How is MJ at 86 bad when freaking Donny Hathaway is only a 126. MJ was a great singer as a kid but come on

syrus Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 Then why is that overrated singer with 900 writers in the Top 10?

MJ was a great singer as a kid but come on I am so relieved to learn I'm not the only one who thinks Michael was a stronger vocalist as a child. Don't get me wrong, his vocal stylings as an adult were still great and his tone undeniably influential, so he earned a spot on this list regardless. But I thought #86 was a fair enough ranking (obviously there were artists who shouldn't have been ranked above him, but those should have been replaced by the snubs and those with unjustly lower placements). In my view, while he consistently killed the uptempos, I always felt there was something lacking in the ballads in terms of delivery and sincerity. For reference, when you take ballads from singers like Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Mercury, and Céline Dion, they always poured their heart out in such a chilling and powerful manner, putting weight on every word they're singing. Also, I agree with the writer's argument that "it’s been argued that as his world darkened his voice devolved into a parodic arsenal of tics" - with exceptions, of course. Donny Hathaway was criminally underranked, for sure. "A Song For You" alone is enough showcase of his incredible voice and passionate delivery. Edited January 6, 2023 by Moonlight Nation
Green Posted January 6, 2023 Posted January 6, 2023 The list is a joke no matter what. They just wanted the clicks from current stanbases. That's why that BTS member is listed over Celine Dion

She literally pioneered a whole music genre. Exactly and she technically changed the pop genre The audacity to do Miss Donna dirty like that? IFL still makes goose bumps run through my skin every listen. OT: That still does not make them look any better. Celine Dion not making a feature in a list about vocals or singing is an invalid list. Her voice is instantly recognizable and resonates with millions of people across the globe. That is genius transcendence. Such lists are only known and spoken of in music forums but the fact that this list was also being backlashed by the GP shows how simply wrong it is
Mean Trees Posted January 10, 2023 Posted January 10, 2023 Rolling Stone is a for profit company in the time of maximum profit seeking and desperation for revenue due to the changing nature of old media. It's not a surprise that so many were either placed much lower than they should have or were omitted completely. It's a clickbait article designed to validate stans' delusions especially with BTS's inclusion.
