Inflation: works harder than your parents, but purchasing power is lower?

inflation is much worse than ever, worked harder than my parents, but they seem to have bought much properties than me when Im of their same time.

in the Philippines, my salary is only bigger by 10-20 percent than what my father is getting 10 years ago but the prices is up to 40-50 percent.

is it the same in your country?

Probably the same answer as everyone but it's insane here in the U.S., it's the way that my parents bought multiple properties in California despite not even working regularly nor going to college when I won't ever be able to buy a house in a significantly less affluent state with a stable post-grad career that gets me

We really were always on a crash course towards these sorts of circumstances though, our parents were just mere benificiaries of chance that they escaped the worst of late capitalism by the skin of their teeth :gaycat7:

I went to the grocery store and a 12 pack of eggs was $9. The same pack of eggs was only $2 a couple of months ago. They're saying it's because of a chicken illness, but now they're saying the price hike is here to stay.

Yes so I’m shifting my focus and trying to enjoy what life can bring me in these hard times. I have to work for at least 35 more years so I’m not gonna be a slave of the system all my life

Yes, a shopping trolley full of a month's worth of groceries would've cost my mum 20,000 Pakistani rupees (PKR) in 2018. In 2023 it costs 35,000 PKR (a 75% increase), while her salary has gone up by around 50% (and that is thanks to a well-timed promotion).

A pound is equivalent to 310 PKR now, while just 3 months ago it was equivalent to 250 PKR. In 2018 it was equivalent to 170 PKR.

It really is unbearable to live especially since prices are rising daily but my salary remains the same for over year with no sign of anything changing.

Yes, the UK house prices were insane and wages were pitiful in comparison to the living costs. I’m in Australia now where it’s a lot better but a house is still unattainable for a lot of young people because of older generations buying so many houses and being landlords making house prices skyrocket and the rental market is very competitive.

well yes considering i have a job when neither parents worked but somehow they had a house, owned land and raised 3 kids :fan:

Well you just need to stop ordering food everyday, live below your means, take on another job, and save money. Another option is to start your own company. Be your own boss.

You simply need to work harder, and have multiple streams of income.

Oh that’s all? :rip:

The point is- we shouldn’t HAVE to “live below our means and not order food” when most of us have masters degrees working prestigious career jobs. We shouldn’t have to settle for living an absolutely miserable life where we’re still having to count coupons and choose between eating food or paying rent and can only live off bare necessities while devoting 40+ hours a week to working out asses off. Who is this system benefiting because it isn’t those of us making 7 figures or less, let alone those living above the poverty line.

Then maybe you should have chosen a career with better employment opportunities.

You’re truly full of basic talking points, aren’t you? I’m a social worker. A career vital to society, where I support underprivileged people in need. My career is important and somebody needs to work these jobs and I 100% deserve to make more than $48,000-80,000 a year. No shame in knowing one’s worth.

These useless diatribes contribute nothing useful to the conversation because they completely ignore reality. If everybody only chose careers based off the money it paid, we’d crumble as a society. Teachers, nurses, service workers, social workers- all backbones of our society are underpaid and overworked.

It says a hell of a lot about you as a person when you know that reality exists and your response is “just don’t work those careers” instead of, “hmm. Maybe these viral careers that I myself rely on to function in society should be paying their workers better.” I should not have to worry about whether I can afford rent and food simply because I chose a career in a highly valuable field.

Check yourself. It’s shameful.

I’m a person who possesses empathy and a nuanced perspective on life. I hope you can cultivate those attributes for yourself, because this heinous attitude of yours is going to rot you, if it isn’t already. :heart:feeling it GIF by The Kennedy Center

Not really. The issues you face are due to the culture and society you inhibit. It’s pretty clear that your country which has shown to be one of the most unequal countries to exist, along with little social mobility. No amount of complaining will fix the issue. You either switch careers to something more fruitful, or leave your country. I would try to communicate by voting, but your country also lacks a functioning democracy.
