Flocon Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 That's what a big investigation for the CNM (Centre National de la Musique) has revealed after almost 2 years of researches. - this investigation has been done in collaborations with streaming platforms and labels in France - they worked with Spotify, Deezer (streaming platforms leaders in France) and QoBuz and 5 labels Sony, Warner, Wagram, Universal and Believe - Amazon Music gave them the 2022 data while Apple Music and Youtube didn't participate They estimated between 1 and 3 billions fake streams in France during 2021 - 2.6% streams from Deezer were fake streams - 1.1% from Spotify - 1.6% on QoBuz For 2022, Deezer announced 5% of their streams were fake ! This streaming platform is, by the way, one of the first one to fight this type of practice. On Spotify France, 92% of those fake streams came from Rap and Hip Hop sections, while it's from every type of genre for Deezer (even religious genre lol) The Big part of those fake streams is from Outside the most 10 000 most streamed songs. Even though, 0.25% on Spotify and 0.65% are coming from the Top 10 They confirmes it's coming from streaming farms or cyberattacks to control user profiles. Anyway, they're on board to fight this with French Justice. They have already announced they will launch another big investigation in 2024. (I'm sorry for my English, I wanted to share this important info with you because it's all over the news today in France)
Last Boy on Earth Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 What are fake streams? What happens with them? What are the consequences of them? How does it impact the industry? Very non informative thread
KingWitch Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 Shameful. Would be nice if we had a break down of which artists had the most fake streams

Ultimately the numbers for the major players seems small and largely inconsequential. Despite the small numbers, Its interesting to consider that "fake streams" could be deployed selectively to give x or y song a slight edge over a chart competitor in order to score a certain milestone (top 10, No. 1 etc ), although there's no suggestion thats how its being used here

How does it impact the industry? Very non informative thread Let’s say in 2022 Spotify made €100 from subscriptions From those €100, they take a €30 cut for themselves and use the remaining €70 to pay artists and labels on a percentage basis: if you got 10% of the total streams you get €7 (they do this for every country due to differences in subscription prices) Some artists / labels pay for fake streams to increase their own share of the cake and make more money at the expense of other artists. Spotify doesn’t really fight against bots because A) their 30% cut is guaranteed so they never lose, and B) bigger numbers make their service look better, which means more business opportunities. Wolf Alice Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 (edited) So I was initially an apple music user and started trying Spotify with the intention of switching and was slowly porting my library there. Suddenly one day i notice that some random Indonesian songs were automatically playing on my account from an unknown computer. I closed my account and stuck back with apple music since then Edited January 16, 2023 by Wolf Alice

I don't have problem with that It makes no sense to buy fake streams for artists who are somewhat established. You can just get them on some playlists for much less effort. But if you're a totally unknown artist, people will never discover you on their own - and buying some fake streams can make you look much better to the algorithm.
Raphy23 Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 every type of genre for Deezer (even religious genre)
magazine Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 We know who she is, her fanbase won't like this
Taylena Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 No wonder Taylor is doing poorly in France compared to other countries. Her streams are all organic, gluten free and non-GMO.

Pheromosa Posted January 16, 2023 Posted January 16, 2023 i'm sure every label is doing this to some degree

I logged in through a alternative email that I use for random stuff (like atrl) because I just wanted to try it out. And nothing else seemed to happen other than someone trying to get extra streams from my Spotify.
