JustLikeHoney Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 (edited) Why are stans so obsessive? Like I've literally stop following artists I like on SM because I don't want to be associated with their fan base or read stupid comments online. If I want to listen I just ask Alexa to play the song. You can't even have a conversation or a disagreement about something because it always turns into a name calling personal attack. And the political stans are worse. I won't even get into that. Edited February 4, 2023 by JustLikeHoney
Big Bad Wolf Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 You mean like this? Stans have always gone to bat to defend their fave it is what it is I guess. But I do wish people would be more receptive and not have to feel right all the time or something. It’s exhausting. Most of the time people just want to have discussions and stans take it so personal like it’s their mom or something.

Like everyone is the enemy because they have a different POV.
Jon Snow Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 It’s the way people behave in general. When they don’t feel significant, they make themselves believe that they’re a part of something great, and that they have a place somewhere. They identify with successful artists and find acceptance with the people who are just like them. They act as the artist’s success is their own. When they’re challenged, they don’t wanna be seen as wrong or weak, so they fight. The same is with politics.

So their acceptance into a group turns their inferiority complex into a superiority complex?

Could be, I guess I mean, we all wanna be accepted and be a part of something great. There’s no shame in that. What we should do, however, is treat other people with kindness and respect, and allow different people to peacefully coexist enjoying their success

This thread is about music stans but in reality similar behavior can be seen all around us related to many different things and associations. It's completely irrational but it's normal. Wish people would have a bit more self-awareness though, that'd be great.
Gladiator Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 People get aggressive / passive-aggressive when their sense of identity is threatened, and that's what has unfortunately become the case for a lot of people who find passion in X, Y or Z to the point where they find themselves in the category of stans. This translates to stans of music, of a particular video game, and of a sport team.
Holy Ground Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 It's no different to being a massive fan of a football team, buying season tickets, and obsessively tracking their statistics Normalise being a stan!
K$Ellie Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 i always thought it was strange how people get SO invested in the person themselves, just listen to the music and move on
imabadkid Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 it was funny back in 2012 and 2013 but it’s embarrassing now tbh
Alldeezy Posted February 4, 2023 Posted February 4, 2023 I mean I'd stick up for my fave but I wouldn't go out the way to bully people about there faves. It's so childish
terrorblade Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 yes it's exhausting i guess it's modern tribalism
Cain Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Most stans are chronically online teenagers who are either queer or have mental issues or both, stanning is their outlet
Bencharmer Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Fanbases are a business. The industry got that. I'm sure they love how fans can be extreme for their faves. No matter if it's a pop artist or a sport team... A fan can become loyal, a stan can defend the team/the artist. Mostly when one's life isn't satisfying, one identifies to them and will "spread" the word. So the industry has regular buyers, consumers, free publicity... Stans are obsessive cause industry want them too. Just like sugar, cigarette, alcohol...
