I leave 2022 behind feeling unsatisfied, uninspired and generally with a sense of dread that my taste in music has finally stagnated. In retrospect, 2022 was a bad year for music, and a bad year for humanity, so I can only hope that better times and better tunes are on the horizon. With all that said, there are roughly twenty or so songs I want to give my flowers to, and a whole one singular album that has moved me in any way. This'll be my first time doing this, we'll see how it goes. Stick around and find out!

AOTY 2022

Masayoshi Soken - ENDWALKER: FINAL FANTASY XIV Original Soundtrack

48kGTEt.jpg

An album that has touched me so deeply that I can't go through some of the songs without becoming a sobbing mess. Of course, being a video game soundtrack will have the listening experience amplified by playing through the game, but the soundtrack stands on it's own merits, even when detached from the gameplay aspect. The wide range of genres makes the album a joy to go through, and the main producer Masayoshi Soken doesn't get enough credit for having such an ear for all kinds of music. Granted, Soken loves his leitmotif, but it works for a video game soundtrack. No other album this year could compare to this masterpiece, and it would be foolish to try.

Recommendations (spoiler-heavy):

Garlemald Express

Endcaller

Top 20 Singles 2022: 20-17

20. tove styrke - bruises

'' HARD was a disappointment. Bruises is a highlight with it's inoffensive take on 2000s pop-rock. ''

19. chlöe - treat me

'' this chorus is a smash. rest of the song is pretty forgettable. ''

18. elohim - i am the greatest

'' addictive and real energetic, shame about the bridge kinda destroying the tempo and flow of the song. ''

17. betty who - blow out my candle

'' all around good upbeat pop, albeit a little corny. ''

Bruises is nice, easily the best song on that underwhelming album! And Treat Me is my favorite song by Chlöe so far

Your intro - how depressing :jonny5:But I feel you.

Treat Me is my fave from the set. I need to check what my girl Betty has been up to.

Yeah 2022 was not the best year for music, it's true  Some great highlights... although that happens every year.

I don't remember Bruises but HARD did not hit hard, that's for sure. Treat Me ahhh so good & her best song so far.

Blow Out My Candle :worship::worship: Betty snapped on that one, best on the album and the best way to start the era as well.

This reveal concept is nice, ready to see what's coming up :eddie:

Yeah, haven't really found anything else by Chlöe that bops as hard.
Yeah, HARD was an underwhelming album, especially compared to how interesting and cool Kiddo was, and how immaculate the pop melodies and the production was in Sway.

I haven't listened to BIG yet either, mostly because Blow Out My Candle resides in the plane of songs I'd gladly listen to for just general good vibes, but they're not exactly songs that inspire me to listen to the artist or the album behind it. But I think I'll have to check it out either way because albums were dreadful this year!

Blow Out My Candle is definitely a good place to start. It's completely inoffensive and easy to digest, a completely serviceable pop bop. Unsure about the album though, haven't checked it out yet.

And yeah, this year was completely depressing. :gaycat6:

Every year will have highlights of course, but if I am completely unable to find more than ONE album to highlight, it has not been a good year! Maybe I'm just becoming a singles and EP type of person though, because good cohesive albums are so rare these days.

If Blow Out My Candle is the best Betty has to offer on her new album, that's not really a good sign, but alas I have to check out the release myself. Perhaps I'll come to a different conclusion.

Thank you for the compliment as well!

16. ILIRA - Clean Break

'' an effortless bop, read into that how you will. ''

15. Rony Rex, Alisky & Madge - Alligator

'' cute quirky house banger, i've been going back to this constantly the entire year. ''

14. CSR (첫사랑) - Pop? Pop! (첫사랑)

'' so refreshing. they better get a hit asap though because the transition to girlcrush is inevitable otherwise. ''

13. Noga Erez - NAILS

'' Noga Erez keeps delivering  intriguing, unique and weird hiphop-adjacent pop music, NAILS being no different. ''

ATRL is crumbling at a rapid pace so I'm just ripping the bandage in case everything suddenly goes offline.

12. Lolo Zouaï - Give Me A Kiss

'' love that satanic sexy seductive chorus. ''

11. NAYEON - POP!

'' i see a pattern this year for good kpop songs... this is truly kpop at it's best. ''

10. Milk & Bone - Sour

'' hauntingly beautiful. that beat drop gets me every time. ''

9. Zoe Wees - Third Wheel

'' the best 2000s poprock inspired song of the year. ''

8. Disclosure & RAYE - Waterfall

'' how did this not become huge is beyond me. so nostalgic. ''

7. Nasca & Kisaki - Bad Apple!! feat. nomico (Nasca Remix)

'' Bad Apple!!, you will always be famous. the hard dance beat is just *chefs kiss* mwah. ''

6. Selah Sue - All The Way Down

'' her vocals peel my skin and touch my soul in the best way. this is what gaga wishes she sounded like when she screams, and i say this as a gaga fan. ''

5. NERVO & Midnight City - Flames

'' how did nervo manage to finally release a good song after all these years... this is catchy af. ''

4. Purity Ring - graves

'' purity ring always comes out of nowhere once in a while to deliver at least one immaculate electronic bop. ''

3. Aiida - Puzzles

'' compared to most songs on the list, this one is very basic, but the lyrics and the melodies are pop perfection. ''

2. Dillon - <3core

'' dillon's 6abotage is her most commercial and pop work to date, but her uniqueness still shines through in songs like <3core. i am surprised by how great is is, really. ''

1. Kyla La Grange - Generations

'' a masterpiece. the album wasn't great, but this makes up for it for being pure art and a masterclass in lyricism, so she is forgiven for giving us such a inconsistent mess of an album. ''

I kinda liked the Kyla album tbh, at least more than other people did. I think Fury was my fave? Some other cute songs too, I really liked Graves even if they’ve fallen off over time

Treat me isn't like massivley amazing or anything, but it's catchy enough and I really like the chorus. I just hope Chlöe can improve on Treat Me and take the song as general direction for her future songs, but I somehow doubt that's going to happen.

CSR is going to be snubbed from so many lists. Cute concepts never get the appreciation and acclaim they deserve :gaycat6:

So which album was this :fan:

The thing is I'm a huge Kyla fan and have been waiting for new content for years, so my expectations were super high. There were definitely great songs on there but overall I was disappointed in the album, with roughly 4 songs I'd listen to overall. Though with that said, Generations and Set You Free are some of her best songs ever so I'm not leaving this album behind with nothing gained, definitely not. It's just that Ashes is such a massive moment for me and it's one of my all time favorite albums, and she has yet to release another project that is as cohesive and great as that one. So even if overall While Your Heart’s Still Beating isn't terrible, for my standards it's a disappointment.

Well I can tell you that's it's a soundtrack. :fan:
