A Dutch researcher named Frank Hoogerbeets, predicted this 4 days ago.

And of course, no one listened and his tweet only went viral after the disaster.

He also pushes anti climate changes rhetoric on his page and posts daily predictions of areas suspect to have a earthquake. He's not all there.

The man did important research regardless of what he thinks about climate change, there were times when einstein was wrong, but that won't make him any less important in history. Unfortunately his tweet didn't go viral at least this time, that would have saved a lot.

I could be entirely wrong, but I never saw someone predicting with complete accuracy earthquakes. His data is litterally planets moving in the universe, when we know that this is not how earthquakes occur.

In fact, I just googled it, and the scientific consensus is that there is no way of predicting an earthquake. Like any consensus, this could be subject to change for so far it hasn't. Thus, this person was just "lucky".

This is litterally the equivalent of someone writing the horoscope of a person and nailing it. That's what it is.

Everyone knew that there will be an earthquake at this region sooner or later, his tweet means nothing. It's not lile he said do not sleep at your homes for 15 days or something.

I wont be surprised if 100k+ people dies tbh. Half of the cities are destroyed and too little people are saved as of now. Majority are still laying under the ruins. I

exactly. turkish scientists have been warning people on tv for years now and the government did nothing & actually rejected the plans :toofunny3:

I also checked more about him now and I see ur point. But I hope scientists should think about that, because the way he gave such details about this and the nepal earthquake before any seismologist was fascinating.

it's really not that hard to predict that there will be an earthquake, considering the frequency of occurrence and that this is an active seismic zone:

Number of earthquakes worldwide for 2012–2022
Magnitude 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022

the problem is that big chunk of Erdogan's early economic "miracle" was just a result of pumping real estate bubble with cheap loans, but no one bothered to control the quality of these constructions afterwards. Add corruption and the result is tragic. I heard stories from my co-workers how some offices in Istanbul were developed (estate developer illegally added extra few floors and increased the width of them without strengthening the construction and the building was still legally approved, like :biblio:).

Also there is a Turkish phenomenon called "gecekondu":

Quote

In common usage, it refers to the low cost apartment buildings or houses that were constructed in a very short time by people migrating from rural areas to the outskirts of the large cities. Robert Neuwirth writes in his book Shadow Cities that these squatters are exploiting a legal loophole which states that if one starts building after dusk and moves into a completed house before dawn the next day without having been noticed by the authorities, then the next day the authorities are not permitted to tear the building down but instead must begin a legal proceeding in court (and thus it is more likely one can stay). Such buildings may be constructed without going through the necessary procedures required for construction, such as acquiring building permits, and can be very densely populated. Neuwirth stated in 2004 that "half the residents of Istanbul - perhaps six million people - dwell in gecekondu homes".

this is also true (it was reported by Médecins Sans Frontières AFAIR):

A newborn baby, with the umbilical cord still attached to the mum, was pulled out from the rubble in Syria, near the Turkish border. Unfortunately, all the baby's immediate family members did not survive, including the mother.

Our geologists who have been warning about earthquakes on that region predict that more than 180.000 people are under debris and with the extreme weather conditions, hunger, thirst and poor rescue organization, they think only 5% are rescueable. Horrifying numbers.

My friends family who live Iskenderun says the town is like a ghost town. Everything is ruined. How can people get over disaster (financially and mentally) is beyond me. The power of the two earthquakes is equal to 130 atomic bombs scientists say.

I'm new here but in 2020 we had a huge earthquake here in Izmir, 1 month after my dad passed away. My anxiety was through the roof and i was just enjoying life and getting comfortable and this happened. I know we live in earthquake zone but situations like this remembers why we are alive, that we should enjoy every second of life, that it can go any minute. Hope none of us go through this ordeal again. Sorry for my rant.

This is devastating. Syria has already experienced so much devastation and this will increase poverty in Turkey even more.

The fact that Syria isn't even receiving humanitarian aid from many countries due to the sanctions is absolutely inhumane :cries: Props to those defying them and sending help despite their struggles.

My heart goes out to everyone experiencing this nightmare in Turkey/Syria.

erdogan has been talking about people spreading “fake news” about the government not helping enough, even though there is actual evidence :toofunny3:

for example there was an earthquake victim on live tv questioning the help and the news channel muted him :deadbanana:
