Why do you idolize celebrities?

Recommended Posts

Posted

For a large portion of my life, I have been an avid fan of certain celebrities. I followed their every move, read every article written about them, and watched interviews they were in. I had photos of them as my lock screen and always listened to my faves no matter what. In short, I was obsessed.

But... why? Why was I so drawn to these people? I didn't even know them. I had no connection to them whatsoever. And yet, I spent hours upon hours thinking about them and trying to learn everything I could about them. But in the end, they're just people with jobs that put them in the spotlight.

So why do you idolize celebrities? Is it because they have a certain level of fame that makes them special? Is it because we want to be like them? Or is it because they have qualities that we admire? I'm honestly curious to know your opinions.

I have met many of my favorite celebrities from voice actors, tv stars, and singers!

I meet the ones I want to meet because they are/were part of my life and made an impact on my life and made me who I am today!

art is meant to be appreciated.

I love this example! Meeting those who had a genuine impact on you as a person is an amazing feeling.

Of course, but appreciating art =/= idolizing the artist. They are two very different things.

i would like to know why you have conflicted feelings with somebody looking up to somebody else in your professional field that makes content that you enjoy and being inspired by that?

I only idolize Tom Gaynor but his not a celebrity just an underground Artist.

But I have met him, hung with him for an hour with 2 other people, followed me on twitter and if I do send him a message he normally replies at least im stanning someone who knows I exist this time.

My whole life I've always had someone to look upto. As a kid it was a cartoon character then at 12 it started being band members. Nothing wrong with it.

However when people get so up there faves asses and disses everyone else that's not there fave yeah get help

From my first post it's clear I have experience in doing that, and I enjoy/enjoyed it. I don't have major conflicted feelings about it, I was simply wondering why we do it and it's a question that's been on my mind for the past week.

May I ask why this is something you are taking offence to?

I don’t idolize them.

I love pop culture and the people I “stan” I receive some kind of aspiration.

I don’t live through them, not even as a teen I did.

These are really good points. I think for a lot of people, celebrities are aspirational figures, and so much more inspiring than the people we actually know around us :coffee:

I don't, they're just a way of entertainment for me, and a reason to socialize on the internet with strangers :dies:

They’re seen as aspirational, a part of us wants to believe that we can relate to stars’ expressiveness, creativity, power, etc

The other part is social, a lot of us here grew up socially isolated in some form and found community of likeminded people in fandoms, and so the fandom became our community

And another thing I believe in is that idolization is simply part of the human experience, be it in religion, sports, politics or the arts (music and film)

I don't, at all. Never will. If I ever meet any celebrity I'd pretend I don't know who they are - in the end they are just regular people and should be treated the same.

I feel you OT. I had the same revelation.

This is the industry.

All our life they made us addicted to those products. No matter if it's The Beatles, Madonna, Justin Bieber, Britney (the biggest example) or talentless people like JLO, the Kardashians or the TikTokers... They want us to look up at those persons.

I don't mean we can't admire Madonna's discography, Mariah's voice or whatever talent you see in those people... But i agree the danger is when you start living for them or identify to them.

Celebrity means nothing. If celebrities are artists or professionists with a talent why we shouldn't admire them?.

Of course we admire them cause they make us feel good, we feel their art has an impact in our life. What Is wrong with It?. You can't love an artist if you don't know him?. Point is art Is so strong he can create a feeling between two Person even idlf they don't know in person, exactly as they know in person.

So as you idolize your father or a friend you can idolize a person has an impact in your life and you don't know.

Same thing with idolizing a God, It can be something inspire you for the better or can be something you use to create division. An Idol Is not a wrong concept by itself, they can ispire a society for the good.
