Why don’t they just pull out of Ukraine and put an end to all of this instead? That would be much cheaper (not to mention save all those lives in the first place)

Because Putin would "lose face" and his fellow Russians would see him as weak, which when you run a country like he's been doing that's a dangerous thing for someone trying to remain in power.
