TheWayWeWere Posted December 20, 2022 Author Posted December 20, 2022 T O P 5 0 A L B U M S Quote 34 Emeli Sandé | Let's Say For Instance "Does it feel like light at end of tunnel's getting even harder to believe in?" Emeli spend most of the latest years trying to find her place in music soundscape - trying with adult pop, r&b, neo-soul, Adele-esque ballads, retro sound..almost everything. But I think with new album she finally in the right place. Uplifting pop with r&b or electronic/garage twists, inspirational lyrics, warm piano ballads - everyone can find their own favorite on this album. The variete of genres and lyrical themes are amazingly big. You can feel growing self-confident and self-acceptance in her singing. This is like the celebration of herself, of life, of music. Her strongest and most interesting album yet. highlights: Summer, Oxygen, Yes You Can, Brighter Days Quote 33 Björk | Fossora "In a woman's lifetime she gets four-hundred eggs, but only two or three nests woven with a mother's life force" I didn't really like "Utopia" and the era around it, but it's freaking Bjork, she always has something to surprise us! "Fossora" sounds like a farewell, a goodbye to her mother, a way to dealt with her grief and pain, it sounds like a road to home, it's practically her finding a way to be fun and happy. It's pure and raw emotions reminds me of Vespertine or Vulnicura (some of my favorite works from her), it's more uptempo rhythm and banging bass reminds me of her early works - maybe this album indeed sounds more like something 'from earth', but it's not a bad thing to me. The way she dealts with her emotions in poetic lyricism and experimental instrumentation is absolutely unique. One of her most personal, accessible, gorgeous albums. highlights: Her Mother's House, Sorrowful Soil, Fungal City, Ovule T O P 1 5 0 S I N G L E S Quote 102 Sigrid, Bring Me The Horizon | Bad Life "It's hard to find a place to hide, when you're running from what's inside no matter where you go there you are" As a person with depression issues, this song hits hard. Beatuiful and heartbreaking lyrics. Powerful performance by both. Quote 101 Rina Sawayama | Hold the Girl "Sometimes I just want to run away, leave behind that old me, start again" The best single and probably the best song from album. 2-step beat is really catchy, it's very athmospheric and literally serves as pop excellence (that choir bridge alone). And the themes of freedom and independence behind that dance pop track are excellent. Great songwriting, production and overall, just a gorgeous cinematic song. Quote 100 The Weeknd | Out of Time "Now I can’t keep you from loving him, you made up your mind" This 80s inspired r&b song is absolute standout from his latest albums - I love his disco/electropop realness, but this...this is just so pure, sincere, bittersweet at the same time. Pure magic - voice, lyrics, melancholic synth-r&b music. Quote 99 Ciara, Coast Contra | JUMP "If you want it I got all the flavors you need" I'm always here for Ciara's comeback! Even on very fillerish 'Body Marks' she served us with some bangers, 'Jump' follows the line of 'Level Up' and honestly deserved to be a semi-hit tbh, it's energetic throwback to to a Missy Elliott best bops and even some crunk r&b, really fun and dancey bop, it really makes your ass jump I hope she continues the era next year. Quote 98 ALMA | Summer Really Hurt Us "How the hell did we keep dreaming when I did you so wrong?" I always hate how Alma is such a great pop songwriter, but rarely saves anything good for herself After pretty disappointing debut album, her return this year felt kinda overwhelming, and even though first two singles were pretty nice too - it's 'Summer' that really shines. Sad dancefloor anthem with nostalgic sound? I love that. That 'baroque'-like violin music in the hook is just unforgettable! And these synths in the chorus. Whew. I kinda hate how it wasn't released in the summer though Quote 97 Hatchie | Quicksand "If I had everything I wanted would I want more?" Maybe the best banger out from her latest album. It's so effective, dreamy, cinematic, and the euphoric chorus is just unforgettable. Amazingly catchy for such a strong, delicate song Quote 96 Marina | Happy Loner "It's too hard to pretend so I stay away from my friends" First of all, i'm so happy Marina extended 'Ancient' era a little, second of all - whew, this song feel so personal to me. As a person who actually likes to be alone, this felt so comforting and honest. Probably among her best songs ever. TheWayWeWere Posted December 22, 2022 Author Posted December 22, 2022 I can't at ATRL being broken almost every day this is the messiest time for BOs T O P 5 0 A L B U M S Quote 32 Rina Sawayama | Hold the Girl "How am I supposed to feel when you're telling me that nothing in my life is real?" Probably one of the most conflicting record on my list - I really like Rina, she's very talented, she has an ear for pop bangers, she has an actual vision of her work, she can create really great athmosphere with her music - but I feel like she always missing something with her full-lenght albums. While 'Hold the Girl' is much more cohesive, more focused than 'SAWAYAMA', I feel like she gets lost in many overproduced tracks - I mean, album started off strong, but kinda gets filler-drowned in the middle, but thankfully picks up in the end. Still, I really appreciate theatrical feel of album, I love early 00s inspirations, and surely some really amazing big choruses. highlights: Send My Love To John, Frankenstein, Phantom, Holy (Til You Let Me Go) Quote 31 Tove Styrke | HARD "You made this pain pretty like a piece of art" I honestly hate her for releasing one album in 5 years and album being a short one. I mean, 25 minutes, seriously? I'm ok with her doing pop bops, but at least make them longer. The album serves us with another bunch of pop bangers, basically every track on this sounds like hit in the making, but overall it feels a bit of a mixing bag. Sequencing on album is messy, and feels like there's no direction towards it - just a selection of bops she recorded in the last few years. But aside of these problems, this album gives us pretty bunch of strong bops. highlights: Lies, Bruises, Cool Me Down, Another Broken Heart, Start Walking Quote 30 Kehlani | blue water road "Wouldn't say I'm a lie, but I'm not always honest" Over the last years I was sure she peaked with her debut album, but with new record she proves me wrong. Amazingly delicate, warm album, probably her most mature and personal. I love how she plays with different genres here, never going to much into one - pop, neosoul, r&b, even guitar-driven ballads. Even though this album lacks of big number (except of Up at Night and Wish I Never), it feels cohesive, warm, mellow, creamy - mostly like the calm waves of the ocean. Maybe her best album yet. highlights: wish i never, little story, any given sunday, everything, more than i should T O P 1 5 0 S I N G L E S Quote 95 Hatchie | Lights On "Don’t stop, it could never be too much" A perfect opener for an amazing album - perfectly dreamy, extremely catchy, heartfelt and...sexy? Pretty perfect euphoric guitar driven jam. Quote 94 Sheryl Crow | Circles "Maybe you don't understand what I'm going through, it's only me, what you got to lose?" Tbh I never like the original and honestly forgot about its existence ever since it left the radio, but this version is practically magical - really refreshing and much more "alive" and relatable take. The way she makes this sound like her own song practically Quote 93 BANKS | I Still Love You "I still want you get to know me once more baby" Really surprising Banks' take on ballad - almost lullaby like, really mellow and delicate song. Amazingly beautiful haunting instrumental with her vulnerable intimate delivery makes such a great combination. Quote 92 Willow | hover like a GODDESS "I'll never be fine if you won't be mine" Probably among my least favorites from album, but it still slaps hard! Kinda reminds me of early Paramore days, amazing vocals and lyrics delivery, and i love these little 'quiet' intermissions she included here. Quote 91 Betty Who | Blow Out My Candle "Did it make you stronger beating up on me?" The most obvious stand-out from album, this song served pop at its best - uplifting, addictive and fun. Yeah, it's another generic pop with anthemic chorus from her, but you can't deny how catchy it is. Quote 90 Let's Eat Grandma | Happy New Year "Nothing that was broken can touch how much I care for you" Wow, this one hits hard - sparkling, almost firework-like electro-pop banger with the touching lyrics about frienship. Both happy sounding, but emotional and touching with its content. Quote 89 Charli XCX | Baby "I'ma **** you up, I'ma **** you up" Honestly, this is one of my least favorites from 'CRASH' - I mean, production is amazing - glossy, funky, really fun and sassy - but the lyrics is too repetitive and chorus is boring. Quote 88 iamamiwhoami, ionnalee | Thunder Lightning "Need to see destruction to feel alive" Wow, this is probably the best song from album and one of the most beautiful music pieces I've heard this year. Really beautiful, delicate folk pop production is making the magic to this song.
