mercurialworld Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 Google has developed an AI system called MusicLM that can generate music in any genre based on a text description (but the company has no plans to release it). MusicLM is considered the first AI system with the ability to produce complex and high-fidelity songs, unlike previous AI systems for music composition that had technical limitations and limited training data. It was trained on a dataset of 280,000 hours of music to generate coherent songs based on text descriptions of "significant complexity." The system's generated songs have a human-like quality, capturing nuances such as instrumental riffs, melodies, and moods even with long and meandering descriptions. The quality of the generated songs is remarkable given that there are no musicians involved. The AI can also use images as input, and generate songs based off them. The article, with audio samples and more explanation, can be found here: https://google-research.github.io/seanet/musiclm/examples/ What do you think this means for the future of music composition, and music as a whole? Do you think AI systems like MusicLM have the potential to revolutionize the way music is composed, or do you think they are more of a novelty?
mercurialworld Posted February 1, 2023 Author Posted February 1, 2023 My opinion: I think that means unlimited Caroline Polachek songs for me but really, I think it's amazing how well this system captures the nuances of music, I don't think AI systems like this will replace human composers anytime soon though. They could definitely still be used to help with the composing process

Oh, so just like everything else they work on that gets cancelled or goes unreleased? They've truly become one of the most useless companies.

Pop Life Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 When AI was first imagined as a concept decades ago it was envisioned as a tool to better automate menial labor so that humanity could focus all their time on truly fulfilling artistic pursuits like painting and music. Instead it's replacing those artists and musicians so that soon it will no longer be a viable path, leaving that same soul-crushing labor as their only option. I find this timeline deeply disturbing.
