hallucinate Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 (edited) There is just so much stuff happening in Turkey that is not getting translated and being spread around the world Erdogan and his government completely butchered this situation with their words + actions and instead of fixing they are trying to save face and threaten people Edited February 10, 2023 by hallucinate

Chile had an 8.8 earthquake in 2010 (6th strongest of all time) and only one high rise (15 stories high) building collapsed. In total 500 people died (a lot of them because of the tsunami that was caused by the earthquake). I know it might be too soon to have this discussion but this level of mortality can be avoided with stricter building codes. The fact that this earthquake wasn't even 8.0 on the scale and we're looking at dozens of thousands or maybe even hundreds of thousands of deaths is not something that we can say it's expected in a country that is already prone to earthquakes.
hallucinate Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 (edited) Quote Following the 1999 quake, homeowners have been paying what’s called essentially an earthquake tax since the early 2000s — [a fund to essentially have some money on the side to take the edge off the worst when it comes]. That was made permanent, and everybody pays that every year. Today, that money should have amassed to somewhere in the tens of billionsof US dollars. And people are saying, “Well, where the hell is that money?” Erdogan was actually asked this in 2020. And he basically says: That money was spent where it needed to be spent. don’t feel the need to explain myself to anybody any further. source also him using these poor kids who were victims of earthquake to look more sympathetic Edited February 10, 2023 by hallucinate

A similar earthquake is expected in Istanbul. I have been aware of this since I was a kid. I remember being 3 years old and sleeping outside because of a 7.4 earthquake back in 1999. And nothing has changed since then. 16+ million live in Istanbul and many buildings won't stand a chance.
Vermillion Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Erdogan's corruption regarding the lost earthquake tax money is bar none the biggest story in the world right now. And yet the coverage it deserves isn't there. Regardless of theories as to why, including who it's affected, it's all gross. It's all so unrelentingly sad.

It's an extremely slow process when thousands of buildings are already built, but it can be done. Chile started this process back in 1930 and that decision is saving lives as we speak nearly 100 years later. If you guys do nothing, everytime you have an earthquake you will be in the same exact position you are in right now, for many decades to come. I live in Chile and I am already very scared of earthquakes since it's the most seismic country on earth after Japan and Indonesia, but if Chile had poor infrastructure I would be scared sh..less all the time. Japan is the same, they don't live in fear cause they know most buildings will survive an earthquake that is less than 9.0 on the scale.

That is the most frustrating part because Erdogan has been here since 2002, to think we could have been done with this process by now Earthquakes have always terrified me but the things we've witnessed over the past 4 days ... suffice to say, we can't sleep anymore. You guys need to trial anyone that supervised the process of construction of any building that didn't adhere to the codes. Here in Chile we have a strong earthquake (8.0 or more) every 10 years so if you don't follow the code, you will be jailed in less than 10 years and your company might be closed or at the very least severely fined. That puts the pressure on the construction companies to build properly, regardless of the government's controls at the time you are building.

These construction compainies in here are strong friends of the Erdogan, so they think they will get away with their actions. Having a house is a lifetime dream of most poor Turkish people, they dont care about the quality. Sometimes they build their homes themselves without the local governments' permissions. Those vuildings are supposed to be destroyed but before every elections, Erdogan's party let announces an amnesty for them just to get the votes. In 2018, they let 7M buildings to stay that way. It is just way too political. People choose to not say a word to Erdogan and his actions just because of their hate and fear of the opposites. When there is this strong hatred of two different sides of the country, and most people are culturally on Erdogan's side (conversatives), he almost always gets free pass for every awful thing he does. It's god's destinity, that's why people have died they say, not Erdogan's fault. Edited February 10, 2023 by Afferty

Luckitty Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 why do people only care about turkey and not about syria who are having it much worse? rip
genio Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 If you guys could donate even the tiniest bit of money, turkish/syrian people in the earthquake region would be more than grateful. Even $5 can make a difference and save someone's life. Try to check out your local red cross websites for more and reliable ways of donating money to those in need. I'm always sceptical when donating to organizations, but red cross has to be the most reliable global organization that actually transfers most of the money to those in crisis (there's always a small percentage that gets used for company expenses, but red cross probably has a really low amount).

I guess that's why the media focuses more on Turkey. The latter is obviously wrong on many levels, but that's how our society still works sadly. (Another reason is that Turkey has more video footage of the crisis/situation). Needless to say, obviously both countries now need ALL of the support they can get and there shouldn't be made a difference. Edited February 11, 2023 by genio
