People are allowed to be inspired from other cultures despite whatever narrative the internet tries to spin as cultural appropriation.. Which in today's times mostly consists of people not even from the same culture being offended for people from "insert targeted culture of the day here" on their behalf.

Yeah cultural appropriation can only exist inside a culture-society. I can't really talk about how america society works and the race relations between people in their society. But it's just theirs. I don't know why they need to extend everything to all the world. The relationship between races in a global scale are different than in their own society, so are the relationship between different nationalities.

If an italian wants to wear with a  japanese typical costume in a party there is nothing wrong, if a chinese wants to wear an italian typical costume during a party there is nothing wrong. Literally No italian and not chinese will ever get offended from that so stop to force your views to the world.

Gwen stefani always said she feel british when she's american and no one is saying something about that. Why? being british means being white? I didn't know that. She didn't say i feel asian (as race) she said i feel japanese and i feel british, this means she loves the japanese culture and british culture. And every person from every race can be british and can be japanese, it's not about race.

Did people forgot she literally made them not speak English at all? Like they were forced to communicate only in Japanese in public

That's not true though lol.

They know she didn’t meant she’s actually Japanese right? This was clearly written within an agenda. They are upset at her for capitalism basically?

That was the oddest thing about this whole article...them acting like they were confused about whether she actually thought she was Japanese :rip:

It isn't? I take back my statement then

Nope! But not your fault at all, it's become one of the misconceptions that have become "facts" about the era over the years lol.

That writer was intentionally acting obtuse so that she could have her moment. Very immature and since when has Allure been relevant in the year 2023?

I was born in England but my parents are Korean and I wouldn't be offended if Gwen was to rep Korea the way she does Japan. I think it's cute.

Genuinely how did her team allow this to be published. Holy **** this is such a bad look

I spent 32 minutes in conversation with Stefani, many of them devoted to her lengthy answer to my question about Harajuku Lovers. In that time, she said more than once that she is Japanese. Allure’s social media associate (who is Asian and Latina) was also present for the interview and we were left questioning what we had heard. Maybe she misspoke? Again and again? During our interview, Stefani asserted twice that she was Japanese and once that she was "a little bit of an Orange County girl, a little bit of a Japanese girl, a little bit of an English girl." Surely, she didn’t mean it literally or she didn’t know what she was saying? (A representative for Stefani reached out the next day, indicating that I had misunderstood what Stefani was trying to convey. Allure later asked Stefani’s team for an on-the-record comment or clarification of these remarks and they declined to provide a statement or participate in a follow-up interview.)

I don’t believe Stefani was trying to be malicious or hurtful in making these statements. But words don’t have to be hostile in their intent in order to potentially cause harm, and my colleague and I walked away from that half hour unsettled.

screaming at the writer's notes :ahh:

I think what she meant to say was that she grew up and was influenced by these cultures into creating what she is today and how she operates and looks through the world

I....I guess I feel gaslit by the Allure writer. They'd say they shouldn't have had to correct her with further questioning to clarify that she obviously didn't mean she's actually Japanese. They have a point in terms of reducing it to a personality trait which gets to conversations that have followed her forever. I guess I'd care more about any perceived backlash if she was more successful currently outside of residuals and beauty lines.

if you look beyond the short quote OP cherry-picked for a hit thread, gwen actually made some points :clap3:

She clearly loves Japanese culture and has inserted it into her life and art to the point of feeling it part of her. A lot of sensationalism in the writer’s take.

This is a total lie :deadbanana4: the way people like you spread disinformation on these forums to slander other artists is WILD.

First off, if you're so worried about the agency of these women call them by their actual f*cking names: Maya Chino, Jennifer Kita, Rino Nakasone and Mayuko Kitayama. Three of them grew up in Japan, and the fourth member (Jennifer Kita) was born in America. Second, they were meant to be "imaginary friends" based off of Gwen's love for the fashion scene in Harajuku, and the cultural image of a "Harajuku girl" which is very much a real thing in Japan, much like a "goth girl" or a "valley girl" in America.

They were playing characters. Whether that evokes racist imagery or not is absolutely something worth discussing but the INTENT of Gwen wasn't to be racist, and I think that's a point a lot of you are missing - it also doesn't help when you flat out lie and say Gwen forced them to speak in Japanese only.
