She says she was raised with both Islam and Christianity in her house because her mom was Christian but she identifies religiously as muslim and that's the faith she practices because she says its what makes most sense to her and the best way she connects to God. She has posted Bible verses multiple times in the past year though. Not to mention she is HEAVILY into astrology and tarot cards. Literally said she dropped the album because her astrologer told her it's the "right time". Sis is known to be a mess, so I am pretty sure she is just spiritual and incorporates her favorite parts of the religions she was brought up with
IBeMe Posted January 3, 2023 Author Posted January 3, 2023 Just now, KatyPrismSpirit said: she might have grown up as a muslim but isnt one anymore. i dont know any muslim woman singing about having sex and doing bikini photoshoots. just because she grew up in the fold of islam and still resonates with that doesnt mean she is a muslim woman. she has a muslim background. that is like saying dua lipa is a muslim just because her family is. Not comparable at all. There are tons of Christian women who sing about sex. Are they no longer christian? Nah. If someone claims to be muslim or any other faith that's literally all it takes for them to be of that faith Is she maybe considered a "bad muslim" by many religious people? Probably. But that does not remove the fact that she LITERALLY said she identifies as muslim, believes in God / Allah and still practices the faith. You do realize that you do not have to practice your faith intensly to consider yourself a part of that faith right? I'm Spanish and French but have a Moroccan side of the family. None of them pray or go to the mosque. Some of them date outside of their community, they drink etc but still identify as muslim and are considered muslim because of that. It's like saying Lady Gaga or Katy Perry are not Christian because they dress up provocativly etc...faith and the way ppl practice it depends on where you live and how you interpret it. That's it.

Like she takes parts of different beliefs and stuff but her base religion is Islam. It's what she identifies with religiously. Also tons of ppl incorporate astrology and tarrot and ish even if they are of another religion Why is that different for muslims? In all Abrahamic faiths astrology and ish is seen as sinful yet if a Christian does it no one says they are not christian anymore. Muslims can do all that ish and still identify with their faith too. Especially those hwo live in the west and don't live in those super religious and strict countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia lol

IBeMe Posted January 3, 2023 Author Posted January 3, 2023 Atrl is an odd place. It's either yall hate all muslims or when a muslim is liberal and modern then they are not muslim (even if they identify and tell you they are muslim ). It's like yall have a one size fits all idea of what a muslim is or should be and if they do not fit that model then it is impossible for them to be muslim because they are not out here doing things you think muslims would do. Muslims like ALL religious groups come with different ideals, practices, levels of religiosity etc...Some do not identify with the faith and come from a muslim background and only culturally identify with Islam (which is the likely case with someone like Dua) but then there are those that LEGIT tell you they are muslim and appreciate the faith and practice certain things of it but because they are not in a hijab and are not super conservative or religious suddenly you cannot falthom that a muslim could practice their faith like how a lot of you casual christians practice yours Tons of you still identify as christian (me included) even though we do not practice the faith too much. This is how it is with someone like SZA too and tons of other muslims. It's as simple as that yall. There isn't just two forms of islam (super strict or not muslim anymore). There are lots of muslims who choose to identify as muslim and practice only some aspects or casually practice a bit here and there but still identify with their faith.

Jotham Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Congrats to her! Unsurprised at some of those posts though since some ATRLers are weirdly obsessed with Islam.

You'd be surprised how much contempt most of them have for Muslim culture in general.

Literature Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Why is this something to "celebrate"? Music like SZA's is unequivocally haram in Islam. Celebrating a #1 on the Hot 100 would be like celebrating the fact a liquor produced by some """"Muslim"""" distiller became a best seller

She openly talks about her experience as a Muslim woman in this interview https://muslimgirl.com/sza-thinks-about-wearing-hijab-all-the-time-ramadan-muslim/ And I think it’s ridiculous that you believe Muslim women can’t wear bikinis and talk about sex. It’s 2023, let’s move on from stereotypes please

That’s what it is. Is her music considered sinful to most strict Muslims? Of course, but to the hundreds of millions of Muslims who consume secular music it’s something to celebrate. It’s always nice to see representations of yourself and I am sure somewhere out there an American black Muslim girl is living for SZA’s success as an unapologetically Muslim AND sexual artist. As contradictory as those two things may seem.
Ombre Posted January 3, 2023 Posted January 3, 2023 Absolutely NOT looool. Muslims dont claim her. Unless you are Muslim or part of the culture please dont try to make her a representative of Islam. Islam isn't Christianity. It isn't a free for all and muslims dont navigate through life with the cognitive dissonance Christians do. 13 minutes ago, JoJo said: And I think it’s ridiculous that you believe Muslim women can’t wear bikinis and talk about sex. I dont know what is in her heart but i dont even think sza herself would claim she is a muslim woman as of 2023.

People have literally posted recent interviews and photos of her saying she is muslim sis. She just appreciates other faiths verses and stuff. She had a whole IG live with a muslim girl about religion and how she practices Islam. She posted pics of her going to the mosque with her family, posted pics of her in a hijab for Eid celebrations last year, she did an interview with Nessa a couple years ago talking about Islam etc...idk why it is so hard for you to accept she is muslim but a "quirky" muslim just like there are tons of free spirited christians or w/e. Idk where you live or what your perception is of muslims but I challenge you to open your mind up a little ot understand not all muslims are the way you perceive them to be. Anyways...an interview from 2022: “I stopped covering after 9/11,” said the artist who was born to a Muslim father and a Christian mother in Maplewood, New Jersey. “I was in Middle school, and I regret so much being afraid of what people said about me — that I let somebody dictate how I was,” she admitted. “We played (shows) in Malaysia and Indonesia and it was really comforting to be able to cover up for the show,” she said. “But I didn’t have anybody say to me I was being fake… I just really loved that,” she added. The singer, whose real name is Solána Imani Rowe, also stated that her and her family experienced racially-motivated aggressions due to their faith. “Someone threw a brick at my dad’s mosque,” she recalled. “I guess I didn’t realize things were weird and awkward until I got a lot older. I couldn’t believe Islamophobia randomly deciding I’m oppressed because I’m covering my hair,” she said. https://www.arabnews.com/node/1837326/offbeat Edited January 3, 2023 by IBeMe

Im not saying she cant identify as a muslim woman but I really hope publications and fans dont try to frame her achievements as milestones for the muslim community because I feel pretty confident saying that is not what the muslim community wants lol
