Lucas32 Posted April 3, 2023 Posted April 3, 2023 Well everyone expected them to deliver and they delivered Cool about it
sweetblindness Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 It's okay. Emily I'm Sorry, $20, and Not Strong Enough are worth the listen, but everything else is a bit forgettable. I think Punisher found me at the perfect time and headspace back in 2020, but now this sad girl indie sound is getting kind of old. There's been a lot of people saying this album feels like B-sides of each singer's respective recent albums and I would agree. The tracklist is just kind of thrown together. And I'm not at all a fan of Lucy's writing...to me, it's way too forced. If this were a movie she'd be winking at the camera during all the "witty" lines. (Leonard Cohen was particularly bad.) It certainly doesn't live up to the enormous hype and ridiculous, almost pandering marketing. But it's okay.
coldoutside Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 I agree with the majority here that 20$, True Blue and Not Strong Enough are the best tracks, but then again I listen to Lucy's solo stuff the most anyway. Never really got into Julien and am a bit ambivalent on Phoebe (I like some of her solo songs, but find her extremely overrated for what she puts out and her personality a bit exhausting.)
Babydoll. Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 True Blue and We're in Love are the best tracks for me right now. Emily im sorry is kinda annoying (?) Lucy has a lovely lovely voice and it sounds even nicer when put next to phoebe's kinda thin sounding voice idk. Anyway nothing really STANDS out and the listening experience as a whole is lukewarm.

I really try not to let an artists' fandom dictate how I view them because lord knows most artists I love have deplorable fans, but there's just something so grating about her stans that turns me off her They have the misplaced snobbishness of screamo band stans in the 2000s who looked down on "poser" Warped Tour acts. I also just find her so morose, self-serious and gloomy. Not to bring up Lana but people also call her depressing, but at least she can bring what's great about a Lana Del Rey song into an upbeat track like A&W (second half) and Peppers. Phoebe is starting to feel so one-note, and Kyoto is the only song I ever return to from her since there's at least a little levity. That's so say, I find this album largely uninteresting. Lucy has flashes of genuine folk greatness like on True Blue, but I just don't connect with the rest. The reviews are just aching to express how special it is culturally for these three women to be making music together, and the songs themselves feel secondary. I'm already dreading the next Phoebe album release cycle.

They really want us to act like these are three female Kurt Cobains bestowing upon us a queer bible for the ages, and there's this implied blame that anyone who doesn't acknowledge how special they are is out of touch. I truly think they could've released anything and it would have secured rave reviews.
sweetkiss Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 i like phoebe alone, this is just ok, its def overpraised by critics. its just ok. true blue is the best.
