Omgggg here I go abandoning!! the good sis @Ace Reject told me to get a move on, but frankly I dont think my top five will change the rankings much since either i'll be in like with a lot of the picks or have songs no one cares for. Either way, to cap off 2022 one more time and a send her away to make room for 2023, here is my top five songs.

GreatestLoveofAll: 2022 Countdown Finale (Top 5)

5. Break My Soul- Beyonce

Beyoncé - Break My Soul-en.png

"I'm looking for motivation, i'm looking for a new foundation, yeah"

What is there to say? The comeback of the year, the song that was a pop and dancey as Beyonce has been in such a long time, yet so unequivocally black and so very much her, its exactly what I expected from her and what I needed from her in the long run. At first, I was a bit lukewarm towards it. I didnt know if I was going to see myself listening to it much- and I tried. I would play it over and over again, looking for a part I really liked, desperate to see if my first full length Beyonce era wouldn't disappoint me. What I didn't know was that by doing that, the song would get ingrained in my head and before I knew it, dominated my summer. The way a visual would had elevated this so far, but Bey seems to know what she's doing- it became her biggest solo hit in a decade for a reason. The motivation that she speaks is one not for herself only (though it definitely is worth noting she is also self observant) but for us- like many artist on this list and a few in this top five, she's doing her share of lifting the world up from the pandemic's grip and she does it flawlessly.

4. Cooped Up- Post Malone

Post Malone - Twelve Carat Toothache.png

"Til the daylight come, til' the daylight come"

No, I am still very much anti-heterosexual music. Post has been the poster boy for the whole vibe of music that I had been railing against for half a decade now and while he did have some songs I appreciated on Hollywood's Bleeding, it would be his fourth album (and the cursed one sadly) that seemed to make my reserve against him melt at least just a little bit more. He has always been a pop boy in disguise as a rapper in my opinion and with Twelve Carat Toothache, the melodies and production seems to be shameless in that regard. On the singles at least, he isn't venturing off from what his usual lyrical content and vibes are- he's vengeful on his collab with The Weeknd "One Right Now" (a solid 7), he's flirtatious and truly beaming on his hit collab with Doja Cat. Yet when he and 2020's biggest hitmaker Roddy Ricch come together on the celebratory "Cooped Up", its definitely a sort of song that caught my attention immediately. The steady beat, the post Covid sensibilities and just how free Post sounds here- it really should have been the album's biggest hit and is definitely up there with the "Sunflowers" and "Better Now"s of his discography.

3. Cuff It- Beyonce

A black woman in a spiky metal bathing suit sits a top of a crystal horse

"Bet you you'll see far, bet you you'll see stars"

Ok, ok ok. Q4 of 2022 says that this is my song of the year according to the plays it has gotten (both from me and the GP- the fact that it has surpassed "Break My Soul" already is actually massive). It was a long journey, but "Cuff It" being the best song of Renaissance is pretty much default and there is no other song to use to define what makes Bey's seventh album a masterpiece in all its glory. You cna shimmy, you can tap your foot, you could do the church lady dance, you could bob your head- and all in one chorus. Really, what makes "Cuff It" so good is the simple fact that it's not trying to insert a message other than being sexy, being fun, being carefree. Beyonce hasnt sounded so free and celebratory. She hasnt made a song so purely for the purpose of just having fun and while her political and social commentary and vision is still the highlight of her unparalleled career, her being a party girl with the experience and maturity to make her art even better is something I didnt know I needed from Beyonce... and I'm glad she has reached a point where she could do that. The real reason this isnt higher is because I wanted my list to feel like it really reflected all of 2022 for me and I would be amiss if there werent two songs that came out before "Cuff It" and are just as good for me.

2. About Damn Time- Lizzo

Lizzo - About Damn Time.png

"Turn up the music, lets celebrate. I got a feeling, I'm gonna okay. Okay, alright... its about damn time."

I love Lizzooooooo and in my blurb for "2 Be Loved", I pretty sure I detailed that very well. This song was gonna be either 2 or 1 and even as I am typing this up, I have no clue where it might end up- I guess we will figure it out when I click the submit button. While "Cuff It" was song of more personal significance, "About Damn Time", like so many of the songs she writes and the ones that made me love her the moment I heard "Good As Hell", is a universal anthem. She lifts people up, she makes them see their own beauty and perseverance and with this bop, she's as fearless and a guiding light as ever. I always smile whenever the "Anywayyyysss" echoes in my ears because I know almost no matter where I am and what I'm feeling at the moment, Lizzo giving us a "pump me up" will always work for me. Here is to her never regressing from the positivity she has built her career on- and that she will always find love in herself, for herself.

1. Slow Song- The Knocks (w/ Dragonette)

"You're the desert, I'm the rain and we both know I never stay but still you wanted it."

I just knew that I had to make this my #1 song the moment I heard it. I had this feeling last year with Dayglow's "Close to You" (my number one song of 2021) and "Boys" in 2020. These songs are all perfect examples of the bright, almost floating pop music that just makes my day because it doesn't try to be anything else but pop. The relationship described in the song is definitely toxic and not something that I would really vibe with given a different musical context, but the songs production wins me over every time and the uniqueness of the vocal delivery (done by Dragonette) convinces me of its rightful place at #1 every time. It is still a bit early to see what song claims my attention for 2023, but with the trend I've had, I truly can't wait to see what it is.
