Hector Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 R. Kelly and Aaliyah illegally wed in August 1994, with the singer being only 15 at the time. By February 1995, the marriage had been annulled by her parents, Michael and Diane Haughton. According to new information that’s surfaced during the final installment of Surviving R. Kelly, details regarding the nuptials and subsequent annulment remained under wraps—until now—because the 12 Play crooner forced the Haughtons to sign a NDA. The non-disclosure agreement was actually discovered by Jim DeRogatis, the reporter who first broke the news of Kelly’s criminal, sexual exploits over two decades ago. DeRogatis told the New York Times that the annulment and Aaliyah’s legal claim against the crooner had been sealed. “It’s a harrowing document,” he explained. “A non-disclosure agreement on both her part and Kelly’s, vowing not to pursue further legal claims for physical abuse. So, it wasn’t just an underage sexual relationship, he hit her, allegedly, according to that court document.” During one trial, the NDA in question was presented as evidence while Aaliyah was Jane Doe #1. Though the Haughtons declined to comment to producers of the docuseries, members of Kelly’s camp who witnessed the wedding shed light on the disturbing incident. Gem Pratt, a childhood friend of Kelly and his former security guard, claimed that the NDA ensured no charges would be pressed over the illegal marriage. This led the songwriter-producer to sell his rights to her first three albums as a financial incentive. “[Aaliyah’s] dad didn’t want her anywhere near him,” Pratt stated in the docuseries. https://www.vibe.com/music/music-news/r-kelly-nda-aaliyah-surviving-r-kelly-docuseries-1234724234/ F'ing sicko. Genuinely glad this trash will forever be behind bars.
Virgos Groove Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 Just when you think it couldn't possibly get worse, it does. A sick man who deserves to rot in jail forever.
aesthetic bih Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 Poor Aaliyah R. Kelly, you will pay in HELL
cockatoo Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 Unfortunately this isn't really surprising. Poor woman, the people who should've been protecting her as a child completely failed her.
Elvenpath Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 It's so sad to hear about this now. Aaliyah didn't deserve any of that
professor2000 Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 Not surprised at all. I could also see Aaliyah wanting to continue making music, without R Kelly’s interference. So an NDA makes sense. For both parties, imo. Can you imagine if all this came out prior to her sophomore album? Could’ve stalled her career. But because of it, R Kelly also got away with so much...and it protected his image in the process. But karma came back to bite regardless…I guess.
Asparagus Spears Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 I don’t like to say this man is sick because that’s like him getting away with it and making excuses. This man knew exactly what he was doing and knew it was wrong. He tried covering everything up but the truth always come to light
Bloodflowers. Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 I wonder what Aaliyah would have to say today if she didn't pass away so soon.
JoeAg Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 poor angel Aaliyah god she deserved SO much more. an inspiration to so many and though her career was tragically cut short her legacy is undeniable and inexorable. her story is just so sad to me, I hope r kelly rots in jail for the rest of his days

R.kelly is a piece of ****, disgusting this man had such a massive career for so long. The fact that I wasn’t even alive until the 00s but I’ve know about the allegations since like 2012. Everybody completely swept this under the rug until that documentary came out. Disgusting.

That isn’t even an unpopular opinion tho lol. There’s a lot of “pick me energy” types who compare Beyoncé to literally any and every black mainstream singers, especially when it comes to Aaliyah. It’s actually getting weird. People will be like “R Kelly aside, but Beyoncé is overrated and would be a flop if Aaliyah was still alive” or even worst “she was sacrificed so that Beyoncé can thrive” like… anything but addressing the fact that Aaliyah made poor choices as a teenager with leeches who failed her for parents. liquiddiamonds Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 Aaliyah suffered so much. It makes her death even more tragic. This has nothing to do with Bey.
EnoughSaid Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 I really think Aaliyah’s parents failed her in a huge way, and I’m side eyeing the **** out of her mother too because while there is no concrete proof I do believe there’s some truth to some of the gossip around her. He allegedly impregnated her, married her and physically assaulted her and they were all hush hush not wanting to put that bastard in jail or 6 feet under? I guess it was a totally different time and Aaliyah went on to bigger heights in her career year after year. Her entire family is a mess and have mishandled her legacy after the fact too I do totally wonder what she would have said during the Me Too era and new cases against R Kelly. She didn’t speak a word of it ever for the sake of her career and reputation but she was a total victim in all regards.

Vertigo Stick Posted January 4, 2023 Posted January 4, 2023 The NDA makes sense as to why Aaliyah and her family were (and still are) very hush about her relationship with R. Kelly. Songs like Never No More and I Refuse have always made me wonder why Aaliyah was drawn to that type of material. The full picture of the information we do have about their relationship is horrifying. She was done so wrong.

If her parents had done that, she might not have had a career. Not that a career means everything, but given the day/age this happened…it wouldn’t have ended well. Maybe that’s what she wanted…? But I guess we’ll never know. She was so young, and had so much to give the world. It would’ve been ****** up…to have this further be a stain on her future. Idk…it’s a tough one.
Mr. Specialist Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 (edited) I believe it. Aaliyah even sang about experiencing domestic abuse in a romantic relationship on “Never No More”. Now we know the song was most likely about him. Edited January 5, 2023 by Mr. Specialist
PopMusicJunkie Posted January 5, 2023 Posted January 5, 2023 He truly is a monster. The amount of mental & physical torture he put these victims through, just for his own sick pleasure, is heartbreaking. Everyone involved should be rotting in prison.
