61. Doja Cat – Woman

Favorite Bit: the instrumental + “Divine feminine, I'm feminine!”

mbVJcVh.png

60. Djo – Change

Discovered this on Spotify. Took me a whole year to look up that this is actually Stranger Things Star Joe Keery. It’s more mind blowing than it should be. The nostalgia of this buzzy electro-pop track reminds me of the days of Ra Ra Riot and Passion Pit with a dash of Justin Timberlake.

Favorite Bit: the shifts in melodies and vocals

59. JID – Sistanem

Favorite Bit: "I felt like she was yellin' like Azealia in that megaphone" + James Blake's surprise appearance

I'm In Love With You :jonny5: a BOP

I should have checked out Spoon and Sharon Van Etten more this year. I liked what I heard (as well as some of their past stuff) but then kinda forgot about it. Gonna listen to your picks though.

Don't Forget My Love I did forget about (lol) but it's cute. Bey charting well on another list too.

Expand

I tend to always miss Sharon or catch her before the year closes and she ends up super dead end of my lists but she's caught my attention much quicker. This wasn't Spoons most notable year but songs like "Wild" and "My Babe" moved me.

Don't Forget My Love type of songs don't really do it for me but I'm a big Miguel fan so he brought something different to the table!

Constant Repeat (best song on the album with ease), Not My Job, America Has a Problem :clap3:

I'm In Love With You and Mistakes from the updates before were great as well! I was never a huge 1975 fan but that was prob their best album

Expand

Funny, I haven't checked out this latest album so they're just singles artists for me. I prefer their early stuff.

Yas hatchie praise!  Quicksand is prob my bottom of the singles, only cause its a Stay With Me 2.0 and not as good.  Glad you enjoy though.

AHAP is a VERY interesting and very good choice I think the reason why I do like it so much is it does give legend Ci.HMU & CR amazing choices :jonny:

Expand

Same! Quicksand was def going for that standard pop formula. Queen has at least one more song still standing high.

Constant Repeat should've been singles i fear :jonnycat: Truly the top 3 of the album

Expand

Constant Repeat is a banger, hit that should've been. Much stronger and original than Beg For You.

I kinda liked "Fair" at first, but to be fair.mp3 it aged too fast for me

Porta should've been on main album tbh :jonny:

2 Die 4 :jonny5: wait, I can't believe she never used a sample before :deadbanana4: QUEEN TINGZ

Out of Time should've been his classic tbh :'(

58. Future - WAIT FOR U (feat. Drake & Tems)

I did not want to like this song, but I really love what was done with this Tems sample and anytime she can get some success, I’m a cheerleader. Perfect vibe for Springs transition to Summer. Everything here works for me but Future himself and this is Drake’s best effort this year to me, should have been his song.

Favorite Bit: the “oohs” in the background

WUqQeLX.png

57. JID - Surround Sound (feat. 21 Savage & Baby Tate)

JID is nothing to be played with. Hate to compare but his rapping style, texture of his voice, the animated flow switching and musicality reminds me of Kendrick Good Kid, M.A.A.D City days. “Surround Sound” is full of double entendres and multi syllabic rhymes, and Baby Tate alluring bridge is the cherry while JID flex’ his rap skills and Savage just does what he does best (monotone flow).

Favorite Bit: Part II of the song and Baby Tate’s Bridge

brgagW4.png

56. Raveena - Secret (feat. Vince Staples)

Favorite Bit: the refrain and outro

rknuud7.png

55. Megan Thee Stallion - Sweetest Pie (feat. Dua Lipa)

Favorite Bit: “You've never been to Heaven, have you?” prepping the booming miami bass beat

Posted

54. Muni Long - Hrs and Hrs

Repetitive but genius marketing to really get your song unintentionally poppin’ on Tik Tok and being a radio magnet. After a decade of penning pop and R&B hits for other artists, she earned her first Hot 100 hit under her own artist credit with a song about the various ways to spend intimate time with your partner. When this dropped it was such a moment and I appreciated the fan and artist engagement to cover this track.

Favorite Bit: “You sit me up on the counter / Instantly, it's thunder showers”

l5tSF7S.png

53. FKA twigs - honda (feat. pa salieu)

One of the most twisted songs of the year, not by the content but by the haunting produced elements warped with dance floor baselines. Twigs adds the sensual and pa salieu adds the grit to this nod to British culture. You hear a new sound jump at you every listen.

Favorite Bit: the breaks and ghost like backings

UpZaZXS.png

52. 100 gecs - Doritos & Fritos

Fun and unserious.

Favorite Bit: the pre-chorus (“And the TV's tuned to cable, and I'm sleeping when I'm able….”)

dwBmC2s.png

51. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - The Dripping Tap

18-minutes of psychedelic chaos that is so fun you won’t even care about the runtime, it's like 4 songs in one. It starts off with a soulful section leading to a euphoric burst. You experience a whiplash all types of rock from blues, psych rock, and krautrock and it’s all live.

Favorite Bit: the bridge (“Drip, drip from the tap don't slip”) + the guitar solos

2 Die 4 is my fave so far but honda and Woman are bops too :lakitu:

Out Of Time, 2 Die 4, El Apagón praise yaass :jonny:

Yes i agree that Players Surround sounds like straight up from Kendrick's Good Kid era. I was shook when i first listen to it :jonny: Also Raveena's Secret is just THAT girl. Truly one of my favorites this year

Also the way that Coi Leray's Player remix is hitting right now. I kinda blame my TikTok algorithm for that :dies:

50. ROSALÍA – HENTAI

This is a sonic departure from all her alternative reggaeton-heavy singles. “Hentai” gives ballad feel with its soft vocals and jazz-bar piano, but it’s literally just a raunchy ass sex song. How genius is she? the juxtaposition of the pretty delivery and out-there lyrics once you run them through translation.

Favorite Bit: the shuddering Portishead like percussion

kUHIjgs.png

49. Ari Lennox – Pressure

Favorite Bit: the “Pressure” backup vocals that sound like soul music popularized in the 60s and 70s

xEnK793.png

48. Ava Max – Million Dollar Baby

Favorite Bit: “She's a miracle, oh, oh, oh, ooh!”

V2671tj.png

47. Charli XCX – New Shapes (feat. Christine and the Queens and Caroline Polachek)

Favorite Bit: Chris’ backings and Caroline sliding through with her vocal arrangements

Ho2zTpY.png

46. Ciara – Better Thangs (feat. Summer Walker)

This is the cutest **** ever, makes me so damn happy! That’s the vibe Ci has been going for lately and I can’t fault it. She’s rich, happy and in love. All the things I’m not…but a dude can dream. Ciara teased this song for months on her IG and I think this was a clever move to release a song that closed the loop to Summer’s Still Over It. Who would have ever thought these two would complement each other vocally and sound.

Favorite Bit: the breezy feel-good chorus

45. Ravyn Lenae – Venom

Voice is definition of ethereal! The synth-heavy, funky beat for Lenae to glide over is reminiscent to the work of Pharrell and the Neptune’s on Kelis’ album Tasty.

Favorite Bit: “Go get 'em, fake killer / Don't tell 'em (don't tell 'em), straight venom”

nx3UFUh.png

44. Charli XCX – Baby

All of the singles prior to this were pop and EDM heavy. This is the most “R&B” sounding Charli has done yet. The production is so glossy AF and as repetitive some sections were its total earworm.

Favorite Bit: the booming production on the bridge + the outro (“I’ma **** you up”)

KYOKDjH.png

43. GloRilla - Tomorrow 2 (feat. Cardi B)

I’m sorry but GloRilla sounds like she’s recording outside of the actual booth, down the hall with marshmallows in her mouth. The **** is so off-key. But somehow it works because its fun. This is so gutta and reminds me of rap from 2004. Cardi slid on this jawns with the most memorable-quotable 20 bars in all rap this year.

Favorite Bit: Cardi’s iconic verse

Xoob06Q.png

42. Soccer Mommy – Shotgun

Favorite Bit: the soft soothing vocal backings over the guitar lines

ShgcYNQ.png

41. Ravyn Lenae - Skin Tight (feat. Steve Lacy)

She put up a great vocal performance within her range and the production is definition of soft hypnotic.

Favorite Bit: “Attitude, my type” + Ravyn and Steve’s vocal layer.

iGyTTih.png

40. Denzel Curry – Walkin

Favorite Bit: the switch up to when Part II of the song punches through

39. Megan Thee Stallion - Plan B

One of the most anticipated songs to come out of this year’s Coachella set. Megan really took us back to the good ole ‘90s, drawing comparisons to hip-hop legends Lil Kim and Queen Latifah, rightfully dragging men. We failed to make this a smash like we failed Megan for 2 years while she was battling every incel’s and misogynists.

Favorite Bit: Megan’s strong entrance

Yog9ke7.png

38. Arlo Parks – Softly

Favorite Bit: the earworm chorus

Lb8cuiA.png

37. Phoenix – Tonight (feat. Ezra Koenig)

Ooh, take me back to Golden Age of Indie-Pop, Kings! Nostalgic but refreshing, reflective and joyous song.

Favorite Bit: opening bass, hi-hats and guitar line

K5lIujJ.png

36. Beyoncé – PURE/HONEY

Favorite Bit: the transition teases and soundbites

N42WfBK.png

35. FLO – Summertime

Nothing to breakdown here, it’s self-explanatory. A BOP. This is a girl’s summer anthem. Some say Cheetah Girls, but I get Destiny’s Child “So Good” energy.

Favorite Bit: the pre-chorus

7UxwLDn.png

34. Charli XCX – Twice

Twice is the closing cut on CRASH and boy does it throw you for a loop. Sounds like a bubbly electric bop, but it sure is depressing. It’s about being grateful for your friends but also having anxiety that someday it will vanish. My personal fave from the album for both the mixed feels it brings.

Favorite Bit: the chorus
