Sanguine Posted December 12, 2022 Author Posted December 12, 2022 (edited) Favorite Songs of 2022 One per artist 25-1 25. NMIXX - O.O Y'all weren't ready for this avant-garde K-masterpiece and that's okay, hopefully it gets the acclaim it deserves in further years. Too bad their following songs were just lame attempts to re-create it :/ 24. Bladee - Girls Just Want to Have Fun It's from 2020 but made his 2022 album and I was too anti-Bladee to ever include him in past years, but this year idk, stockholm syndrome, some other syndrome? kicked in and I love him now. This sounds like a Visions-era Grimes song, AND WHILE ART ANGELS IS BETTER, that's still a great thing to channel 23. Rachel Chinouriri - All I Ever Asked A Bedroom Pop magnum opus, very early Clairo-core but more in the vein of her excellent songs (Bags, Softly). The little synths in here + her vocal delivery really make it, it's songs like this that wouldn't have existed ten years ago but don't get the credit they deserve for it because they're so simple. More appreciation for effortless beauty please 22. Nilüfer Yanya - anotherlife See Also: Company, Stabilise (why is it spelled like that I hate British people), L/R Probably not the obvious hit from the album and was nowhere near my favorite at first, but something really drew me in to "anotherlife" as I got more enveloped into the project. I'm not sure exactly how to describe the way this song makes me feel, but the Spotify canvas is her running around in some backyard and then cheerfully collapsing onto her bed afterwards and yeah that defines the vibe well enough. The guitar texture is chefs kiss and I love the lyrics too, it has the kind of optimism in somberness that a lot of sad girl music lacks, and is direct in a way that doesn't feel corny 21. Rico Nasty - Skullflower See Also: Intrusive, Black Punk Probably her second best song behind iPhone, I love it when she plays around with vocal effects and gives us what a lot of these watered down Hyperpop rappers think they're doing. That bass... whewwww lord. All I have to say is BANGER!!!!!!!! 20. Rina Sawayama - Catch Me in The Air See Also: Your Age, Imagining, Phantom As a Rina stan I stockholm'd myself into loving HTG but always loved and coveted this track in particular, when are we as a society going to accept that 2008 Hannah Montana rejects are quality music? It's corny but the lyrics about growing up with a single mother and kinds of stuff that comes from that really resonated with me as well. Btw Phantom is extremely overhated and grew on me a ton 19. Sudan Archives - Freakalizer See Also: NBPQ (Topless), OMG BRITT Wtf happened with her this year lmao?! She's like an entirely different artist now?? But that's a GREAT thing because this was by far her most engaging work despite the length. Although the tumultuous vibe of Topless is everything, I've gotta pick Freakalizer just for being the perfect R&B song, feeling familiar yet fresh 18. Yena - Smiley Best K-Pop song to come out of the Pop Rock trend. This just makes me HAPPY! No further notes 17. Ethel Cain - Family Tree See Also: American Teenager, Televangelism, Ptolemaea Initially this was my least favorite from her thought it sounded like a countrified Lana. But then it randomly hit? I struggled to choose for her because I adore every song on the album besides A House in Nebraska which is soo overrated lol. She's an incredibly promising artist with a lot of range, I do hope for a few more Taylor'd bops with the next record hehe 16. Addison Rae - I Got It Bad See Also: Nothing On, Mind on Me, Resist Me I've been rooting for her since Obsessed came out and loved most of the leaks, at this point I might even like Nothing On more but this song is just tewwww iconic, I had to choose it. When it leaked on Grammys night... that's foreshadowing baby. Also she sounds like Ariana on the bridge but like, the talented version 15. Soccer Mommy - Bones See Also: Don't Ask Me, Still First of all I wanna say when this came out I swore the outro sounded like something and couldn't figure it out, so I went through like every Shoegaze album I've ever heard, but realized it wasn't even a Shoegaze song she was inspired from, it's ACTUALLY a Shoegaze version of the outro from her own song Skin, queen of connecting Skin and Bones. And ngl I feel like a genius for that because I haven't seen anyone else notice it? Maybe her debut was just too irrelevant. Anyways! AMAZING track, like with Indie Folk I was bigger into Indie Rock last year but when Soccer Mommy announced a new album I was hyped, and she didn't let me down but this is the clear highlight! Not much else to say other than it comes together perfectly in every regard, even if it's not reinventing the wheel 14. Rosalía - Saoko See Also: Chicken Teriyaki, CUUUUuuuuuute Rosalía truly converted me this era to be fair, I hadn't listened to her debut (I have now and it's good), but I did dislike the Queer album a lot when I heard it and found her voice unlistenable, and ngl even this album had to grow. Now that I've adjusted I more than enjoy her music, and Saoko is just I want a full album like this, WORK WITH ARCA AGAIN!!!! 13. Taylor Swift - Karma See Also: Midnight Rain, Maroon, Labyrinth Midnights most overhated album of 2022, amazing showstopping fearless genreblending boundary pushing okay not really but yeah etc. idgaf. It's literally the most natural post-Rep/Lover evolution she could've had, but y'all were too busy creaming over Evermore which is her worst album (Folklore is still good) to get it. Karma is that banger, also whenever I listen I think of when one of my friends had such a blown away reaction upon hearing it for the first time and it makes me happy skjhgf 12. Chase Icon - Nancy See Also: Any song she released this year I've been following Chase since she dropped the best debut single of all time "SRS," and although I found some of her early stuff a little underbaked, she came into 2022 fully formed as our next **** princess #ThankYouAyesha #ThankYouSlayyyter. I keep saying it but I struggled to pick for the song choice, everything she does is just so amazing however the chorus of this one makes me go crazy, it's straight out of the Big Juicy playbook but honestly better? Definitely what **** Pop could've been, and to think she did it on 1/50th of the budget by herself... that's embarrassing for you mama 11. Black Dresses - u_u2 The Gaymers™ will drag me for their inclusion but I love them idc idc. It's a huge talent to make the most chaotic music possible while retaining the catchiness of pop songwriting, deserves more credit 10. Hatchie - Thinking Of See Also: Nosedive, The Key, Take My Hand YES I CHOSE THE SONG ON THE ALBUM NOBODY LIKES BECAUSE YOU GUYS SUCK. This is beautiful and only panned because it's so short, literally makes me wanna cry, did I mention you guys suck 9. Alvvays - Pharmacist See Also: Belinda Says, After the Earthquake, Many Mirrors Ever since leveling up from their single-loaded debut with Antisocialites, Alvvays have been making hit after hit for me personally, and Blue Rev was my most anticipated album of the year the second it was announced. These guys know how to write a hook and add some distorted guitar ****, so it's an instant ten from me 8. Big Thief - Simulation Swarm See Also: Little Things, Blue Lightning Last minute addition for me but I listened 150 times in a day () and it's held on so far, I felt it NEEDED to be here. Listened to their album in Feb, liked it and all that, but never went back to it for a second time. Decided to finally revisit a couple weeks ago and lord this song is incredible. To ME, Simulation Swarm is to Big Thief what people think Space Song is to Beach House, where it feels like the perfect culmination of their sound into one track and people act like it's their best song by far. Unlike Big Thief I love BH so I don't agree with that being their best song at all but for someone who doesn't listen to them that much, yeah this is easily their best 7. Beach Bunny - Entropy See Also: Fire Escape The best Pop Rock song of all time is not by The Beatles, not by Bowie or The Smiths or Fleetwood Mac, it's Hot by Avril Lavigne. And any artist using that as their inspiration deserves more than just a top ten on some irrelevant list but that's what they're getting! 6. Yeule - Fragments See Also: I <3 U, Electric, Mandy Pretending this didn't leak last year DBSHOYOB was my SOTY for 2021, and although that was the standout track, Glitch Princess is filled with so many other incredible tracks. Such a personal album equally filled with warm beauty and icy dissonance. This is my other personal favorite, it feels like a loving hug that shatters you into pieces, or well, fragments. Kind of like that Witness era vid where she says someone asking you if you're okay makes you cry or w/e 5. Carly Rae Jepsen - Western Wind See Also: Beach House, Bends, Anxious, Surrender My Heart, Shooting Star CARLY RAE IS BACK!! She was my original fave, and I love her soo much like her music means everything to me Both Dedicated albums were GOOD, don't get me wrong, but a pretty steep decline from Emotion with quite a few forgettable tracks that... really gave off the vibe of the cover. The Loneliest Time is so much better?! I don't really get all the people acting like it's her worst. I mean yes, it's incohesive as hell, but every individual song is great, and got me back on the Raepist team. I'll admit Western Wind was not an instant clicker, but when it hit, it HIT. Rostam snapped. Also Beach House is SOTD 4. Shygirl - Woe See Also: Heaven, Come for Me, Nike, Shlut I was so wrong about SHYGIRL!! Not that I ever disliked her, but I was like "okay, she's cool, I like her but I'm not gonna put her music on repeat or anything" and this year, I fully became a Shygirl stan and spammed all of her music. I understand people who only cared about Alias being disappointed that it wasn't all club bangers, but I loved Nymph. It gives off mixtape energy in the BEST way, because she tried on loads of different hats and succeeded at all of them (this is Tinashe and Rihanna, Wildfire is Rochelle Jordan, Coochie is Ariana Grande/Bladee, Firefly is Erika de Casier/PinkPantheress, Heaven is Owl City, I could go on). Anyways back to the song, the chorus vocal production completely makes it for me, and the switch-up is the cherry on top. She was my most played artist of the year and I'm so excited for her next album 3. beabadoobee - Talk See Also: Pictures of Us, See You Soon, 10:36, Fairy Song She's just amazing, you can tell she puts so much heart into her music and I really connect with it. Talk strikes a perfect balance between noisy distortion and linear lucidity, so in other words, it's genius and everything I stand for musically. Although I was hoping for more bangers initially, Beatopia quickly grew into a personal favorite with so many dreamy indie girl gems Btw I'm bitter af that Taylor added a third date to the Eras Tour for Atlanta that I'm attending but Gayle and Muna are the openers instead of her. TOMATOOOO 2. NewJeans - Hype Boy See Also: the EP My favorite K-Pop song ever when they first debuted I thought their music kinda sounded like cheap Loona ripoffs and, as someone who is never wrong, I've honestly never been more wrong in my life because New Jeans > Max and Match This is a PERFECT pop song, the production that starts at the beginning gets me well, HYPE, and that chorus is heaven. Sometimes there's absolutely nothing better than a mega K-Pop bop, and it's true here well evidently there's one thing better. K-Pop this year has been fantastic after what was mostly a lackluster 2021. I am SO SO SO SO excited for their new single next week and hope they don't let me down like Aespa did!!!! By the way, my K-Pop TRINITY is this/Loonatic/Savage, but I have to shout out f(x)'s entire discography as well 1. Caroline Loveglow - Patience Etc... See Also: Foxy, Zenosyne, Happy Happy First of all I wanna say this was released in 2021 LOL but I'm naming it my SOTY for a couple reasons in spite of that, one I discovered her in January and the album was released a month later, two it's not like anybody knew who she was until 2022 anyway, like come on, and three, I would be lying if I said there was a song that had a bigger impact and meant more to me than "Patience Etc..." this year. It's my most played song of the year as well as the one that had the most longevity, since I've streamed it nearly every day since January, so glad I found out about her so early and was like the first rating for her album on RYM It's fitting that I discovered her from the Hatchie tour announcement given she's another one of my faves, and because if there's one genre that's kept me sane and grounded in 2022, it's Dream Pop. As someone who has problems with anxiety, feeling on edge all the time, and just a general lack of esteem and confidence, I've honestly cried to this just because it makes me feel better after a bad day since it's so pretty. It can be really relaxing to have someone sing your problems away for you over a dreamy instrumental. Speaking of the instrumental, it sounds like what I imagine wandering around underwater in the deepest sea feels like, it's so beautiful her vocals are perfect for this electronic Indie Dream Pop style, and the song manages to have an amazing hook while remaining ethereal, the lyrics are so cute and simple yet evocative, they always make me think of my bf, I could write an essay but to keep it simple I'm in love with this song <3 And that's the mecore for 2022 I'll drop an albums and EPs list tomorrow or Wednesday after I'm done with my semester but probably just a dump, it will look a little different from songs because there will be lots of albums I loved but haven't spent as much time with, or where I find them cohesive but didn't think they had an 11/10 standout track Edited December 13, 2022 by Sanguine

It feels a lot like the centrepiece of everything. ADORE the Skullcrusher song pick (and album). Indie Folk is a genre I'm usually pretty into but definitely need to be in the right mindset for. I've found that lately, especially with winter, that album's haunting sound has hit in ways it didn't before. Excellent Ravyn pick as well, one of my favourites. I still prefer the first half but as a whole the album sets up this incredible mood and slinks between different styles so effortlessly you barely notice. hover like a GODDESS!!!! Willow absolute queen... I love how focused this album was compared to last year. Those random atmospheric parts in this song >>> 4am, 10 Things, Sexo Amor, Blonde, Bloody Future, Flower Rain, Blue Light, Mission... etc etc like.. obviously I love almost all fo this update :cannot: I could go on and on <3 thanx bestie. Agree that you need the right mindset for Indie Folk, or else it can suck! Hover Like a Goddess kinda the best song ever I should've sent it for ArSC... 13 hours ago, theblackestday said: All these hits ma'am Essay incoming: Immature definite FLO pick for me wow they embodied that 2000s R&B but fresh sound there I've not heard from Grouper since Whatever Fits Together came out... coincidence? Xtasy was always great but the remix elevated it for me so much wow. The added adlibs are Willow truly came through. Hover Like a Goddess is a perfect pick. Fully agree with your writeup, flame twin Washed Away sotd + Raven aotd Fellow Dariacore stan omg 2 and 3 are the best it's true Ms. Jackling truly channeled Mitski in I Was Neon better than Laurel Hell could Sexo Amor Dinero is so goooooooooood wow Isabella mothered. Top 1 indeed Snow Strippers are a good CC ripoff band but it became so jarring to me after awhile I couldn't do it anymore Jockstrap's album definitely peaked with the opener spill You DO need to revisit Alex albums, GSTA is greattt but not in my top 3 from him Fossora yasss Blue Light yasss. All songs called Blue Light are excellent by default (Mitski, Kelela, Jorja in plural, etc.) Wait true... Julia new sad girl icon huh, Mitski over sadly. Nnnn @ Snow Strippers, I played them so much this year actually they can't beat III or II tho I'll have to revisit Alex soooon and see if I find a new fave 11 hours ago, Mr. Blue_Shirt said: Immature, Shirt, Xtasy, Bloody Future & Fossora acclaim like woah Truly one of the best songs this year The way Mabel wasted Shy like it's not one of the best song on the album and yet she chose the safest choice for the album. If she wants be a pop diva then choose the f*******t songs as the singles then Right... she should've released Animal or I Love You Girl as singles 10 hours ago, Hikari said: Yes I prefer Immature too over Cardboard Box tho both songs are 10/10 Comparing SZA to Bella Roach Poarch now? That's not very nice of you! Mabel was the biggest surprise here coz never have I imagined that I would actually enjoy a song by her :cri: I still haven't listened to any of the Caroline sings (and I refuse to! maybe I'll change my mind next year!} At least you put Kelegend above her Xtasy is cute but I do love Venom and Wish more, I should listen to that willow more since it was definitely a step up from her previous album. Isabella gave lsrfm their biggest hit so we should all thanks her for that, her own work is just as good as well. Hmmm Flower Rain, I think I like Numb and Last Dance more but yes Youha promo! Great picks for Kilo, Snowstrippers and Jockstrap! Bjork also giving us a good album this year! Polgg48 Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 23. Rachel Chinouriri - All I Ever Asked - i jump!, her EP is superior as your describe. born ready for her album 21. Rico Nasty - Skullflower - you spilled 7. Beach Bunny - Entropy - not expected to see her around since album came and went like soccer mommy, nice for her recognition 1. Caroline Loveglow - Patience Etc... - masterpiece yep whew taste
luckystrike Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 soooo many hits on this list All I Ever Asked just hit me recently and it’s stunning Skullflower is SO fun and definitely a Rico standout Catch Me In the Air not my go to choice from HTG but it’s very cute SMILEY mega bop I Got It Bad best song ever not released Rosalia, Taylor, Hatchie, Shygirl and Carly all absolute mothers, 5 incredible albums Hype Boy KSOTY NewJeans queens of kpop and extremely happy for Caroline Loveglow to get your SOTY, she released a stunning project and she is the queen of music after all
BlackoutZone Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Oh so you cheated and basically Hype Boy SOTY YUP! No but in reality you are so right, cause Caroline really came as +1 for Hatchie enjoyers this year, I def liked Strawberry but it didn't snatch me as much so I will revisit. So true about Western Wind, like you just had to listen to it a bit and when it clicked.. lord! Lots of other good picks not karma and not catch me in the air. Slayed! also 39 minutes ago, Sanguine said: Y'all weren't ready for this avant-garde K-masterpiece and that's okay apparently we still aren't, cause it's been months and it still sounds bad ALSO 40 minutes ago, Sanguine said: New Jeans > Max and Match please kys (mods dont ban me please its a joke or is it)
smholiv Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 The Patience Etc... write up TRULY one of the most incredible and immersive dream pop songs of the entire year. The way she did that album on her own is honestly fantastic to me, it's so inspirational. The entire top 7 is FLAWLESS, I love all of those songs and completely agree with your reasonings for them. So glad SHYGIRL exists and released one of the most addictive albums, Beabadoobee just improved on her already interesting music, we got new artists like NewJeans, we had ICONS like Yeule... Great pick with Karma, it's very clearly one of the most addictive pop songs of the year. Her talent for songwriting and creating immaculate hooks is NOT lost on me. Saoko, Bones, Freakalizer... oh wow oh wow, and RACHEL!!! Bedroom pop is such a fascinating genre to me because it's truly one of the most open-ended genres out there and there isn't really a "go-to" way to do it, but every now and then you have a song where it just feels like it hits all the right notes.
MP2K Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 a lot of good stuff to mention. This Rachel girl looks to be interesting! Also Stimulation Sworn was somehow played a lot for me but didn't make my cut because I just forgot
Into The Void Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Western Wind + Karma Catch Me In The Air is okay for some reason the more I listen to HTG the worse it gets? I cant for the life of me get into Motomami
Remmy Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Immature yesss Yeah FLO really snapped with their debut project. Sunset and BLOODY FUTURE are also nice It's so funny how some of you just make up artist names, like who the hell is Lee Myrrh? Might need to get into Hazel English since Element was hyping ha up & now she's high on your list Catch Me In the Air is super cute. Same with All I Ever Asked I Got It Bad first & only Addison song I've enjoyed so far, and of course it doesn't get officially released nnn. Which is still wild to me since it was actually gaining traction on Twitter/TikTok. Karma at #13 Hatchie starting off the top 10 yesss, and I don't hate Thinking Of one bit! She's super pretty, just a little too short. For #5-2, well....... you know my thoughts on these but Western Wind is still alright. Oop this reminds me that I forgot to get into Caroline Loveglow, perhaps I'll fix that at the top of 2023. Also want to say thanks to her for blocking some of these tracks kiiii "Btw I'm bitter af that Taylor added a third date to the Eras Tour for Atlanta that I'm attending but Gayle and Muna are the openers instead of her. TOMATOOOO" It's what you deserve, get the worst and best (not counting Paramore) from the opening act lineup all in one night!!!!
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Saoko, Smiley & Western Wind supermacy yup yup Catch Me in The Air is serving The Corrs circa early 2000s and i'm obsessed with it. Definitely has that nostlagia feeling to it Talk is so good but honestly the album isn't hit the same way as this song does for me. Hype Boy is also super good but there's something about Attention that feels very fresh, kinda like breathing the cleanest air at 5 in the morning
dreamofyou Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 rina, taylor, ethel & addison as much as i liked beabadoobee's album, i don't get the talk hype
Kinich Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Of course the shoog shoog chanteuses would be here, well at least that song is a lot more interesting than dice! Yes we love simplicity, Rachel's All I Ever Asked is simply a breath of fresh air! Freakalizer is a major major banger! Smiey one of the first few kpop songs that I enjoyed earleir this year! Well switching on Family Tree was a good thing! Retired queen of music, addison slay is no shocker here! Soccer Mommy delivering an even better album this year, we love you soccer mommy! Saoko and Chicken Teriyaki were both instants for me! Karma is just the hit that is waiting to happen! Hatchie queen of dream pop has no bad songs! Ooop I was almost sure Belinda Says was gonna be your Alvvays pick! Love love love Entropy! Any yeule pick is a good pick, tho Electric and Mandy from that list >> The Western Wind switching stanning was really a shocker, listened to the album the other day and i didnt dislike it anymore. Beach House is still my fave single tho. Shygurl just kept on delivering this year and never disappointed us! You know how much I love Talk and bea (I even promo'd her in that ATRL game even if it meant flopping!) No one really saw Newjeans sweeping all of us like that I guess @diogozszdid! Caroline can be the princess of dreampop i guess, Zenosyne is my fave from her tho x
TheWayWeWere Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I didn't really like Western Wind at first, but it grows on me so much since album release Karma is a bit too much of a early Billie's carreer one of my least favorites
ATRL Moderator Legend E Posted December 16, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted December 16, 2022 indeed Thinking Of is a choice! Talk is cute. Western Wind meh. Karma bop. Family Tree great, but Hard Times deserved its flowers

I love Max and Match but it's not one of my all-time K-Pop faves Loonatic/Uncover/Chaotic are THOSE songs however On 12/12/2022 at 8:12 PM, minho said: The Patience Etc... write up TRULY one of the most incredible and immersive dream pop songs of the entire year. Exactly... and yes exclude Big Thief from your narrative. And I agree, when you think about it it's kind of barely a genre sjhfgh it's just like Indie Pop but... cheaper On 12/12/2022 at 9:05 PM, Allday said: Rina & Taylor Queens On 12/12/2022 at 9:25 PM, MP2K said: a lot of good stuff to mention. This Rachel girl looks to be interesting! Also Stimulation Sworn was somehow played a lot for me but didn't make my cut because I just forgot Skshgd poor Big Thief with their early year release. And yes check out Rachel! On 12/12/2022 at 9:42 PM, Insanity said: Western Wind + Karma Catch Me In The Air is okay for some reason the more I listen to HTG the worse it gets? I cant for the life of me get into Motomami Yeah I get that, HTG is good but didn't have amazing replay value for me Motomami is fun, a grower for me On 12/13/2022 at 12:27 AM, Remmy said: Immature yesss Yeah FLO really snapped with their debut project. Best Gayle worst Muna yes... Stan Addison love the Thinking Of acclaim and yes you need to get into Caroline, was surprised you didn't like her songs in the rate! Definitely has that nostlagia feeling to it Talk is so good but honestly the album isn't hit the same way as this song does for me. Hype Boy is also super good but there's something about Attention that feels very fresh, kinda like breathing the cleanest air at 5 in the morning Glad someone else loves CMITA! Beatopia is a hugeeee grower, highly suggest giving it another chance. Love Attention as well but Hype Boy's production whew On 12/13/2022 at 2:23 AM, Grumpy Cat said: Taylor coming thru! Yup! On 12/13/2022 at 8:50 AM, Hikari said: Of course the shoog shoog chanteuses would be here, well at least that song is a lot more interesting than dice! Caroline can be the princess of dreampop i guess, Zenosyne is my fave from her tho x Ily for your elaborative comments <3 and you are so right although I thought you liked Patience Etc more too? Not the switch... I thought Vigilante **** was the Billie'd one nn On 12/15/2022 at 10:08 PM, Legend E said: indeed Thinking Of is a choice! Talk is cute. Western Wind meh. Karma bop. Family Tree great, but Hard Times deserved its flowers Hard Times was actually my fave album track when it came out but it grew off me a teensy bit. Still excellent though!
smholiv Posted December 17, 2022 Posted December 17, 2022 So many of these are on my own lists AHHH so I'll spare the essay on this disaster site and just say: Yeule is an INCREDIBLE and very deserving choice for winner of AOTY. Truly a masterpiece and one of the most intricate albums of the year. Knowing the entire top 3 are basically all AOTY contenders makes it all the more sweeter since each of them feel like masterpieces. The EP list is also flawless, love the winner yet again. NewJeans ICONS! Great lists overall off so glad the emoji is back
