TaggedGalaxy Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 So the topic of the word obese came up during a conversation with some friends, and one friend said that obese is a slur, I looked it up and many people agree with her that the word has become a slur to fat shame and body shame people. https://www.instagram.com/p/CAbP57WpNo1/?hl=en What do you think, should we stop using the term obese to describe people who are heavier?
Alongoria13 Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Of course not, if you are obese you are obese start hitting a treadmill sweetie
Sombre Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 I don't think so. Obese is used medically to indicate that a person is more than just overweight. It does get used as an insult, but that doesn't make it a slur. We're not about to lock the obesity epidemic behind a slur jail cell.
Digitalism Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 almost any word can be used to attack some one depending on context and intention But some people like being martyrs and will see attacks where there isn't

Alongoria13 Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Fat people are trying tooo hard to be a "marginalized group" but all they do is make it harder for actually marginalized groups like the LGBT or racial/religious minorities be taken seriously by society so annoying. Embrace the fatness without victimizing yourself nor antagonizing others and go! xx
Delirious Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Depends on context. though rarely it can be offensive it still can be offensive.
stoopidjenna Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 I mean, obesity is overused as an insult and the BMI scale has been proven to be very limited in actually diagnosing health. But she’s not providing an alternative term so what does she want people to say?

Illuminati Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Considering the way people have been using it as an insult rather than a condition I'd say perhaps.
Hephaestus Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 How is "obese" anti-black? Some people just say anything
truthteller Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 i dont know, ask WHO and Michelle Obama then https://www.who.int/health-topics/obesity#tab=tab_1
Khal Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 It's not a slur, but my only issue with it as that I have seen it incorrectly used to describe people who are just "fat" or slightly overweight. They're not the same imo
