I think her issues more than anything stem from never really cultivating a core audience (musically). She did everything to raise her profile as a celebrity and kinda smartly set herself up for life. But at the ironic expense of the music career that was meant to be her main..."thing".

 

Her success always felt contingent on her songs being spammed by UK radio, dating headlines, aligning releases with her judging gigs, and being more of a general Pop jukebox than an artist with a distinctive sound, image, or musical perspective. 

 

I'm not even hating, because there is literally space for everyone and for every "artiste" there needs to a fun Pop gal like Rita. The only issue is that when any of those components disappear, the fall-out tends to be almost instant. And there's no foundation to land safely on because no time or real effort was put into cultivating one. 

 

I'm also not convinced this indie route is for everyone. The real testament will be her album sales/performance (which may be her redeeming angle as an older artist now). But someone like Rita benefits from the muscle of the machine and in this streaming climate would NEED the type of pull a major label has to land her on streaming playlists etc if she wants to seriously compete in today's market.
