seen incel males from 3rd world muslim countries being homophobic. The ones that follow Andrew tate too, but not that much. I see a lot of backlash on non-binary people from all generations, even gays all the time. The pronoun stuff gets commonly made fun all the time. But that’s not directly homophobic.

I still don’t think it’s okay that it seems everyone is implying that there’s something wrong with being gay Especially with straight girls finding it a sport to try and out people by posting 💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻
Saintlor Posted February 17, 2023 Author Posted February 17, 2023 Just now, Rotunda said: That’s just your own ignorance of how things used to be lol Poor phrasing sorry, I did know it was bad then and now. I meant to highlight how others said homophobia will die out when the older generation die out (I knew it wouldn’t but I phrased my post badly)
Pheromosa Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Gen Z just doesn’t care. Whether they mean what they say is another thing but they are not afraid to go there with their humor
Solaria Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Gen Z is way more nasty towards trans people then they are towards gay people
Aren Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Gays themselves allowed it by downplaying homophobia and making homophobic jokes to each other on Twitter like ‘it’s inevitable to be homophobic’. Suddenly all the straight girls felt comfortable using homophobia as ‘humor’ and the gays didn’t check them. Gay men also get a lot of hate from the rest of the LGBT community for some reason, so it’s like it’s ‘ok’ to hate gay men, but not other members of the community.
Peroxide Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 I'd say Gen Z is probably the least homophobic generation in modern history... they have millennials to thank for laying the groundwork there. Sure, the incels and the gamers are there... but they don't make up the majority. However, transphobia is MUCH more of an issue right now.
anti-bitch Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 @Saintlor Idk if it's homophobia, or just some girls being toxic. Like, if a guy doesn't like them, he must be gay. And the "denial is a river..." is mostly said by gays themselves as a joke. And actually some girls get offended if they are attracted to a guy but turns out he's gay. So this idea of girls and gays getting along well is not always true. But I think the boys in Gen Z are a lot more chill than ever before. Not everyone ofc, but still. It's great to see.
ninasayers Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Yeah, there's a ton of thinly veiled homophobia displayed as "jokes". It's obviously not nearly as bad as it used to be, that would be insane to imply, but to pretend that there's none is dumb.

Roman Holiday Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 (edited) Homophobia will always exist, just like racism. I roll my eyes at millennials who act like Gen Z are supposed to be wiser and more tolerant. Like, at the end of the day they're teenagers, how advanced are they supposed to be? And just like with millennials and generations before them, they will become more conservative over time. Anyways, "Ironic homophobia" is the new homophobia. Maybe less aggressive, but definitely still plays on stereotypes. Online gays encourage and perpetuate it, so women and straight boys feel comfortable joining in usually. I'm no saint, because I love calling guys **** over the simplest things. Its funny Edited February 17, 2023 by Roman Holiday

But when over half of Republicans even support gay marriage at this point, something has definitely changed in society. Today's conservatives are not the same as 100 years ago, or even 50. They just come behind liberals, but they will come around. And they will switch their stance on trans people as well. It's just gonna take time.

I guess what I mean is, most civilized people probably aren't racist or homophobic, but to an extent I think everyone holds their own biases.

I literally can't imagine a "good" reason for it other than people having read it from a book. That's the bias. And that's why I don't think gay rights and religious freedom can co-exist. But the world isn't ready for the conversation. At least not the US.
Superbitch Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 Gen z is very interesting because they can be super progressive and at the same time while trying to be super progressive they end up being a bit conservative being offended by everything. When it comes to homophobia I don’t agree. They’re more acceptable and normal towards lgbt+. It’s only a group of young incels that follow people like that bald guy that are like this.

True. It's obviously gotten so much better to be lgbt and will most likely continue to do so but from what I've noticed, find any young lgbt person on twitter, tumblr, tik tok, etc. and you'll find a post or tweet hating on gay men and see people get a straight up pass for them to throw around the *** and nobody seems to care and it's like anyone who labels themselves queer now thinks they automatically get a pass for it too. It's one thing for gay men to call each other f*gs and joke around but I don't think that gives the right of the rest of the community to do it, especially in a hateful way. So it's no surprise at all when other people outside the community see it and think it's okay if they do it too. And other gay men just encourage it making jokes along with it so it's not going to really stop. If we're not being respectful with each other inside the community, nobody outside of it is going to be either. All it will do is cause tension and rifts so here's to hoping stuff like this dies down and everyone can try to be cool with each other moving forward.
