Be Business-minded: What is Spotify trying to achieve with the auto-play?

Featured Replies

What do you think is Spotify trying to achieve with auto-play even on premium subscribers?

It used to be with freemium only where they have limited skips, and have no choice but to listen to the song Spotify queues.

Allegedly, labels have no hand in this auto-play. From a business pov, what do you think are they trying to achieve with the GP?

Push payola'd songs according to your most listened genre.

What auto play are you talking about? I have Spotify premium and haven’t noticed anything different. Songs only play next if I select them or they’re next in the playlist/album/artist. I haven’t noticed anything different nor are they playing random or weird songs after what I select.

To discover similar music/artists to listen to. It works the same way as last.fm similar artists.

I played some music from 2007-2010 with autoplay on last week and it recommended the same artists and music from that period. Just like when I used last.fm back in the days.

It's actually useful to me :thing:

more play more money that's all?

Just like radio payola? Thankfully I don't use this feature, if I'm in the mood for random songs I go to an artist radio but I'm never forced to listen to anything.

Auto-play has always been there for Premium for when your queue finishes... you can just turn it on or off.

First thing I did when I got Spotify Premium was turn off autoplay. Anyway, there clearly is label involvement, it's not like they're forcing everyone to listen to Sabrina Crapenter regardless of their listening history out of charity.

It's to show labels how powerful their autoplay feature right now and attract them to pay for it. You would be surprised that millions of spotify users dont even bother to open spotify settings, let alone turn off autoplay feature

Yep. It's the same strategy YT, Twitch, Netflix, and other streamers use to keep people engaged. People are surprisingly lazy, lol.

Spotify cutting a check is just gravy.

to help you discover new artists you might like. I've always liked that feature and I didn't know that you can turn it off

:ahh:

People discovering more music they wanna listen to means they’re more likely to switch to premium so I’d say  the goal is more premium users

Autoplay is not new to premium. People don't want their music to suddenly come to a halt in most circumstances. If I'm cleaning the house and the album I listened to finishes, I'd like to hear other similar or related music.

I have never come across this Sabrina Carpenter woman because it's doesn't reflect my listening. Autoplay always give me alt/indie/Rnb artists... I've discovered a lot of artists through that function.

Spotify has had autoplay for years and it can be turned off.

Uhm, to make more money from labels? A vanishingly low percentage of users is going to care about this change

They’re obviously trying to keep users on the platform and engaged as much as possible.. similarly as any other social media platform right now lol

It keeps replaying nonsense and escapism

Labels are definitely paying to be included in the Auto-Play "recommendations".

As it should :clap3: make it mandatory

Premium have always had autoplay. I've used it multiple times. Aside from Nonsense appearing when it shouldn't, I haven't noticed any major difference. It looks like autopayola is only affecting pop, other genres seem unnafected.

Maybe your usual taste is really too different, but imo it's very noticeable just how often this song comes on autoplay. You can see it in the numbers too that something changed very recently. They also always group this song in with today's big hits. If you play a radio for Anti-Hero, Kill Bill, Midnight Rain, Flowers, Creepin', etc., it is very high up the radio/autoplay for all of those, which just isn't realistic in any circumstances.

This song is making it clear that most Spotify users are just driven by radio and algorithms, so I expect Spotify to become really shameless in using these kinds of "pushes"

I just tried it with Anti-Hero and the follow up is Cuff It and then Sabrina, followed by other hits/popular artists.

Tried again with Haim, Summer Girl and it's a bunch of smaller artists like Phoebe Rogers.

So it does seem like it's only applies to the autoplay of hit/select songs, which makes sense if it's involving label push
